Mind boggling that he played Whiteman as wing back and Flynn in the centre.
 



If Adkins wasn't so committed to Hammond and picked players on merit then Whiteman would've been in the team from January onwards and we would've probably had him tied down to a long contract already. He might have even started this season in the team.
 
Whiteman the best player since...Paul Holland. High praise indeed.

Seriously though he looks a great prospect. Hope he gets a chance to break into our first team in the next year or two

Whatever went wrong with Paul Holland? Seemed to join with a lot of expectation around him, but as I recall was moved on very quickly. Was he even still there when Kendall came in?
 
I was a fan of Brayford and think he's a decent enough Championship full back, even if he is a bit suspect defensively. Ricky will know as much as anyone how much I've defended him in the past.

But I've got to be honest, I think he played for away in those early games this season. He wasn't injured or off-form as we could see by the way that he seemingly hit the ground running in a division higher, he just didn't seem interested or committed to me. The last game he played for us he was so bad it was like he'd never played a professional game before and he couldn't jump, run or tackle.

I'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to players who are genuinely struggling or off their game, and I like nothing more than for them to turn it around, but taking the piss at the expense of my club is another matter, and my gut feeling was that he was. I came out of the ground twice saying he hadn't tried an inch, so for as I'm concerned he can do one, he's history.

Paul Holland joined United at the beginning of the diamonds season of 1995/6. In his autobiography, Talking Double Dutch, he is scathing about many of the squad at Bramall Lane who he considered to be pampered pussies, basically. They had a psychologist who they used to provide them with excuses not to train properly, they were overpaid, lazy and mollycoddled and he had little time for them.

He didn't fit in, and was transferred to Chesterfield where John Duncan made everyone train till they were sick. He loved it there.

It's a good book. It's about football rather than a lot of boasting about how much he drank/many women he shagged which far too many footballers' autobiographies turn out to consist of. The two things that stand out are his dodgy knees, which finished his career early and which Bristol City were kept in the dark about when they paid a big fee for him, and Dutch's intense dislike of Keith Curle, who comes over as a very strange person indeed.

He is a good player but was poor at start of season before he went out to Burton
 
Like the praise for Whiteman, interestingly Mansfield play a similar game to us from those clips (I was going to say 'how tidy they looked') which would bode well for Whiteman returning to us to play when there is no pressure on (don't know if this is possible dependant on his loan terms).
 
Brayford's playing well in the Championship. Wilder will have noted this, whether he decides to bring him back is beyond me. One thing is crystal clear though, we have a player back in form, so his value must reflect this.
 



Having said all that I assume Whiteman will be helping Mansfield in the play offs at the end of the season...

One of my mates is a Mansfield fan and he thinks he's brill
 
It doesn't matter how good Brayford is,although i'm not one who was part of the euphoria that surrounded his time here.The reason he will not be back while Wilder is in charge is purely financial,i bet he trembled when he became aware of what Brayford was earning and he will try and move him on any which way he can.

I remember when we signed him. He was regarded as a hot prospect - I think he'd played for England under 21s already. Unfortunately, whilst his assessment of the squad at the time may be accurate, he was a big disappointment. He was one of a long line of United midfielders that starts with Jamie Hoyland, covers the likes of Paul Thirwell, Bobby Ford and Brian Howard, and ends (currently) with Louis Reed and Dean Hammond, that inhabit some sort of black hole and don't actually seem to do anything. He was not good enough for the second tier.

I do remember his only league goal for us, a neat finish at Southend after playing a 1-2. That was the only highlight of a miserable day, when we lost 2-1, Blake got sent off and pro- and anti-Bassett factions of our support came to blows.

Yeah no issue with that comment, he was out of form, but so were many others, he could've easily played the wing back system which Wilder has favoured since and had we gone down this route with him, i think we'd have had some good performances out of him, just like we saw in the cup run seasons.

I'm not sure we'd have seen the attacking performances from Brayford at wing back that we've had out of Freeman
 
Agree with GrayBlade. In terms of recalling one or the other, Whiteman has to stay on our books but I couldn't see him slotting into a Championship team when we've got Carruthers and O'Shea who have played at a higher level than him; perhaps another loan deal with an emergency recall if Mansfield or a League One club come asking. 300k is ridiculous and it would be pathetic to sell him when he's the only academy-fringe first team player who's got such raving reviews.

Brayford on the other hand looked lethargic and disinterested in the latter stages of his time here and I'm not sure how much to attribute that to his injury; he always looked like he lost pace yet didquickly find thr energy at Burton under Clough, coincidence huh? And like with any team; why fix something that's not broken? I can't see CW slotting him back into a winning squad with such chemistry and it would be so unfair on Freeman given he was transfer listed at the start of the season to now. He's happy at Burton - so let him be happy there! We don't need potentially 'bigger-than-the-club' players disrupting the team ethos when we're going to be focused on staying up if we get promoted. But then again I didn't expect us to recall McNulty. Yes he is 'championship quality' but attitude wise I'm hugely skeptical. No recall for JB please.

Exactly that GrayBlade.

His last performance at Bramall Lane (the Southend game) he 'played away' for a transfer. There was one instance where we lost the ball, they countered down his side & he didn't even 'jog' back, he ambled back as in 'I can't be arsed'.

If you 'can't be arsed' for Sheffield United that's unforgiving Bearded One & although you've presented us some fantastic memories in the past, seem a nice bloke & spoke highly of the club, if you didn't want to be here when the 'going got tough' then as far as I'm concerned we don't want you here when the sun starts shining again.

As far as I'm aware we can't recall either.
 
Whether Brayford should return is partly down to the concerns over his fitness (seems like every time I hear him mentioned he's picked up another injury) and partly down to the player himself. If he genuinely wants back in at United then he's a Championship player. If he wants away then it's just a case of how much money we can recoup.

I agree with you. My only concern with Brayford is that he seems to be picking up a lot of injuries ever since he did his ACL for us. I think he’s had around 4 layoffs now since coming back from that injury.
