Line Up vs Birmingum

I just don't get all the people on here thinking LCB is our biggest position of need. Robinson is more than good enough and was one of our better players at the end of last season. OK he's no world beater but who is in that position in the Championship?

We desperately need a box to box midfielder and a player who can can take the opposition on and open up the pitch.

Give me either of them before a LCB.

As it stands and, taking into account injuries, team v Brum: 3,4,1,2
Rammers, Bash, Egan, Robinson, Baldock, Berge, Norwood, Fleck, Didzy, Moose, Burke

I'd have McB in instead of Burke if fit

That team but Jebbo instead of Burke , cant believe were letting him go to Sunderland .

Although the pace up front with moose and burke will cause havoc !!

Every season since our league one promotion, Bash has been written off as not good enough, or won't fit in the system, yet he's been Mr consistent, Mr reliable, Mr feckin awesome the entire time. He simply cannot be left out.

For the first match I'd like to see:

Ramsdale

Bash
Egan
Robinson

Baldock
Berge
Norwood
Fleck

Mcgoldrick

Mousset
Brewster

Jags, Ampadu and Bryan are gone, JOC still not fit so we need to bring in at least one defender and although Robinson is probably fine for a back three, whenever Jokanovic has used a back 4 in the past it's still had full backs bombing forward, so it's best to have more of a specialist there if we need to bring someone in anyway.

We do desperately need to strengthen the other two positions as well.

Fleck at left wing back is one of the oddest suggestions that's popping up in these line-up ideas.

Based on what we've seen so far it is more likely that we play with one central striker - most likely Mousset - and two players supporting him, similar to what Heckingbottom ended up with last season. I think McGoldrik and Brewster OR Burke will be just behind/flanking Lys.

Is that 3 at the back with no left wing back or four at the back with Robinson at left back ?

yes i think so as well and in all honesty whichever side or formation we use we really should beat birmingham

4Play with a diamond in midfield, di
Ramsdale
Baldock Egan Robinson/ New CH RND
Berge Norwood Fleck
McGoldrick
Moose Burke

Subs: Verrips, Bogle, Basham, Slater, Osborn, Freeman, Brewster;

Wouldn’t mind a similar formation to 1st half vs Donny, but I’d like to see what we’d be like if we dropped Norwood for Basham as a defensive mid and let Berge and Fleck have a more free role.

Wow
73 posts in and no mention of Billy Sharp.
He may not be a regular starter but I’d be amazed if he doesn’t play a significant part this season. Even at 35 he will still be more than capable of doing the business in this division.

from the bench but agree will be a very important part of our squad

Basham in a centre back pair is hideous unless it’s part of a team that just sits back camped in its box (which he won’t be). Every time I’ve seen him in a centre back pair that pushes up he is absolutely allover the place.

OK and when was the last time you saw Bash play a professional game in a central defensive pairing? Under Adkins?

We have no relevant data whatsoever to be able to write off Bash to this extent. He has had years playing consistently as a defender, with two seasons at PL level. Won Player of the Season along the way. If asked by Slav to play as one of two centre halves I dare say he'll perform infinitely better than when Adkins or Clough asked him to do the same over six years ago.

I don't think anyone's writing Basham off. He (along with Billy) is Mister Sheffield United for me, and his performances over the last 5 years at RCB have been immense, he's made that position.

The question mark is where does he fit if we go to a back 4 as it's a different way for us to play. Not saying he can't but it's a valid question/thought. Previous to this he'd been a defensive midfielder for us in a 442.

If we go 343 like you suggest then he'll be the usual huge asset to the team. Am really interested to see how we go tactically, my current impression is that we'll be a bit more fluid, but either in a 3 or a 4, LCB is a concern.

Looks like we may be playing a 4-3-3 with a lot more possession based football

Possession based football is fraught with dangers.

I remember Warnock playing this high tempo direct/ long ball style and McCabe mentioned he wanted to change to a nicer passing style.
He appointed Robson/ Kids under the remit to play “better football” and for the 1st few months we played patient possession based football.
We generally controlled matches under Robson but we hardly created any chances….the opposition didn‘t create chances either.
Our attacks were too slow and due to there being limited goalmouth action it was boring….and our fans didn‘t like the chance in style.

When Wilder first arrived….he said “I know the type of football Blades prefer to see, the ball needs to be moved quicker playing on the front foot football”

If we control possession playing loads of sideways passes…i would imagine some of our fans might boo.
We have a cultural fanbase that love to shout “stop pissin around…gerrit forad”.

Hmmm any style of play is fraught with danger if you play said style half arsed and with the wrong players you will always fail

Bielsa plays pressing and plays that non stop but other teams get battered same for pep with possession etc

We played counter attack last season and got battered every week

However I think we have the players who can play that and have the manager who has proven that they can implement that style at this level

And im not sure our fans do maybe a few people on the back of the kop do but in general i think most would rather play with the ball than without

Wouldn’t want to see it in a million years

Very much agree.

Dont think people realise that Basham is very average (at best) at Championship level.
His strengths are fantastic stamina, good intelligence and the versatility to be decent at right back, centre back and even midfield.

The overlapping centre back system played exactly to Bashams strengths and covered up his weaknesses, same with O’Connell too.
Hence why for the past 3 years Basham has looked brilliant for us…Under Wilder, Basham would pop up at centre back, then right back covering an out of position Baldock, then down the right wing helping Baldock, then even up front helping Sharp….his stamina meant he could play multiple positions all in the same match.
It was the tactics playing to his strengths….making Basham look like Beckenbauer.

If SJ doesn’t use a version of the overlapping centre and he asks Basham to stay in position then he’ll decline to his league 1 form again.

If we play a back 4 then I'd always want one left footed centre half and one right footed centre half. Nothing else gets the heart rate going than a centre half trying to play the ball out with his standing foot.

Right now that means it's Robinson and then one of Egan or Bash which isn't really a choice at all much as I love Bash.

KM muddled his priorities. There was only one - get back into the PL whilst we were getting parachute payments. With only one year full payments and one year on half, we didn’t have time to bring in a “figurehead” manager and radically overhaul our playing style. If KM had just focused on getting in a manager to get us back up, it would have been far better for the club and him personally.

True regards style.

I suppose my point is that many of our fans (the vocal ones) couldn’t care less how we play, style is irrelevant, it’s just the result that counts.

So if SJ starts playing a nice possession based passing style where we totally control/ dominate games then we get hit in the break and unluckily lose 0-1.

Instead of being patient and being positive about our future prospects with the foundations being laid
you can bet the usual suspects on here and the boo boys at the stadium will be calling for us to abandon the possession football and just “pump it int box”

Carlisle match is on Tuesday 10th, 3 days after the Birmingham match.
Yeah can see that now ,I initially thought so ut when I looked at upcoming fixtures on BBC it had us down for Tuesday nightb

Not looking like signings are particularly likely before the weekend….

Would disappointing if we are left with only one recognised centre back that can play in a 2 in the squad.

For me slav is going to have to go 3 at the back even if it’s not his ideal formation just because that about the only option we have.

There's good reason he isn't being mentioned for the lineup this weekend...

Take your point but the thread altered from a “this weekend” to a “this season” theme hence the inclusions of McBurnie, Stevens, RND etc….
