Here is the link to the kits we discuss also....

Really enjoyed this pod with the excellent John Devlin from www.truecoloursfootballkits.com.

Devlin is maybe the leading illustrator and researcher on football kits. He knows his stuff even about United!

We rate every kit out of 10 and discuss the era/players.

We actually put a bit of effort into this pod...which implies we just turn up and talk crap on the others we do. That is probably close to the truth actually.

Part 2 coming soon....

Thanks to Webding for all his work on this with putting it all together.

I forgot to say there is a scoring grid too - so you can make the kits out of 10 at the end (in the powerpoint above) or you can do on here...copy and paste and let's see if anyone agrees/disagrees?

I will post the others after we do pod 2 and 3 -lots more kits to come!

Yeah, looking back, I was way too kind on that black and white kit... though even its baggy nothingness isn’t as bad as the two yellow/purple efforts and the diamonds monstrosity.

Top find. If you’ve got Twitter, chip in... I bet John would be interested to know (assuming he doesn’t already)

2 thoughts re the 2006-7 away kit:

1. Jon Stead is definitely the player to associate with this kit, as I think I’m right in saying that he was the only person to score for us when we wore it. Our other 7 away goals were scored in the home kit.

2. I actually liked that kit, but one problem with it - shared by the home kit - was that the capital one sponsor logo was a sticker which shredded (home kit) or peeled off (away kit). Shoddy.

looking forward to listening to part 2.

Chance for your marks on the kits we discuss in part 2!

Not 1977. It was 1978-79 season only

That’ll be mostly my mistake. Just listened back and John said 77-79, I obviously remembered it wrong when I was hastily banging out the twitter thread (or I just made it up). Probably mistakes galore. I did also identify Caloleoalan Lavatory’s chin as Stefan Scougall after all.

Glad you’re enjoying it. Incredible that you actually liked that shirt though. What are you scoring it?

The grey with lime trim shirt we never wore first showed up on that years FIFA game.
It comes out late September and it was a WTF is this option, it wasn't until a few weeks later it was revealed to be bought by the club.

It should have stayed in FIFA...

Yep, that one is in the Twitter thread too... and the PowerPoint, which I originally forgot to include: https://docs.google.com/file/d/1870CfkxHZrcyPqDIX1vVBRemzv_d_rHm

A word on the red kit used at Colchester in 1982 - that was not a United kit. It has no badge on it.

people have discussed this it on this board before - the consensus is that it was a training kit borrowed from Colchester.

The reason it was worn? The game was on Match of the Day and at that time teams couldn’t appear on TV in sponsored kit. United couldn’t wear the kit they had brought because it was sponsored.

There is footage of the game on YouTube.

really enjoying this series and looking forward to the third instalment!

Webding Do you guys cover the 1970s blue kit at all? I know that has cropped up on here a few times. Cheers
Afraid not, Deadbat is the anal preparation man (as in he prepares things in an anal manner, not... never mind), and only realised or remembered this the day after we recorded the pod. Maybe we can see if John is up for a short follow-up in a few months to pick up all the bits we didn’t cover.

I remembered about it ages ago - the discussion about us wearing it - then decided to do a podcast on kids in which there was a bit we discussed rare and unusual kits (like blue). So of course it would come up or then some idiot (me) would of course forgot to mention it. It's like we don't prepare for these pods at all. Shambles.

I’d rather not be involved in that one. Many thanks.

You’ll note that DB’s lack of using the full length (steady...) of his available scale extends beyond match reports and into other areas. While the rest of us went from 0 or 1 all the way to 10, there was only 2 to 9.5 from the morbid one (and I suspect the latter was under duress). Get off the fence, man.

Anyway...
