Life after Wilder?

I genuinely can’t imagine it. I know that sounds silly because no one player or manager is bigger than the club. But, even with the success of the Bassett and Warnock years, I never couldn’t imagine life after them. I just feel like we’ll never ever have a better manager. I agree with every word he says, I find it hard to criticise any decision he ever makes. And he’s a Blade.

I think he’ll end up a top Premier League manager and I just hope it’s with us. I’m 45 now and I really think we won’t have a better manager before I die. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but I love the man so much and I can’t imagine feeling like this about any other manager in my lifetime

Agree with most of that post, life without Wilder seems unimaginable. He’s transformed our club so much it’s quite incredible.

However I’m keeping an open mind regards how Wilder would cope in the PL.
Remember he’s no top class football experience, in fact most of his experience is league 2 and non league, he’s never managed any foreign players, never managed big ego’s, it would be a massive learning curb with Wilder possibly falling out with arrogant players, Another issue is that Wilder has always been a manager identifying players to sign, however at many PL clubs they take the foreign approach where the main man just “coaches” the team and a committee chooses which players are signed.

I also have no idea how he’d do with us, he’s always been positive and attack minded (which is brilliant) home and away but not sure how that style could be taken to Anfield or the Etihad, we could get thrashed 7-0. However another possibility is that maybe Wilder is a modern day Brian Clough and will take the PL by storm becoming one of the top rated managers in the country.

Agree but I remember many matches (even some during our promotion season) under Warnock where we looked seriously limited, some matches were great but in some matches we couldn’t string 3 passes together and I felt a bit embarrassed at our general shitness but we could always count on being effective, a long throw in or set piece to get a goal.

At least under Wilder we look (at worse) decent every single match.

We are playing away to an impresssive Leeds United in Saturday and when we had Bassett and Warnock I’d feel nervous against a big rival but I don’t feel nervous with Wilder because I know we’ll have some good attacking spells in the match and have spells of controlling rhe game. It was only the other week that Leeds blew away West Brom so maybe we shoukd feel nervous but no team (not even Norwich) has dominated us in the last few months, in fact 2nd half away at Norwich it was us that dominated them and I expect a similar spell at Elland Road, it’s all down to which team converts their chances.

This is as good as it gets for us because there doesn’t seem to be an succession planning going on from on high since we don’t have any strong leadership other than our manager. It’s a real concern, if Wilder goes then we would fall apart and that’s not the way to run a club.

This is what gives me a tiny bit of hope should we be in the playoffs. In every playoff final in the past we’ve deserved nothing. Circumstances may have conspired somewhat, but we’ve never had the belief in our footballing ability to play to our potential under the weight of expectation. We lacked a pattern and lacked technical footballers for the occasion.

But this side is coached, nay drilled, into a way of playing. Players will put their foot on the ball. We will be positive. It’s engrained.

Of course we might fail in a million other ways, but the coaching won’t have contributed. This is a footballing team.

If it's not with us, it'll be nowhere. Most PL clubs have a myopic view when it comes to managers - they've got to have a foreign name and had some vague 'success' on their CV. Wilder is truly a 'one-off' and what we're witnessing is a perfect storm where CW/AK get the players to 'buy into' the project - we've got a unique chemistry like Marco Silva had at Watford. Everton thought they could just poach him and it'd carry on at Everton. It doesn't work like that. It helps to have players mostly from lower leagues/smaller clubs and every time they step out at BDTBL they'll be playing in a stadium and in front of crowds that are unlikely to be replicated anywhere else in their careers. Players like Dwight Gayle, Tammy Abrahams etc. know that they can always move sideways or upwards.

Don't expect the media to suddenly realise how good CW - or most of the players - are. They've had nearly three years but still obsess about Bielsa, Farke or Lampard.

And that'll be the next challenge for all of us. Don't expect Wilder or McCabe to start chucking tens of millions around like Fulham as it's a total waste. CW will give the players who got us to the PL a fair crack, it's only right. It's the off-field stuff where a lot of problems lie. As we've seen with Sala at Cardiff, 'agents' appear out of the woodwork and all want a piece of the action. An extremely experienced manager like Warnock isn't immune from the sharks that circle at PL level or below.

I remember when Steve Bruce was going to Hull and there was a hold-up because he wanted £1m for 'image rights'. Yes, you read that right.

Let’s not forget Knilly though. Surely as Tufty’s right hand man his contribution must play a big part in where we are at present.

Knilly does play a big part, like Clough n Taylor. I just hope that they become ‘our Fergie’ n stay for the long haul. A good manager will win out given time. There are a few around doing ok in the hallowed place. Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe are examples of this. Let’s give CWAK a fair CWAK of the whip (see what I did there ). Let’s hope it’s years n years before we have to think about this.

I'd take Paul Warne when the messiah inevitably leaves. Seems like a decent bloke and plays decent football. I think the only barrier for him is the squad at Rotherham. i think wth a better team overall, he'd be doing really well.

I can’t see any Premiership team appointing a manager who’s no PL experience and has failed to get their current team up.
He could get poached by a bigger budgeted Championship club, but again if he fails to get us up would someone like WBA appoint someone who again doesn’t have promotion to the PL on their CV?
I just hope he gets to match his ambitions with us as that makes the nicest story and it would be one hell of a ride.

A very valid point.

Unbeliveably, Fat Frank was being seriously discussed in the media for the Leicester job! A bloke who has done nothing at Derby, who will finish this season just outside the playoffs, exactly as they have done in the recent past.

The fact that CW is Northern, managed outside the League structure and has had to work his way up, makes him unattractive to the media and their demand for instant gratification. Long may it be so.

The only obvious danger would be a 'down to Earth' type club like Burnley, Uddersfield or similar with British owners, coming in for him.
