What about trying to get Zach Clough from Forest? Would he bring something to our party?

Not a bad shout because he has ability, but not sure he's at the level we need. Probably not quite goalscory enough.

Apostolos Vellios is another we could look at from them. Wilder obviously loves a target man and we could get one who can actually move his body and use his feet in place of Hanson.

What about Nelson Oliveira from Norwich?
Ex Forest and i saw they were linked with re-signing him so that could indicate he’s available?

I totally agree. I've been one of McCabes strongest supporters - without him, we'd have been utterly in the shit. You've only got to think of some of our recent 'owners' to realise that. BUT...we're at a tipping point in our history. We've got a very good manager, have turned our fortunes around and have overtaken Wendy in every sense - league position, crowds etc. We could have gone up last season but no way were we ready for the PL like Wolves or even Fulham were - too much too soon etc. But while we don't want to do a Villa and 'sell the farm' we can't afford to stagnate and become an Ipswich, just happy to sit in the second tier and watch teams like Bournemouth, Watford, Stoke etc. stride on.

For once, we've got a sizeable transfer budget. Let's use it. Sensibly. I'm thinking Grabban or Vydra. The days of 'we can't afford him', 'what about his wages?' must be over or we'll end up like the little old lady afraid to turn on the heating. Is this why Warnock's Blades only lasted one season in the PL? Because he wasn't given enough to compete? Sure, the players he signed were mostly poor, but that's what happens when you shop at Moor Market or - like Wednesday - when you sign players who other teams have had the best out of.

Teams like Leeds, Forest, Wolves, even Wednesday (twice) have found rich buyers, so why not the Blades? Great stadium, city centre location in a 'buzzing' area? We'll never compete with the likes of Villa, but surely we're at least as attractive as Forest? I think it's because Mr. McCabe doesn't want to see his pet project and true love handed over.

Which is exactly what we did the last time we were in this division and we assumed we were at least too good to get relegated.

True, and we risk losing CW if that happened - a manager who took us out of Division One with a record points haul and who has proved we can more than live at this level - investment provided.
It's time to 'loosen the purse strings'.

Here's what we're up against!

So reports in The Sun that Nottingham Forest are close to signing Lewis Grabban from Bournemouth for just £5 million represents another brilliant piece of business from a side who have aced the transfer window so far

Just 5m - its just spare change int it?!?!?! Forest have already spent the Assombalonga money so they're going for it this season in a way that blows us out of the water at the minute. Not sure Grabban's worth 5m either!

He's worth every penny of £5m. He's 30 and has scored 89 league goals in the last six years.

FFS, we paid £4m for Beattie in August 2007, £3m for Ched Evans nine years ago. If we're not prepared to give CW a - modest - bit of cash support, we might as well not have bothered getting out of League One.

I just wonder whether we are looking at potential value for money players from Holland or the Scandinavian countries.

We could have already broken our transfer record this summer but....... wages.

Only United could find a way to make an extremely rare good budget so futile.

We're basically fishing in the same pond as before.

We're fighting against a strong tide until we increase our wage ceiling.

Let's spend money we don't have! Yeah!
And when I say 'we' I'm not putting a penny in and neither will most people but let's call for it anyway.
The best we can hope for is the league actually applying the FFP rules, not going to happen is it?

So we're the only club who have that pesky wage bill? CW said we had a £10m pot. Was this including the Brooks money? Is he - rightly - playing down our available funds? The pond we're fishing in is getting harder - thanks to parachute payments, wealthy owners etc. Even Newcastle will probably lose Matt Ritchie to Stoke - £15m and £4m a year wages on offer. 'The Scotland international was told he could go as Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez needs to sell players to buy replacements.' Compare and contrast with a lot of our fans who say selling Brooks is some kind of betrayal.

We can't let the 'upsetting dressing room harmony' re. wages argument hold us back. Again, every club faces this. Imagine getting promoted to the PL (or Championship) - a higher level so better players are required. A lot of players who actually helped achieve that promotion will be jettisoned and those that remain will see players brought in on much higher wages. It's how football - and much of life - works.

All football fans want to see year-on-year progress for their team and actually do 'put a penny in'. Not enough, obviously, but they have a right to expect some kind of return on their 'investment'. Do Wednesday fans fund the outrageous wages for Hooper? Fletcher? Rhodes etc? Gate money alone can't keep a club progressing (see Matt Richie, above) As for FFP, it's not that simple. Some teams behave as if they're on a FOBT and try to buy their way into the PL (Wednesday) and some like Derby try to build a team that consists of youth, experience and proven ability.

I'm certainly not throwing my toys out (they went years ago :D). CW could well have targets identified which we know nothing about. But we can't continue with this parsimonious attitude (from the board and a lot of our fans). Rotherham fans will be in for a season of struggle as they're way down in the Championship financial pecking order. They - like Burton - may punch above their weight, but they'll get relegated sooner rather than later. Surely we're better than that?

Make no mistake, we dodged a massive bullet two/three years ago when Wednesday failed to beat Hull and Huddersfield. Them in the PL would have opened a gap between us that couldn't be closed. But they didn't. So let's not repeat the mistakes of our all-too-recent past and lose players (and our best manager for years) because we failed to put up a fight.

Where did you get the figure of 10 million from ( are you close to Wilder ? )
He said its going to be a slow burner this window, whatever that tell you ?.
He obviously knows what he's doing, just calm down and wait for things to happen,
one sure we will be happy with his recruits or is your confidence in him waiting.

Fair enough hadn't realised he'd scored that much to be honest over the years. For us he's the sort we can't afford and one of our rivals will inevitably snap him up.

It was in The Stir about 3 weeks ago (before we sold DB). Maybe that was the £10m he was alluding to? Anyway, I believe it if it's in The Stir...

No, I'm not close to Wilder. If I was and blabbed about what he'd told me, I wouldn't be close for long.

And no. My confidence in him isn't waiting. Neither is it waning. ;)

I am starting to think owners would have preferred to stay there sometimes. They expressed their desire to get out of League 1 as soon as possible and now they are like "Shit, its a bit expensive this division than when we were last here. He wants what? more than £15k a week? Fucking hell! I remember when they used to want a couple of grand a week."

I had another look at his record and at 6m now I still think that's overpriced. He scored 3 goals for Reading in the Championship 2016-17 season but he did well last season granted. Could go either way that and he's not likely to have much re-sale value at 30 now. Saying all that of course I'd love it if we signed him because he would be a threat but 6m seems overpriced in my view. If he gets Forest promoted then he'll be a bargain of course.

6m, crazy money for an 30 (& half) year old. a 23 - 25 yr old is fine because its an investment where you hope will have many seasons & the way football is a resell value. i couldn't remember him being every a proflic striker so i checked on Wikipedia is seasons by season tally his last 4 seasons in the championship have been

2013-14 - 44 games 22 goals
2014-15 - 36 games 12 goals
2016-17 - 16 games 3 goals
2017-18 - 19 games 12 goals / 15 games 8 goals

His best season was arguably last season given he scored 12 in 19 games for the car crash that is Sunderland FC and then 8 in 15 so presumably that has made him in demand and there's so few forwards that are available (Gary Madine at 8m!) and proven and at 6m its within the reach of about 6 or so clubs at this level - one is Forest who are clearly going for it for one season and personally I hope it ends in tears.

Its still a lot to pay for him though but Forest seem to be willing to take the gamble. If we were to spend that type of figure I'd rather us sign Jack Marriot.

And if he was 25 and scored 20 goals a season, he wouldn't be £5-6m. Brooksy has age on his side, could be called an 'investment' and scored 3 goals in 30 apps. last season.

£10m.

But thats a different question if he was 25 then great buy at 6m but hes not hes almost exactly 30 & half. Surely if you splash that huge amount you want it to be long term plan like a long rumoured hogan. But instead its alot of money for a short termism, which is just falling into the trap aston villa & wednesday fell into
