Legacy contracts - 2 players outside the new financial model

I guess that Julian Winter was talking about Doyle and Collins.
Presumably he's doing all he can to offload them?
Collins I personally think would be a big loss but we do have Hill and Higginbotham as ready-made replacements.
We can certainly afford to lose Doyle if we can find someone to take him on. Especially if the Coady deal is confirmed.
Either way, I'd much rather lose those two than Maguire and Long who won't be on "legacy" contracts and who should be the future of the club.
Are United actually going about things the right way for once or is there still plenty of time for them to chuff it up?

We also have McGinty, Kennedy and Barry. As Weir said he wanted a tight squad where everybody are close to the first team, centre half is one position where we could afford to lose someone. I'd look for one central midfielder (Coady sounds interesting) and one more forward personally (preferably someone who can play the lone striker role as well as winger).

Just spoken to my Liverpool supporting friend at work (season ticket holder) who tells me Coady is a good player but just needs the experience of first team football. Good things expected from him.

Made some bench appearances towards the end of the season as well as playing in a couple of Europa League games. Sounds like a box to box midfielder (we've missed that!) who can also play at the back. Apparently he takes an excellent penalty and will also chip in with a few goals. To quote my mate "Models himself on Gerrard but not as good..."

I look forward to seeing him if he does sign. He'll certainly be signing on the proviso that he'll be here to play so would mean that it'd likely be him plus one from Doyle, McD, McGinn, Whitehouse.

Collins has proved hmself at this level though, the others haven't. I think he's our best center half, Mcquire included (though Mcguire will be better).

Someone like Cresswell for example, where we may be paying him a percentage of the wages allowing him to move to York on lower wages while we reduce our wage bill at the same time and bring in a younger, potentially more useful player.

Well he specifically said that one or two were still here. I think Collins and Doyle are the longest-serving players signed before we were relegated, so it seems likely that it must be them two.

They were talked about in the same question, but I don't think they're related. Legacies relate to the past, so he was saying that these are still accounted for in the budget whilst one or two players at the club are over the preferred 'maximum' wage.

I reckon the legacies relate to the likes of Cresswell and Monty who we allowed to leave and will have been taking a huge pay cut to leave their contract a year early.

The thing that angers me about this, if it does refer to Doyle and Collins, was that these were supposedly cheaper deals that had to be entered into once we sold off good young players or players on unsustainable wages - but now these very same contracts are supposedly unsustainable.

They are outside the model alright, because the model is behave like you have the same budget as a team with an average attendance of 4,000, despite the fact that we are the second best supported side in the division with limited/no external debt.

A cynic might say that United are having a season off because (a) Wolves are sure to go up automatically (b) we won't go up in the playoffs and (c) that leaves one spot but it's too expensive to go for that, so let's keep it as cheap as possible, hope we aren't terrible and hopefully sell a couple of our best players for more than we paid them. And that is the limit of our ambition.
