Leeds will do better than us

Norwich were great first game of last season and continued for a while with plaudits at the way they played

Norwich went to Anfield first game last season and were bummed smooth and at high speed with no lube by the bindippers.

Norwich ... despite being everyone's 'they stay up' favourites, fell out of the trapdoor.

Leeds look 'capable' but Liverpools defence yesterday was possibly the worse I have seen it for at least three seasons. VVD was almost Collinseque in his doddy-footedness and lack of concentration.

Had their defence been as sharp as it was against us, the conversation this morning would be about 'Bielsa's Leeds United (Champions of Europe) have stern reminder on the mountain they have to climb back in the top flight as they go down 4-0 to the proper Champions'

All that unrequited love is wasted on Bielsa. Pep and Potch have declared their feelings for the Argie maestro. But the bucket sitting “genius” himself only has eyes for our Chris.

I haven't really heard anyone say Leeds will do better than us. Lots of people think they'll do well, but then lots of people thought Norwich would do well. And lots of people thought we'd be hopeless.

Leeds looked decent coming forward today and suspect at the back. They were playing Liverpool though. They were brave and went for it and much as I hate them I've got to respect that. On the other hand, game free from expectations, players well up for it, 0 points acquired, 2 penalties given away.

After all the shit we got last year we should be the last ones predicting doom for anyone. Let's play a few games and then see how they look.
Exactly !
We don’t want to sound like those who were pompous about us last year.

Right you come from Sheffield you hate Leeds, it's born into you.

That said Weeds played well but if that defence keeps up they'll concede loads of goals okay the media are all wanking over them but, it's the 1st game and they were bound to show up and have a go. It was better to watch than Norwich having their tummies tickled last season, I know we were poor after long break but Pool were as bad and luckily they had a massive lead, had it been say 8 points City would have caught them.

Liverpool won't be the force they were last season oh yes they'll be up there but I don't think as potent as they were I mean Watford arseholed them 3-0 and they went down.

You have to take your hat off to Leeds the way they went at Liverpool but they looked gassed out for the last twenty minutes or so

Liverpool looked really poor all over the pitch and only upped their game when Leeds tired

I’ve spoken about Leeds chances with my learned football friends and we all think 2 scenarios could happen

1:They could do a Sheff United
They have a similar style to us in that they are organised and well drilled play high tempo football.
They are excellent out of possession and work so hard closing down the opposition.
They are alsp positive snd like us will genuinely go out to win..regardless of the opposition
So if they finished as high as 10th I wouldn’t be shocked.

2: They could do a Norwich
Remember thst Norwich were champions like Leeds playing impressive attacking football.
Their fans were confident like Leeds fans as they knew they would continue to play attacking positive football even in the PL.
Farke (like Bielsa) was really stubborn and instead of being pragmatic and focusing on his defence they continued to play open attacking football.
Confidence quickly drained away and they just kept playing good footbsll but losing.
So Leeds might continuously get punished and struggle...so.it wouldn’t surprise me if they are relegated.
Given their style of play, I suspect they will win a few games by 3 or more goals, but due to the standard of football being higher than they're used to, could well lose quite a few more games by a similar goal margin. I don't think they'll be getting a great deal of 1-1 or 0-0 draws.

Anyone else heard the same and is sick of it?

agree with all of that.
The spunk fest is par for the course but let’s not get dragged in and let’s keep some dignity........
Leeds played a very high press and Liverpool were rattled,it was a great game to watch.Shit defending from both sides.
We don’t have to wait long to play them and we won’t be playing into their hands with an ultra high back line.
We’ll keep things tight and composed and hopefully knock em down a peg or 2.....Return of the Bash.

I have no problem with Bielsa's current Weeds team in fact their levels of fitness this early in the season are a credit to their coaching staff. Not many teams will press Pool for 80 minutes at Anfield. That was the difference yesterday it wasn't a unique style, only one team has that in the EPL and that is SUFC with our overlapping CB's.

Bielsa exposed Lpools weakness, the defensive frailties of their full backs, as we did for a while at the Lane but the big lump at the back didn't gift us a goal as he did yesterday. How embarrassing for him to give a goal on a plate to a player as poor as Bamford :D . Harrison destroyed the over hyped TAA and Phillips provided some useful passes out from the middle. A contrast to the nut job determined to break players legs we experienced in the championship.

They'll cause us some problems in a few weeks due to their pressing high up the pitch. We need to play to our strengths and not go long when they push up on Norwood. Weeds defence is poor and if Saleh hadn't been such a greedy two hat second half yesterday determined to get his hat trick they would have conceded more late on.

As for the media whores who espouse the greatness of the Revie cheats, who any fair minded fan would have a problem with, they need to do their research into why Revie ran away to the Arab Emirates.

Last nights game reminded me of our first game in the PL against Liverpool when Stevey (sorry Gerrard) took a dive at the end and got a penalty. Difference was for us we were pegged back to a draw whereas Leeds LOST

In fairness Bielsa is like Wilder in sense that he won't just "park the bus his team will attack but, okay having a great forward line but if shit defence you end up with Newcastle under Keegan.

Liverpool’s defence was shocking and I bet they won’t be that bad all season. Leeds have a good goalie but that won’t alone see you through in this division, defence will though and theirs looked bad

True their positive attacking approach deserves credit...it was an entertaining game to watch
however there are difference between Wilder and Bielsa.
Wilder has had plenty of success where as Bielsa (even at 65 years old) has hardly won a thing.

Wilder (or is it Knill) learns and evolves his tactics whereas Bielsa is stubborn and plays the same football over and over...even when it’s failing.
Wilder is a leader and motivator of men whereas when Leeds were falling apart 2 seasons ago Bielsa went into his shell showing no leadership.

Leeds will stay up easily - it's their all action style that will cause opposition problems.

They will not keep up the physical assault because the extra quality teams have in the premier league will quite simply play round and through them.

Their all action style nearly got them promoted when we did but their squad depth wasn't deep enough so they ran out of steam but fair do to Bielsa, that problem was resolved last season.

Bielsa is over rated - his record at clubs/countries is not that good. He leaves when things go wrong. His game plan revolves around possession, but it's what you do with it that counts - ask Leicester when they won the premier league and even our porcine neighbours won 2 nil yesterday with only 38% possession.

What will count with Leeds is when Bielsa leaves after this season when their fans will have a city wide meltdown - he stays no where very long when at a club - strange that?

They still lost. Opening day too. You expect a bit of unpredictability. Plus we took 4 points off Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Wolves. So argument invalid. We also only lost 1-0 to Liverpool in one of the games.

I don't get the journo on the innovative comment unless he's trying to be provocative.

It's pretty clear Wilder's approach was lauded as innovative, yet after 1 game of watching Leeds he's already bowled over. Either a bit of recency bias or he's easily impressed.

Not unexpected. As far as innovation, we are last season's news!
And that’s the way I like it and I’m sure wilder does too⚔️

This be true but I was comparing the 2 in their reluctance to just go and play a draw, in that sense very alike, Wilder has been a breath of fresh air to United and I've seen every one since John Harris we've had a couple of good/decent ones but the shit by far outweighs the good.

Leeds have a good goalie ? Was he suspended or injured last night ?

Spanish bloke is shit, the young lad they had in the net yesterday is an improvement

He was fucking awful ,ended up further back in the net than nyjland and was all over the place every time the ball came in the box

I think if George hadn't had that accidental slip in the early stages of our game at Anfield we would have put up a much better display.

So Liverpool's defence was shocking but won't be that bad all season but Leeds defence looked poor and definitely can't improve? I hope you're right but it's daft judging a newly promoted side's defence based on an opening game against the likes of Salah and Mane. Everyone's defence has looked poor against them.

Remember Palace and Bournemouth fans saying that was the worst they'd play all season but it was the best we'd got? Don't fall into that.

The take away from the match yesterday are that Leeds are fit, organised, and not at all innovative. They have a playing a style that has been in vogue since Klopp's spell at Dortmund, and used for some time before that by smaller clubs. Astute viewers will have noticed the high volume of bodies they commit in the opposition half; how high their defensive line is; and how isolated their centre backs and wide defensive players are. Liverpool attempted to play through this press the vast majority of the time and came a cropper numerous times; conversely, Leeds did the same despite a ponderous Liverpool press, and will count themselves lucky not to have been exposed by a poor Liverpool front three lacking their usual ruthlessness.

Going forward Leeds will face much greater tactical examination as more pragmatic teams than Liverpool (last night at least) play over and around their press. Having said that, if I was Klopp I'd have probably signed up to a basketball match pre match - conformable in trusting that my front three would score more than the Leeds lads. One of the problems Bielsa has is maintaining confidence in his team. If you get some good hidings players can lose confidence in this press and the distances become too big between your lines. How many roastings can the backline take before the defence drops 5-10 yards instinctively, or the midfield drops to cover the back lines? If that happens ala Norwich, it's not just teams playing over and around you that's the problem; it's teams playing through you and picking you off too. Bielsa has a reputation as an ideologue, so, if thinks start going tits up he's likely to go "full Farke": - rigidly and somewhat immaturely sticking to his ideals rather than tailoring them for the next opponent.

A word of caution I'd give to Leeds: It's not the increase in technical ability that's the startling thing about the premier league - although their are clearly outstanding technicians (De Bruyne, Silva, Fernandes, Ozil etc). It's the increase in raw athleticism and physicality. Almost every team has a Sarr, Abraham, Mane type player or two, that can expose you on transition from wing back or full back positions. Your system has to be able to cope with the transitions or limit the impact on your team. Teams also have players they can go long early too if need be and miss a press out with (Wood, Mcburnie, Abraham, Giroud etc).

Where do I think they'll finish? I think they'll be ok and take some big scalps along the way. The teams that rigidly try and "play the right way" will be caught out by the Leeds press, and they'll win enough high scoring games. They'll entertain the public too. They'll be undermined by what they do in both boxes and teams with tactically astute managers who will exploit their style (see above). They have an idea (half the problem) and are fit , motivated and energetic unlike say West Brom, Villa, West Ham etc.

Fair play to Leeds. They went to Liverpool and attacked them. It was a bit like an underdog boxer who just comes out swinging. I feel that Liverpools' full backs are fantastic going forward, but not great defensively and teams can exploit this. However, all of Liverpools' goals came from horrific Leeds defending. If they gift teams goals like that every week, they are not going to win many games although like Keegans' Newcastle and Ardilles' Tottingham they may be fun to watch.

Bielsa is a very attacking coach who has done a very good job at various clubs and who some very good managers have worked under. However, he also understands how to manipulate the press and create for himself a mystique which then protects him as things go wrong and gets him further jobs. The bucket thing does he need it no so why do it simple for the image. He also doesn’t need to live above a sweet shop and walk to training either but the media have swallowed it hook line and sinker this fake humble stuff no one who plays or manages football at the top level is humble. So yeah get used to the love in because he’s going to cultivate it all year and he’s very shrewd in how he does it.
I believe he also speaks decent English but always uses a translator in interviews to take the pressure off
