I mean, they've put "modern" football (whatever that means) and it ends with a "?"
So, they aren't even convincing themselves.
But, let's just add it to the high stakes Monday. Winner claims "Home of football" title.
Don't forget the original Leeds team, Leeds City, sanctioned for illegally paying players during the first world war and subsequently dissolved. Leopards never change their spots....Leeds, the footballing powerhouse that, despite a huge metropolitan area and population and a vast uncompeted geographical area to its north, can maintain 1 mediocre league side. They can take their 3 square inches of football history, scrunch it into a wad and shove it up their rancid shitpipes.
Who created that? Looks like a GCSE project
Completely agree.Regards most of these 1st claims there’s a lot of semantics.
Like what is “football”?……first you have to agree the definition of “football”
Because in 1800’s most people played rugby football…..then some people changed bits of the rules to make it nearer association football.
Early football was a hybrid of rugby and todays football…it was a very different sport to modern football.
So at what point do you say……they started playing proper football from a certain date?
Sheffield was responsible for forming some of the early rules and eventually after meeting with the FA many of their were adopted in the modern game
But football exactly as we know it now “modern football” took a few decades to evolve.
It’s similar regarding oldest ground in the world…….what is a “ground”?
Sheff United fans say they have the oldest ground….records show that BL was built as a cricket ground and had its 1st football match played there in 1862.
Mansfield fans say they have the oldest ground, the site where their ground sits used to be a field and records show that some matches were played their in 1861.
Does a field where organised football is regular played qualify to be called a ground?
Preston fans argue that Bramall Lane and Field Mill weren’t initially linked to the clubs. For example Sheff Utd played their 1st match at Bramall Lane in 1889 and Mansfield didn’t play at Field Mill until 1920. Where as Preston are the oldest tenants and have played at Deepdale since 1878, so Preston fans say in reality they have the oldest ground.
I’ve even seen Wolves fans claim to have the oldest ground in the world because apparently the site where Molineux stands used to be in a large park
And in that park in the early 1800’s there used to play several sports. One being a form of football, part rugby but also using feet like modern football.
One thing Sheffield can claim is to be the home of football culture…..regards “organised football”.
Football (or version quite close to current football) was probably played all over UK, including Scotland
But in the 1870’s Sheffield had over 50 football teams in the area playing in the world’s first leagues and cup competitions.
The Cromwell Cup even had the 1st paying spectators in the world. So Sheffield did play a massive role in creating the game as we know it today.
That is because of Field Mill (Mansfield). There seems to be some evidence of it being used back to 1850, whereas as BDTBL opened inAlso anyone notice this season the stadium announcer starts each match
‘Welcome to Bramall Lane…one of the most historical stadiums in the world”
Kind of think it’s a little embarrassing because surely at least 20 other clubs could say the same about their stadiums….but don’t.
Notice how it’s changed over the years…and makes you wonder if the club have received legal threats. For years it was always
‘Welcome to Bramall Lane….the oldest stadium in the world” then it become
‘welcome to Bramall Lane…the oldest professional stadium in the world….then it became
‘welcome to Bramall Lane…the oldest major stadium in the world” then
‘Welcome to Bramall Lane….one of the oldest stadiums in the world”
now it’s watered down yet again to “one of the most historical stadiums in the world”.
Think we should use the description “…..the most historic ground in the world” because it is, more history than Wembley or Hillsboro etc.
Or go back to “one of the oldest ground in the world” because that is also fact.
And the oldest part of it being built in 1973Also anyone notice this season the stadium announcer starts each match

The Bramall Lane stand was built in 1966.And the oldest part of it being built in 1973
It's a bit like triggers sweeping brush
The silly bastards

From what I remember reading, the people promoting football - from Sheffield - went out of their way to try to generate enthusiasm for the game in Leeds, and struggled to get a lot of interest, which may be linked to the quote regarding the Sheffield-Leeds match. They stuck to cricket and rugby - then came around to football much later than other cities, which partly explains why there’s only one team.Leeds: A rugby town, not even sure what ‘football’ is ?

I believe this partly relates to Mansfield's fortunes- as a lower league side they sometimes find themselves out of the football league allowing us to claim the oldest professional ground title, but when Mansfield get promoted back into the league we have to water it down accordinglyAlso anyone notice this season the stadium announcer starts each match

Records like that change all the time dependant on promotion/relegation.I believe this partly relates to Mansfield's fortunes- as a lower league side they sometimes find themselves out of the football league allowing us to claim the oldest professional ground title, but when Mansfield get promoted back into the league we have to water it down accordingly

Which ties in with another Gary Sinclair variation when he added "in contiguous use" to his introduction.
Get both on the honours boardYeh I remember that….he did.
It just shows how “oldest ground” has so many different definitions.
Same as “oldest club” has different definitions. I understand football at Cambridge University was more advanced than in Sheffield, so could claim to be older
But the competitions they had were between informal teams not formal clubs, so you have to define what a club is.
Still don’t like how the current stadium announcer says “welcome to Bramall Lane….one of the most historic grounds in the world”.
Not sure…but maybe it sounds a bit tin pot….like celebrating and telling the world you once finished 5th in the league.
