I think it's a valid question, but there are (to my mind) two mitigating factors that would absolve there being too much blame:

1- Clarke is of a calibre at this level that means he can be moved on fairly effectively without horrendous losses being made; and

2- the speed of his departure will confirm once again that CW isn't too proud to realise his mistakes and put things right quickly (Adkins and Clough both terrible at this).

Bonus third reason, we are top of the league, CW is currently my favourite person in the world, closely followed by AK ;)
Closely followed by............me!

I completely agree, maybe though Mawson had the foresight to see where both us and Barnsley would be at the end of the season.

Based on the fact he's playing PL football now, seems like a masterstroke on his part.

Is this aimed at me?

If so, I should point out that I'm not in the know, and don't know anything about Clarke's contract. I just happen to be friends with 2 footballers at other clubs who mention the odd thing here and there in conversation.

Sorry for any misunderstanding, but I did mention that I didn't doubt your point. There was no attempt to criticise or cause a problem between you or I.

I disagree, I think finding a buyer for Clarke would be difficult. I doubt many clubs could offer comparable wages to what he's on here.

Yeah no problem mate, wasn't trying to cause a problem either. Was just keen to make sure I don't come off as sounding like some wannabe ITK teenager!

All blades aren't we? :)

If any of the above does happen and Clarke is deemed surplus to requirements and shipped out, will Wilder and Knill get any abuse on here, should never have brought him in, , such as waste of a place, far too much money, 3 1/2 year contract etc etc, because if clough or adkins were still here the amount of stick would have gone on for around a week, the answer is, of course they wont because Wilder has too much support. However it would be a (slight) black mark dont you think? or would it be he's a good manager and realised his mistake and acted even if it has cost us?

Interesting point pal. Here is how I would look at it; In summer signings, CW and AK identify the need for a different outlet up front, someone taller, stronger, and proven at scoring at this level. The only (?) option that fits the bill, at the time, is Clarke. During the 6 months at BDTBL, CW and AK (and scout network) continue to keep the radar open, making notes of who is impressing and could also fill that role.

In January, see if anyone else has made an impression, if not, you still have your original player in place.

It's looking more and more like things aren't going to work out with Clarke, but I'd say it was more a case of the last thing you said: it's not like Wilder has belligerently stuck with a Clarke - Sharp partnership.

I wouldn't really see it as a mistake. It was a bit of a gamble to give a chance of stability to a player who's regularly been a handful, but never stayed put long enough to really become part of something. He's old, but for a target man (especially one off the bench), a contract ending at 34 wouldn't go too far beyond his best.

The gamble (probably) hasnt payed off, but I'd rather see him keep taking risks like Clarke than not. Also, It's interesting that Wilder seems perfectly happy to gamble on players later in their careers - most managers only tend to do so with with younger players. He did it with Ricky Holmes last year, and the same with Wright and Duffy with us.

One of the best first touches and finishes I've seen from a League 1 striker, bags of ability and not just his abilities of scoring aswell he's pretty quick and knows how to beat a defender, Wilder did mention in his interview with Andy Giddings earlier today that we are in negotiations with a couple of players and hes confident of bringing them in, said he wants a RB to replace Reece Brown, a winger and maybe a forward, so forward wise Gregory would be the perfect player to team with Billy upfront, two blades fans upfront scoring goals for us, I'd like the sound of that .

Lets be honest this aint actually gonna happen, is there any genuine rumour behind it or is it more just hope

If he's shipped out it will be nothing like under Clough or Adkins, who would have given him a contract so fat that an earthquake couldn't shift him until his contract was up.

I think Gregory's one for the summer.

Don't think we'll sign another striker now. By 'forward player' I think Wilder means attacking midfielder/winger, maybe one who can also play up front.

Yep and aside from the joke I don't understand why people ask for sources or who people have heard things from.

If they were revealed there would be a lot of people losing their jobs.

I guess what he is saying Barnster, is did you hear this from another Blades fan, or someone connected or generally "ITK".

"Just a quick note to ask anyone posting rumours in this section to please name their sources and provide links and quotes to sites where relevant.

It helps anyone else reading to gauge how seriously they can take the rumour :)

Cheers!"

Both on this occasion

That was one of the things I was talking about, it doesn't make any sense to me.

I cannot name my source as the guy who told him will lose his job. Unless by "source" it's just asking for you to say "someone well connected" but then that's just the same old guff that every fucker comes out with so I don't see how that's helpful in any way.

It wasn't Magicdevine or Berty was it Barno? :D

I refuse to believe that a player who by all accounts would cost £1m - £1m+ to get, is headed our way

Whilst he would be an investment and part of next season's Championship squad provided we achieve our goal, I just don't see the board allowing this sort of money to be spent at this time on one player, especially with the costs already associated to getting Samir and of course the others CW has on his short list

It's time for Radio Sheff to ask CW outright whether he is on our radar or not and then watch whether he categorically rules it out, or just smirks at the reporter :)

Barney..............got owt else you can add to the op that might convince me? ;)

Unfortunately ...... you're giving way too much credit to a radio pig reporter, suggesting that they may ask a pertinent and searching question that isn't related to the MASSIVE !! ;)

UTB & FTP

Well I for one believe Barney, if only for the hype!

Barney, let me try this from another angle. If I knew your source would I be laying some money down?

Look if you were Gregory would you rather play for the scummiest club in England in front of 8k a week living in a one bedroom flat worth 1m or for your 'own' team who are top of the league, averaging 20k where 1m buys you a mansion ?

So there are 2 questions, does Wilder want him and will the board pay for him....I genuinely think the answer to both could be yes . It would be a real statement of intent by the board and just the right time to make it.
