It is a very odd surname? Anybody got any ideas?

I was wondering if its a way a family changes its name to make it sound a bit more acceptable, like perhaps it was 'Death' therefore de Ath which is still a bit morbid so they did what the French would do if a word started with a vowel and elided it as D'Ath? - I don't suppose we'll ever know.

Legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher had a band featuring drummer Rod de'Ath.
Died last year but still outlived Rory by the best part of 20 years!
