Goalscoring midfielder with promotion-chasing Northampton, unusual name, former protege of Poz Nige at Reading - what's not to like?

There was a long serving Reading goalkeeper called Steve Death. He is dead now!It is a very odd surname? Anybody got any ideas?
I was wondering if its a way a family changes its name to make it sound a bit more acceptable, like perhaps it was 'Death' therefore de Ath which is still a bit morbid so they did what the French would do if a word started with a vowel and elided it as D'Ath? - I don't suppose we'll ever know.
Exactly that.It is a very odd surname? Anybody got any ideas?

There was a bloke who worked at BT's Martleshham Labs years ago called Dr De'ath (pronounced Dee Ath) who got very grumpy when people mispronounced it.
I remember him, he's the only Mr. Death I've ever heard of.
