Prince Abdullah is a grandson of Saudi Arabia’s founder and shortly after buying 50 per cent of Sheffield United for £1 in return for an investment pledge, held a Saudi Government position. His cousin, Saudi ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is widely accused of ordering the assassination of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia is continually vilified for its appalling human rights record and litany of barbaric public executions of its own citizens, including beheadings and stoning to death.
One can only reasonably assume that Prince Abdullah’s acceptance of his Government position, albeit minor, was an indication of his support for its policies. But as distasteful as that may be, it isn’t the issue.
