i was told that hillsborough park couldnt be used as a fanzone as its too close to the ground and would cause traffic congestion with both the ticketless fans and the ones with tickets all trying to get to the same place

I'm sure you're right judge, but perhaps Hillsboro Park won't be a fanzone on Sheffield Matchdays... They'll probably use the 44k capacity Bramall lane as the fanzone when games are at the sty because we have a big tele:D

Says on the OS that Birch is going to seek clarification as to why Swillsville was chosen ahead of BDTBL

Wonder how they will spin it...

Can't say I go along with Highbury's sentiments.
I'll be hoping England don't get the tournament for the amusement factor.
And I do hope McCabe responds in the right way and decides he won't rest until he rubs collective noses in our success.

Please tell me you're not being sarcastic. They are a complete and utter laughing stock and this news does absolutely nothing to change that whatsoever. I'm sure Dude will be banging on about this for months to come but it doesn't change the fact they have a shit team, have just sacked a decent manager, have zero investment and are heading into the trap door.

Has a Third Tier team ever hosted a World Cup match?

Were Middlesboro in the third tier in 66?

I know Hillsboro is a disgrace at the moment but quite clearly with Plymouth, Bristol and Liverpool to some extent the grounds have been chosen on basis of what the plans look like and from the plans I have seen Hillsboro does look half decent. OK they have more work to do but when (not if as many are saying) England gets the WC, there is an inevitability that Hillsboro, by whatever means, will be renovated and upgraded. The follow on from this is that the fortunes of the club will improve, not automatically but the chances increase.

I don't really believe a word McCabe says and don't think he's anywhere near as special as most make out, but I feel a bit for him on this one.

If we'd kept our place in the Prem and/or had actually improved the ground further by doing up the kop we may well have got it.
But at the moment we're just 10 pts above Wednesday, stuck in the same league, and up against a bigger ground with precedent for holding big tournament matches.

That has sections or a section condemned to public doesn't it??

And Leeds...

We're talking about 2018 don't forget and Bellend Road isn't a bad choice actually. Leeds has a much larger catchment area than Sheffield and there's plenty of open spaces around their ground for the fanbase thing. They often have large fairs on them

2018 Selections and Financial Guarantees

£300 Million in Financial Guarantees, what does that mean? Does it mean that the money is there in the bank accounts or is it like Donnington F1 Upgrade? Didn't they also give financial guarantees, but didn't deliver.

What I don't understand is that with so many grounds at 40,000 or above already, why are we putting bids in (at a time of apparent financial crisis) that relies in a lot of cases in complete new grounds or major spending?

Olympic Stadium - New Ground
Spurs - New Ground
Liverpool - New Ground (or Anfield)
Forest - New Ground
Sheff Wed - major Facelift
Bristol- New Ground
Plymouth - New Ground
Milton Keynes - Development?

Where is the money coming from for all these new grounds? Tax payers? Lottery? Private investment?

I read a quote that England is fortunate as it has so many great grounds. So why aren't we using them instead of relying on New build grounds that may or may not get built (Liverpool?)

Looking at the bid grounds the Sty is perhaps not the biggest risk, but it relies totally on public funding.

I'd certainly like to know the selection criteria and see how transparent it was.

I don't disagree that Leeds has a decent bid, but "Leeds has a larger catchment than Sheffield" Really? To what extent?

This is a fecking stitch up! It has Dave Richards and his cronies at the FA all over it. Len, you talk shit as usual. If anyone thinks that that pile of blue tin is even close to Bramall Lane as a modern venue, they should be asking David Blunkett to be their guide person.

The FA have stitched us up big time. How dare lil old Sheffield United take on the mighty West Ham of East London (god bless the queen mother) and WIN, showing the football powers to be totally and utterly feckin useless.

I can just see their smug little faces now knowing they have stitched up Kevin McCabe. To be perfectly honest i wasn't that fussed about being chosen as a venue, but the fact Hillsborough and Elland Road are in there im absolutely fuming!!!

Come on King Kev, put some proper money into the playing side of things and lets have our moment in the sunshine

I can wait for the KFC King to come out with his shit about it being good for the city.

His first thoughts when he found out about our plans were to attempt to get himself something out of it.... putting forward Hillsborough came second.

I can't wait for the explanation as to why they were favoured :) as the situation goes against pretty much everything they have talked about.

Not that I can see England being chosen now of course, our bid must be hilarious compared with others.

Viva Espanna is all I'll say can we vote for other countries?

OK, say Sheffield is a final venue city. How are the Pigs going to finance any expansion?

pig fan at work says they are going to get some money from the council...!!!!

if they do i for one will kick someones arse..... down at the council myself.........:D:D

So Hillsborough has been chosen and Bramall Lane hasn't. There will now follow several stages.

1. The bid goes no further. England doesn't get the World Cup. Strafford breathes massive sigh of relief, as he won't need to find a massive wedge to spend on his shithole. Hillsborough stagnates.

2. England gets the World Cup. Strafford immediately shits his pants, followed directly after by the world's biggest nervous breakdown. Investors do not appear in a puff of smoke.

3. Every new stadium is built, even the Scouse one. Others have been wonderfully upgraded. Even Elland Road looks all shiny, which it should given that it's owners, Leeds City Council, have almost bankrupted the city. All that is, except for one. Guess which one that is. Go on, have a wild stab in the dark. Yes, that's right.
Despite adopting several strategies, including crying like a big girl, begging fans, the council, Arab sheiks, American tycoons, Russian oligarchs, Japanese Yakuza and Chinese dot com billionaires nobody has helped Lee out with so much as a penny. Twelve Wednesday fans have done their best with some Polyfilla and a few paintbrushes, and that's it.

4. Strafford is forced to go cap in hand to the FA and FIFA, who tell him promptly to go away and stop widdling on the posh carpets.

5. Strafford has a master stroke. He approaches Kevin McCabe at Sheffield United. McCabe tells Our Lee in no uncertain terms to go and fuck himself.

6. Lee Strafford tops himself live on the new BBC local service, Look World Cup Leeds. Both of the matches that were to be hosted at Hillsborough are now played at Rotherham's new ground.

Milton fucking Keynes? Are you shitting me? I can understand Plymouth and Bristol as one is the only seaside option and the other is a big southern city amongst many northern towns. But Milton Keynes? The World cup is supposed to be an advert for our country and footballing culture, not a way to create depression-induced suicide amongst visiting foreign fans. Never mind the place is also the location of the shambles that was the MKDons saga.

They choose this cultural blackhole over the oldest ground in the world? What a joke

I'm pretty narked about it tbh. I don't know how much money Wednesday will receive in grants and so on, but why should they get money to do up their ground?

It'll look even funnier empty though which is one consolation if England get the tournament, which I seriously hope they don't now - sorry for anyone wanting to see world cup football close at hand.

How much easier do you think it is if you've got the potential selling point of hosting games for the biggest event in the world?
It ain't rocket science.
Not necessarily easy but definitely easier.
Similarly when you're shoving your prospectus around investors - it's a handy selling point.

I suspect it isn't going to transform Milton Keynes into a great footballing outfit.

All seems like a bit of an own goal for us, though it'll be interesting to see a full report on the decision-making process involved, if there is one mind. Availability of nearby accommodation was one factor considered - we've got a bloody hotel onsite! Even the objective observer will admit that their presentation of the ground improvements were poorer, even in the virtual world, so we really do have to ask some serious questions about why we haven't got this.

Was the fact that Sheffield City Council only approved the South Stand/car park development last night a factor - had Hillsborough already had all of its proposed developments given the green light?

Let's imagine that all our wildest dreams do come to pass. England wins the bid, and McCabe's and our dreams of United riding high in the Premier League happen. We get a new investor, who spunks a ridiculous amount of cash on us, we get into Europe and actually win a trophy. Then all the world's media will be asking "Why is the World Cup being played at a ground used by a fourth tier team, when in the same city the Champion's League winners' ground isn't?"

We can but hope.....

8 years to have a go at doing that.

Strafford has had a pop at United for not pulling together in a joint bid? What's all that about? Anyone know?

Panicking because his actual plan has backfired :D

He got the idea from Simon Davey.

When people are questioning you and your position, have a pop at United. Thing is, the Dingles and the Fowls will fall for it. They always do.
