Lacking pace

My concern is the midfield leaving the defence exposed, especially with the wing backs being so attack minded.

Could do with a CM that will get back quickly

Baldock looked pretty fast yesterday, the best of the new bunch.

as far as I remember the 70,s side wasn't blessed with pace , neither was the sides of warnock and bassett but we managed , no doubt some one will correct me

Deano was quicker than he looked and Littlejohn was one of the fastest in the country. Franz Carr was also very quick and I can't remember seeing Dane Whitehouse losing many sprints. Nathan Blake didn't run a lot, but when he did he ran fast. Warnock's promotion side included Kabba and Webber.

It is true that we coped well without a lot of pace last season, but we should keep in mind that our team was superior individually/technically. Several teams will match us in that department this season, so we should be looking to add more threats, more players who can complement what we have. It will be hugely interesting to see how we adapt.

Agree with you there. I think a bit of pace in the spine should be on the wish list in the next two signings. We'll see less of the ball and need to attack and break quickly.

Really can't wait for the season to start, some cracking games and lots of challenges.

True, with the exception of Geoff Salmons who was one of the quickest we've ever had.
Alan Woodward not possessed of pace?
How memory clouds the facts. Or time's passage makes me think we had a very quick winger when it wasn't a term that is redundant.

When do you ever see some fucker knock it past a defender and just bomb it, leaving the defender miles behind?

Can't remember that happening at all last season. The very top players can sometimes pull it off, not just because they're quick, but because the ball sticks to their feet.

I will let you into a little secret.

The main reason for this is that these days many full backs were in fact wingers or forwards at some point themselves. They are often the fastest players in the side.
Therefore the days of just knocking a ball past and doing a full back for pace are going the way of history.

I've been mocked for saying this since mid point last season.

Our better players (Fleck, Sharp, JoC) are technically excellent but Lavery aside we don't have anyone with top end pace/athleticism.

It's defensively I worry. If we bomb forward (which is our style) we have a pretty slow gaggle of CBs protected by Fleck and Couts... We'll get pulled all over the place.
top end pace ,,,, really how often is that appropriate ,
me thinks someone read Billy Whizz too much

Just concentrating on our forwards Rog, if Evans comes good he's got a bit of a sprint on him, certainly enough to cause most defenders problems. We've got the midfield to supply him with decent passes, so the potential's there if Evans has retained the pace we all saw from him previously.

Maybe, but the one difference between the Championship and League One is the pace of the game and opposition. I worry our defenders were caught flat footed numerous times last year and things will be even sharper next year....

I saw no discernible change of pace when we knocked out forest and then chamionship club charlton 18 months ago and that was with the team before it got fitter

In that case I'll bow to your far superior knowledge, stick my fingers in my ears, and pray that you're correct!!

Is that the same team dismantled at home by Crewe/Fleetwood et al?

I think that some people get confused on the subject of pace. For me pace isn’t necessary being able to run fast. Sometimes playing football the best option is to stand still. Pace is being able to move the ball quickly, coupled speed of thought and being able to read the game.

yes amazing really eole telling us its seedy gonzalez land in the championship , but dont know where from
I watched many champonship games last season and cant say speed looked prominent

I dont think the original poster is being negative at all. I think we do still need an injection of pace and power. The higher up you go, the more of it you need.
