My only concern at the minute is we need a bit of strength and particularly mobility. The Championship has the physicality of the Premiership now but just lacks the quality.

Key signings for me are a centre mid who can get up and down the pitch quickly and has some physical presence and a third centre defender with pace. Also another striker with some pace but suspect this will come at Christmas if we're struggling. Brooks and Thomas will add something to the mix. Possibly Graham might be in around the first team and Edna and Freeman are pretty mobile. I just feel we need a little bit extra in the team.

In Wilder we trust!

lacking pace ,,,, compared to whom
I see very few facsimiles of Usain Bolt watching the championship last season

did we not get 100 points last season by being fitter than the rest of the league , lasting longer, out pacing defenders
according to sprint times that get recorded we were the fastest team in league one last season

I've been mocked for saying this since mid point last season.

Our better players (Fleck, Sharp, JoC) are technically excellent but Lavery aside we don't have anyone with top end pace/athleticism.

It's defensively I worry. If we bomb forward (which is our style) we have a pretty slow gaggle of CBs protected by Fleck and Couts... We'll get pulled all over the place.

When do you ever see some fucker knock it past a defender and just bomb it, leaving the defender miles behind?

Can't remember that happening at all last season. The very top players can sometimes pull it off, not just because they're quick, but because the ball sticks to their feet.

It's something to look at defensively. I don't know much about Leonard but assume he's reasonably mobile. I suspect Wilder will surprise us with a couple of signings early next week.

Brooks is the answer to all of your concerns :)

But I take your point, you ain't gonna see that in the championship

At the moment I think Basham - Stearman - O'Connell is the favoured back three, and I think it's actually quite mobile. Agree that we miss the central midfielder type you describe, and based on the chase for Leonard, I think Wilder wants such a player as well. If he can't get the right man, he'll continue to push Basham forward to make us more competetive there when needed. Whiteman's development will probably be assessed in January.

A quick forward who can also play wide would also complement what we have. Maybe a Premiership loan?

We don't need a lot extra to be competitive. If we added all the things as stated above we would probably win the division. Our only aim this season is to compete and be comfortably safe and I think we are about 3 signings away from being able to achieve that.

So the difference you say between Premiership etc is pace.

So surly the players in the lower leagues that do have pace end up quite quickly in the Premiership. Wilson/Deeney etc.

Yes, we want talent, pace, determination etc. But these players are in the Premiership or at the top clubs anyway. We just have to find the players that don't run 100m sub 12 seconds we deal with the ones sub13 seconds.

Not sure Stevens would be happy with the name you gave him.

I think we need more pace up front and more physicality/mobility in centre midfield. That's a minimum, to which the addition of real quality will see us genuinely challenge.

Good goal, that's why he plays for Real, but if the defender is going to foul him he should have done it properly.

as far as I remember the 70,s side wasn't blessed with pace , neither was the sides of warnock and bassett but we managed , no doubt some one will correct me

Bloke at the side of me yesterday said "that Brooks is very one footed"

I fucking despair at times.

I agree in terms of a pacey box to box midfielder who can sit if needed. I thought that would be a problem last seas, but it wasn't. However, if we're trying to hold a lead then someone a bit more solid defensively would be great to bring on.

We win a friendly 9-0 and the moaners still appear saying we're lacking this or that.

Life just is not fair.

Its one of those 'nice to haves'. We'd all love to see a tricky winger knock the ball past his man then go direct for goal or whip a cross in. Like Jamie Murphy used to do perhaps? For me, Murphy was the best type of pacey player.

JCR is another type. But look at how he played? 1 in 5 good games? Beat his man 3 times then goes back and beats him again before twatting the ball nowhere near where he intended to.

More pace and trickery would be nice, but i think its more of a luxury at the expense of something else.

Freeman, Duffy, Lafferty, Lavery and Clarke were not slow last season, for what we needed.

Sharp is probably one of the slowest strikers we've had in terms of pace over distance, but his speed of thought and touch is quicker than Lavery's over a few yards. Ched is quick over short distances. I'd rather short sharp passes and the ability to change the pace of the game with the ball, like we had last season than all out pace and no end product.

The other key point is that we don't really play a game where we need raw pace in the attacks. We don't force sides to play a high back line. We attack through 3 strikers (or 2 attacking midfielders and one lone striker) or we use the wingbacks, so we're not playing that deep to start.

Not to say that we don't need pace in the attack, we would always benefit from it, but i think memories of Cheds pace are short. He has some decent pace, perhaps it won't be enough, but then Lavery does have decent pace.

I agree we need some pace in the back 3, but that would be to cover for mistakes or fuck ups.

We didn't need pace last season because most teams 'parked' the bus, and the ones that didn't weren't any quicker than us anyway.

Next season we'll have less ball, and will need to exploit teams 'on the break' more often. In that scenario pace is a good asset.

It's not a dig at the team, or management to say we need pace. Every team in the world can improve one way or another. To stand still is to go backwards.

Whilst I don't disagree, I think our priorities (in the way that we play) dictate the attributes we need.

The skill set of our team is primarily footballing abilities which is based on fitness, hardwork and good organisation. Pace probably comes secondary to these

Quite the hypocrite t'owd Rod sometimes. ;)

Has a go at people complaining, after a 9-0 win, that Brooks will be sold.

Starts a thread complaining about a lack of pace.

exsqueeze me
if we bomb forward ?
surely thats what we did last season, bombed forward at every opportunity
and lost 3 of our last 42

I don't think we have anyone who can come on and change a game with their pace, Lavery is no quicker than most championship strikers even though he's ours.

Then again I don't think we are that slow.

JOC and Basham are athletic and quick off their feet, they won't be beaten for pace that often. Baldock is rapid. Fleck is no slouch and I haven't seen Stevens or Thomas yet.

As I forecast in the Stocksbridge thread last week !

Most enjoyable day watching old and new faces.
My only slight disappointment was no show of Ched in team.

Welcome back football!
