Lack pace

Lacked pace for a while but no one seems to think its an issue. Which it isn't when you consider how well we have done without it but to go up a level we could do with some.

We're masters of the half counter attack. Especially away from home.

We win the ball back, work it out neatly, get to the halfway line and then....... go absolutely fucking nowhere. Because no one's anywhere near quick enough to go beyond opponents, run in behind defenders and get onto a through ball.

Then it ends up back with Egan.

Maybe another 50 signings down the line we'll have brought in someone who can run...

We are not up a level yet. We need to adjust when teams change tactics. Midfield was poor second half .

If we score the 2 chances in the first half then all this talk of pace is somewhat muted, also we invite them onto us & that pace is not as useful, but once we are chasing the game well......

A good example was when Dowell tried to play Clarke in behind and it was like watching a donkey chase after a carrot.

Well......that was a little lethargic tonight, even the finishing on the missed chances was sluggish, I’m sure stat wish it looks good (especially first half) but unfortunately it’s not alway the analytics that get you the result. Quite underwhelming. UTB! Bring on Norwich!

Yep, pace is useful over short distances too. Fancy that!

No-one, not even Wilder, will convince me that some real pace in the team (the right player of course) wouldn't make a difference.

We'd create more chances I'm sure of that.

Maybe, it's just that package isn't attainable for us with our "budget"? The right player with pace...

Clarke doesn't just look physically slow he's a second behind when he reacts to things now as well.
Someone like Sheringham said the first yard is in your head, Leon is either disinterested or distracted.

....Sheringham didn't say the second bit.

Just a bit harsh. It was well overhit.
Clarke is quicker than folk give him credit for.

Oh aye, just not quicker than most defenders in the Championship. If we were playing against turtles every week he would leave them for dust.

Our piss poor budget doesn’t help but it should still be possible to bring in someone decent with pace.

I genuinely can't think of anyone, when you consider we also have no scouting outside of the UK.

We have a habit of trying to ride the storm when teams go up a gear. We kind of half heartedly try to match them, stuck in two minds whether to sit back and defend with a thought to perhaps, maybe have a counter attack or try and keep playing our game. It was almost inevitable that we’d concede

Well for one, he was quicker than the defender who was chasing after that ball with him.

The Flash would have struggled to get on the end of that.

We can't keep losing games and trying to find excuses on this board for each loss.

We DON'T have a lot of pace - we have to do it differently - Madine IS the different way.

The game was lost by half time by not going in winning - we do this every now and again, it's just the lack of quality that at times shows up like this.

Plenty of games to go.

UTB

I am not so sure it seemed to spin up and slow down before going out. Anyway regardless of that particuliar through ball our concerns about a lack of pace still stands.

Playing with only two wide players limits the areas we could add pace in.

The form of the front 3 makes it difficult to bring in anybody who'd get a game.

But regardless, we should have better pace options than Johnson and Washington. We need someone who can actually get on the pitch.

The midfield are terribly slow at catching up and supporting the front two or particularly at getting into the box.

I notice Adam Armstrong is doing well...

Let’s sign Bolt bring some pace
I prefer skill myself

That's possibly the best contribution I have read on this debate. It's alright folk screaming for pace but as you say our system, and also how teams set up against us (particularly at the Lane) doesn't necessarily mean any such player would be that effective.
As for who they replace in the squad, then yes they would be warming the bench at most, initially anyway. Madine coming in has seemingly seen off Washington from the match day squad. I expect Clarke would be the next to fall should another attacker come in, even though Wilder likes his all round game.

Whatever your expectations were for this season. We are in this position in the league, so we must give it a go. We desperately need pace up front and in midfield.
