Shrewsbury!! I reckon they'll be straight back down.

As for the blades.... Give it to charity instead of wasting it on the bookies

I genuinely believed i was buying money for a huge piss up complete with bells and whistles on the last game of the season when i backed United with £30 at 6/1 last August..........

To be fair with your track record Brownie you would need several times that to touch the sides :)

if you've got a few quid to invest but you find current ISA rates of 1-2% less than attractive then you might want to consider laying United on the Betfair Exchange. The only market up on there at the moment for next season is for the outright winner of League One. There is £33 wanting to back us at 9.8 (8.8 to 1), £141 at 10 (9 to 1) and £40 at 11 (10 to 1). If you took those bets, it would cost you £1745.40 on my calculation. If we finish top next May, you lose that sum. If we don't you get your money back plus £203.30 profit (winnings of £214.00 less 5% commission). That's a return of 11.64%.

Any takers?

It is very depressing that we are in the same division as that load of shite.
Your right and looking at it the Board would be right to set a target of automatic promotion no excuses

As has been said ad nauseum, odds are not a prediction of what the bookies think will happen, they are calculated to ensure that the bookies make a profit what ever happens and thus depend on how much money is bet on particular outcomes.

SUFC are the best supported team in the 3rd division. Football fans are notoriously optimistic irrational beasts, hence lots of people bet on their own team. It follows that there are probably more bets from United fans than fans of any other club which, almost by default, will make United the favourites - see also England always being amongst the World Cup favourites in England no matter how shit the team is.

Talking of next seasons teams and odds....

The footballing gods are bound to make our last game of the season between us and Wigan with only one of us making automatic promotion.

Not the case on the betting exchanges. Betfair (in this case) are not bookies but act as an intermediary. The people putting up these bets are private individuals and so the odds do to a considerable extent reflect what people "think will happen" next season, opinions they are backing up with hard cash.

As for the more general point, bookies would like to "make a profit whatever happens" but making a book on an event - bookmaking - is fraught with practical difficulties and they are often unable to achieve that outcome. They make their living by achieving it more often than not.

But all setting of odds is based on the opinions of private individuals backed up by hard cash. The issue is whether or not the opinions of said punters are worth anything!

I suspect we'll have a very similar thread to this one from last season.

http://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/why-are-we-pre-season-favourites.35269/

It's nothing more than weight of betting, but ofcourse many on here will believe the hype (again), delude themselves into thinking we have the best squad (again) and rinse and repeat....

Some great comments in that thread, interesting to look at what people were saying a year ago. Just plucked from the first page...

"We have the best squad and manager in this division."

"Luke ayling
Aaron wilbraham
Sam baldock
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
Luke freeman
Wade Elliot
Scott wagstaff
If you believe that the players you mentions are better than that collection of Bristol city players, we clearly see the game in a different way
."

" - Yep, we do. So how about Clough v Cotterill?
- Clough is a much better manager
."

"Whoever finishes above us will win the league. Whoever finishes above Bristol City will too. (See what I did there?)
It's between us and Bristol
."

"Bristol's first XI currently is streets ahead of ours. They have goals from a variety of sources, whereas our top scorer got about 10. Without a striker we are nowhere near their side. Baldock, JET and Freeman would walk into our side."

I'm waiting for us to appoint Adkins before going crazy on betting against us, but could we all at least use oddschecker so it takes into account the best prices?

i.e. for promotion:

Appreciate the politeness of the request but, with respect, my post was specifically about laying United i.e. taking someone else's bet on United in the "winner" market. You won't be able to locate the best price for that on Oddschecker because it doesn't quote them.

Interestingly, and to illustrate my earlier point about the difficulties bookies have in guaranteeing themselves a profit, the three firms quoted in that promotion market on Oddschecker are collectively betting "overbroke". In other words, you could by taking the best odds available and adjusting your stakes depending on the price back every team in the division and guarantee yourself a profit, according to my calculations, of 3.62% on the total staked. Better than those current ISA rates!

More likely United against Wigan with both looking safe from relegation unless Millwall, with Christiano Ronaldo playing, pull off a great escape.

I had a couple of months where I stopped boozing. Decided it wasn't doing me any favours and needed a rest from it

Haven't got a clue but I would consider it as unlikely as space monkeys kidnapping Jim Phipps.
Reuters/ AP: News just in .. Sheffield United head honcho Jim Phipps has been reportedly kidnapped by aliens looking like monkeys. More to follow.. :)

I have no idea what you just said, but if i put 10k on all of that guff, I could make 300?

Do you feel any better for it? I gave up (apart from rare occasional social drink) and didn't notice any difference! Don't miss it though.
