I genuinely believed i was buying money for a huge piss up complete with bells and whistles on the last game of the season when i backed United with £30 at 6/1 last August..........
As has been said ad nauseum, odds are not a prediction of what the bookies think will happen, they are calculated to ensure that the bookies make a profit what ever happens and thus depend on how much money is bet on particular outcomes.
To be fair with your track record Brownie you would need several times that to touch the sides![]()
Not the case on the betting exchanges. Betfair (in this case) are not bookies but act as an intermediary. The people putting up these bets are private individuals and so the odds do to a considerable extent reflect what people "think will happen" next season, opinions they are backing up with hard cash.
As for the more general point, bookies would like to "make a profit whatever happens" but making a book on an event - bookmaking - is fraught with practical difficulties and they are often unable to achieve that outcome. They make their living by achieving it more often than not.
I suspect we'll have a very similar thread to this one from last season.

It's nothing more than weight of betting, but ofcourse many on here will believe the hype (again), delude themselves into thinking we have the best squad (again) and rinse and repeat....
if you've got a few quid to invest but you find current ISA rates of 1-2% less than attractive then you might want to consider laying United on the Betfair Exchange. The only market up on there at the moment for next season is for the outright winner of League One. There is £33 wanting to back us at 9.8 (8.8 to 1), £141 at 10 (9 to 1) and £40 at 11 (10 to 1). If you took those bets, it would cost you £1745.40 on my calculation. If we finish top next May, you lose that sum. If we don't you get your money back plus £203.30 profit (winnings of £214.00 less 5% commission). That's a return of 11.64%.
Any takers?
I'm waiting for us to appoint Adkins before going crazy on betting against us, but could we all at least use oddschecker so it takes into account the best prices?
Talking of next seasons teams and odds....
The footballing gods are bound to make our last game of the season between us and Wigan with only one of us making automatic promotion.

So it would be a semi state of advanced refreshment.
Reuters/ AP: News just in .. Sheffield United head honcho Jim Phipps has been reportedly kidnapped by aliens looking like monkeys. More to follow..Haven't got a clue but I would consider it as unlikely as space monkeys kidnapping Jim Phipps.
I have no idea what you just said, but if i put 10k on all of that guff, I could make 300?Interestingly, and to illustrate my earlier point about the difficulties bookies have in guaranteeing themselves a profit, the three firms quoted in that promotion market on Oddschecker are collectively betting "overbroke". In other words, you could by taking the best odds available and adjusting your stakes depending on the price back every team in the division and guarantee yourself a profit, according to my calculations, of 3.62% on the total staked. Better than those current ISA rates!
Do you feel any better for it? I gave up (apart from rare occasional social drink) and didn't notice any difference! Don't miss it though.I had a couple of months where I stopped boozing. Decided it wasn't doing me any favours and needed a rest from it
