Kyle Naughton

I know where it is. That's why I was surprised someone on his wages would consider living there.

Either the club or Colin Kazim Richards still has an empty house in Woodhouse from when he left the club.

Should just stick Kyle in there...

Naughton to Hull after all. Bugger.

I bet Kyle's really chuffed that he chose such a great club as Spurs to go to. After all, not many clubs would be willing to offer you lots of money to sit on your arse week-in, week-out, and then let you go to play for Orangeman at the mighty Hull for a bit. Still, he's had a good chance to test all those lovely Recaro seats out that 'Arry likes to squirm about on while scowling. Kyle Walker will be really jealous - he's actually had to come back Oop North and play football for a living. No bemch warming for him.

This also tends to shut those up who swore blind that Walker was going to be swapped fror Naughton halfway through the season.

A qucik glance at the last 24 hours worth of google news about kyle reveals only one premier league club after him, and apparently they have to sell before they can even loan players in.

Can't believe naughton would choose any other championship club over us for a loan move

si its shutting myself up then:) it was a serious possibility at one point

Harry Redknap just admitted in his interview that it looks like naughton is off to 'boro today on loan

SV, it is true that Walker's loan was only until January. The extension has been done behind the scenes. The whole "swapping for Naughton" was just 2+2=5.

I thought we had first option on taking any of Spurs players on loan? If Naughton moves to Boro instead of us, this means that either:-

1) We don't really have first option and that story was invented to soften the blow of the Naughton and Walker sale.

2) Blackwell doesn't want to add a proven, quality right back/left back/right wing option to his squad.

3) Sheffield-born Blades fan Naughton would rather head for the bright lights of Middlesborough and play for a more lowly team.

Which ever of these is true, United don't come out of it with any credit.

Or alternatively

4) Boro are willing to cover the entire of Naughtons Wages, you know the wages that we couldnt afford to match when the whole transfer saga started. If we couldnt afford it then, what makes you think we could afford it now?

So us having the first option only applies if Spurs can't get a better deal out of another club? If so, it's not really a great benefit to United then is it?

We can afford the wages of Walker, Bunn, Treacey, Evans, Creswell (and possibly Nosworthy?) who've all come from Premier league clubs. Are you suggesting 21-year old Naughton earns more than all those?

As much fun as it would be to see KN back at the club, we really don't need him.

Walker has been excellent of late. Geary has been solid when called upon. France is an able RB too.

And I'd prefer an out and out left back instead of slotting Kyle in there.

Im not suggesting that he earns more than them at all. What im suggesting if you read my post is that "MAYBE" we arent willing to pay the money that is being asked, or alternatively we are and Boro are willing to pay more. Evans and Creswell are full time signings and yes will be earning more. Walkers agreement was part of the deal so that one doesnt really count. Bunn & Treacey may well be earning more than him, however if we are only contributing 50% towards their wages, and spurs are looking for 75-100% of Naughtons wages, then thats difference. Is it not?

Incidentally what I was told wasn't 2+2=5. We were interested in getting Kyle back, Spurs wanted him to go to a Premiership club.

I took that to mean because the quality would be better, I now think it may be down to their willingness to pay a higher percentage of his wages.

Could be wrong on that last point though, but we were certainly interested but Spurs seem to have knocked it on the head.

I read and understood your post Maq and you may be right. I'm trying to get my head around how we can have "first option on Spurs loan players (but only if no other club offers us a better deal)". If that's the agreement we have with Spurs, then I repeat that it's a worthless option only trumpeted to soften the blow, much like the infamous friendly with Leeds was.

Sorry SB, My Misunderstanding. I take your point, but maybe the "First" option was indeed our, only to be cancelled out by my previous point. That would make sense if it was indeed the case, however like you said, if this was the case then you would have thought that this may have been the understanding in the first place.

However FB may be right that the preference by Harry would be a prem club, which would provide the experience for him against prem opposition. As hes already proved himself against Championship opposition.

Agreed. A loan move to another Premiership club would be preferable from Tottenham and Kyle's point of view and I can fully understand United not being able to compete with that. I'll be gutted if he goes to Middlesborough though and I'm struggling to understand why he would choose them over say Hull.

Dont think Hull can get anyone in until they sell.

And KW thinks Blackie is a complete knob and wont play for him again, hence going to 'Boro.

Lets face it, he's not wrong is he? :)

Alternatively, "first option" may of course mean "first refusal"...

Someone comes in with a loan bid, we have the opportunity to take him instead if the deal suits?

Ok, let's assume we have been offered him on loan and refused to take him. Where are we going to get a better quality left back than him from? Would we rather have Taylor, Stewart or Naughton in the team until the end of the season? That's not even considering his ability to play either right back or right wing should the need arise.

If it's true that we've turned down the chance to take him. I'm very disappointed in United. If it's true that Naughton doesn't want to play for Blackwell. I'm very disappointed in Blackwell. Still struggling to see any positives in this situation from United's point of view.

Perhaps we don't want to pay what has been offered (Boro are splashing the cash wages wise at the moment)...

We also probably don't have a player Harry wants to broker one of his trademark deals for ;)

Last I heard, Kyle was bored senseless at Spurs due to a lack of meaningful football and whilst he's happy down south, he'd love to come back and play. That isn't direct from the horses mouth though.

Confirmed - gone to Boro.

If we seriously were interested in him, and I've no reason to think we weren't given Blackwell's comments, then I can only assume that either:

i) our 'deal' with Spurs to have options to loan players if available is worthless
ii) we can't afford to bring in a full back in addition to a centre back on loan
iii) the rumours that Naughton doesn't want to play for Blackwell are true.

Disappointing. Though if it's no.2 then getting a centre half in is much more of a priority at the minute, and I'm happy enough with Nosworthy.

I've found the original BBC report on our "exciting" deal with Spurs:-

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/s/sheff_utd/8144711.stm

'Walker will return to Bramall Lane on loan as part of the deal with Spurs, and the Blades will also be able to take Tottenham players on loan. Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell said: "Having Walker available is a very important part of our strategy and it's exciting to have the chance to talk with Tottenham and judge whether any other of their players might fit into our squad. If we think that someone could help us we could take them on a short-term loan and if required, extend it to a season-long arrangement after that.'

Clearly, there is nobody at Spurs (including Naughton) who might fit into our squad. What a load of old bull****!

Assuming they sell Hutton today and then their remaining rb gets injured, which Kyle will they recall first??

I've a feeling the conversation was

Blackwell: Can we have Kyle then?

Twitchy: Probably. Didn't realise you were needing a right-back. Is Kyle OK?

Blackwell: I'd say! That's why I want him back

Twitchy: He's injured then? Not bad I hope.

Blackwell: Is he? That's a surprise as I thought he'd hardly played.

Twitchy: Eh? You're not picking him?

Blackwell: I will if I sign him, but if he's injured, I can't do that to the lad.

Twitchy: Fair enough. So do you want Kyle then?

Blackwell: I've got enough injuries, don't need anymore.

Twitchy: [confused] Errr, OK I'll let Gordon have him then, byeee!

I would assume that Boro are indeed paying 100% of his wages and that we could not / were not prepared to do the same.

I am very disappointed, not only that we have failed to sign a very talented player but also that he has gone to one of our play-off rivals.

I was thinking more along the lines of ii) and...

iiii) We don't currently own the registration for Adam Johnson.
