Announces his retirement from football with the regret he wished he’d played for Sheffield United:

” Davies admitted that his only regrets were not playing for his hometown club Sheffield United, where he started his career in the youth teams, and only winning a solitary cap for England.

“One of my biggest regrets is not playing for Sheffield United,” he told talkSPORT.

Would've liked him at the Lane, when at his best. Reyt handful

Wouldn't mind seeing this guy working as a coach or something with the club

Much, much better than Higgo!
In a similar mold though so I know where you're coming from.

Had the pleasure of playing in the same team as him for brunsmeer for a couple of months....I played left wing. Crossing those balls in you knew he'd get on the end of it....could see them he was destined to be a pro. Was very confident and sure of himself....nice kid though I remember. Definitely a blade

Why didn't he play for us then? I'm sure he must have had the opportunity. Certainly if he'd been willing to drop down a division in his early to mid 30's. Not much point regretting it now.

Regret? I'm sure he could have made his dream come true. Take last year, if he or his agent approached the club and said he would play for £500 per week I'm pretty sure we would have done it. Instead he probably went to the highest bidder.

United released him when he was about 16. He said on more than one occasion he'd never play for us after that.

Kevin's dad, Cyril (died in 2005) played for Sheffield Deaf (and many strong local teams such as Birley Amateurs under the management of Derek Dooley) from late 1950s until early 1970s. He is in the photo just behind Derek (This is Your Life in 1961)

Our youth policy under Dave Bassett was very poor and we didnt have good runs in the Youth Cup too. Keith Mincher and John Dungworth were the Youth Team coaches

An understandable reaction from a youngster I'd say, I'm sure it's happened on numerous occasions with young lads released from the club they supported. Looking back at his career, I think it is us that regrets it more than him, always a presence up front. Joins the list of Mendonca, Chris Marsden et al, who went on to have decent careers away from us after being released as youngsters. Sometimes it works out like that. :(

Don't hold that against him.
He was a pro and trying all he could do to win a game of football for the club he plays for. What's wrong with that? Wouldn't expect anything less, regardless of whose shirt he had on.

Its that win win mentality we have needed , and now getting under Adkins.

Yes , Davies has pissed me off , on numerous occasions when he has played against us , but deep down wishing we had him on our side , as a starter or impact player . Over to you Mr Higdon.

UTB

Like the Aussies at cricket yesterday?

I just want the team I support to win, within the rules of the game.

.............................................................................................................It would not be the club that released him,but one individual that got it wrong .

I am sure that, if he really wanted, he could have played his last season or half a season on loan for us.
Zola did something similar for his home town club.

He must have had enough money to retire on by the time he was 30. He could have come to us and said "I'll play for you for scale" if it meant that much to him. I'm sure we'd have bit his hand off.

I do remember him saying in a post match interview, ''we should be beating teams like Sheffield united''
Saying that i would have liked him down at BDTBL. Like any bread winner you look for the job that puts steak on the table and not sausages. ;)

I liked this article better. "My Uncle played for Sheffield United!"

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2003/mar/02/football.features1

Just how many errors are there in that article?

1. Verde signed in 1979, not 1978
2. He wasn't signed with Sabella, Sabella signed the year before
3. Given that he wasn't playing for United then, he didn't play against River Plate in 1978
4. Verde's departure had nothing to do with the Falklands' War, which was in 1982 , not 1981. Verde played a reserve game at the start of 80-81 then disappeared from view, with his contract being cancelled in summer 81.
5. Sabella never played at Halifax
6. The cup in question was the County Cup, not the YHC
7. There was never a County Cup game that attracted 50,000.
8. There is the aprocryphal story abot Verde being told he could keep the CC after United won it in 1980, but it was not "never seen again". It was played for in 1981 and 1982 and on one or two occasions since.

I appreciate it's a humorous article, but the writer appears to know only that Verde played for us around a similar time as Sabella and has just made the rest up!
