At the risk of being all "Darren"... 3rd december, 1977.

It stuck with me because there was no teleprinter that day, don't remember any radio coverage, and I was waiting for the results to be shown in the traditional way on Grandstand as the only way of finding out. As the first division results were being read out, I was imagining a picture of the div 2 results and the announcer reading out ours and had a crazy image of the score "Cardiff City 1 - 6 Sheffield United". I repeated it to myself with my eyes shut... then nearly dropped through the floor when bugger actually appeared exactly like that... Of course, its never happened again, as much as i try....

The Blades scoring 6 goals away from home - it was unheard of. I remember on the Saturday evening Radio Hallam DJ playing Tom Robinson track with the introduction '2 4. 6 United are coming home on the Motorway'.

A great night out in Sheffield that night.

The capacity had been cut due to the building work at the old scoreboard end .

I thought the lower tier of the Stretford End was temporarily closed for a number of games as an punishment for the knife throwing incident in the previous season? That was why Man U played their first two home games of the 1971-72 season at Anfield and Victoria Ground

Is that the most goals we've scored away in the last 40 yrs?

Yes that as well but they were also building another tier on the east side of the ground in those days Old Trafford held around 63,000 I believe the plan was to add more seating behind the east terracing.
PS yep 5500 seats were added along with a roof, work was completed in 1973

That game kicked off at 2pm (cant remember why). My dad wrote to me saying that he thought the match was being kicked off at 3pm so he was wallpapering in my house and switched the radio just after 3pm. He nearly dropped the wallpaper he was holding when the commentator said "Tony Kenworthy has just put United 4up!"

I went on the train to that game got to Newport for 10am then on to Cardiff
Had to keep quiet on the way back to the station but couldnt stop smiling

Really enjoyed reading this thread (despite it starting for a sad reason) - thanks all.

Carl Veart, Andy Scott and Kevin Gage?

Gage 2, Veart 2, Hodges and Scott.

Gage nearly got the most improbable hat trick in United history when, having scored the first two goals to put us 2-0 up, he was put clean through and narrowly shot past the far post. It's on the 94-5 season video.

I know what you mean, but Chris Guthrie has a United hattrick, which is surely even more improbable even though he's a striker!

Gage was great that season. He was basically playing as a wing back before they were invented. He covered so much ground every game.
