It's a gamble considering we let Jairo go. I'd hope Wilder thinks he can get 90 mins out of him rather than just getting 60 out of Jairo.
Yes that's the one reason I can see for not keeping Jairo. Unfortunately we seem to have picked up an even bigger risk factor!

Mate he just needs to get fit with a pre season.... quality player
West Ham, Ipswich and us last season all said the same. At some point you have to accept he hasn’t had a good season since 2021 and the chance of him recapturing that form diminishes every year.

The fact that even the promoted clubs don’t think he’s worth a punt should be a red flag to anyone.

It was a bit bizarre that Jairo couldn't do more than 60mins and it may explain why he was let go by Palace.

The story of his loan at West Ham:

The midfielder joined the club on loan from Manchester City in January 2024 but endured a deeply frustrating stint plagued by form issues and fitness setbacks. [1, 2]

Injury Details
  • The Calf Injury: In May 2024, The London Evening Standard reported that Phillips picked up a calf problem in training after accidentally kicking the sole of a teammate's boot. This injury prematurely ended his season, forcing him to miss West Ham's final matches against Chelsea and Luton Town. [1, 2]
  • Earlier Hamstring Strain: Prior to the calf issue, Phillips also spent about two weeks sidelined in April 2024 due to a hamstring strain tweaked during a training session.

The story of his loan at Ipswich..

His time with the Tractor Boys was heavily disrupted by fitness issues, preventing him from stringing together consistent game time. Manager Kieran McKenna and local reports documented several distinct injury setbacks throughout the year: [1, 2, 3]

Injury Timeline at Ipswich Town
  • September 2024 (Thigh): Just a month into his loan, he missed a match against Southampton due to a minor thigh muscle injury picked up late in training. [1]
  • November 2024 (Ankle): He sidelined himself for three consecutive matches while managing a lingering ankle issue. [1, 2]
  • February 2025 (Calf): During a 4–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Phillips was forced off in the 80th minute with a calf problem, which ruled him out of subsequent matches. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • March 2025 (Foot Laceration): Phillips suffered a severe gash on his foot during a game against Nottingham Forest that required more than 20 stitches, keeping him out of training. [1]
  • May 2025 (Achilles): Toward the end of the campaign, McKenna confirmed that Phillips suffered an Achilles injury that ended his season early. This ultimately required surgery, keeping him out of action until August 2025. [1, 2, 3]
Because of these recurring setbacks, Phillips was restricted to just 14 Premier League starts

The story of his loan Sheffield United ..(part 1)

An injury occurred during a chaotic Steel City derby against Sheffield Wednesday on 22 February 2026. In the 49th minute of that match, Phillips was shown a straight red card for a high boot challenge. During that same "innocuous challenge", he tweaked his knee. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
The details regarding his injury include:
  • The Injury: A knee problem that required a minor "clean-up" surgical operation. [1, 2]
  • The Recovery: He spent time back at his parent club, Manchester City, for initial assessment and treatment before returning to Sheffield United to finish his rehabilitation. [1, 2]
  • Impact on Season: Because the injury coincided with his red-card suspension and subsequent recovery, he was sidelined for the remainder of his loan spell. He ultimately only made three appearances for the Blades during the 2025–26 Championship campaign. [1, 2, 3]

The future is yet to be written but I am sensing a pattern here….

Sadly I'm old enough to remember Dean Hammond
With all that’s unfolded since, it’s easy to forget that DH signing was a big deal, and caused a bit of excitement. I remember being at his debut ( night match?) and texting my mate in the opposite stand ‘ he’s fucking shit’ after 30 minutes from where on he got even worse.

I think he will do well with us this season. Needs game time. However unlike quite a few on here, im hoping he does very well (some sad sacks would love it to go wrong just ao that they could say 'i was right') and im happy to see how it plays out if he signs. He isnt coming here for the money United are offering, thats for sure. Time for his career to have a big upturn, with SUFC. Fingers crossed anyway.

IF he signs, we need him to do well and have a great season, but the evidence of recent years is stacked against it

We're already gambling on Wilder rediscovering his mojo. Both happening at once is unlikely.

Personally, I'd like our recruitment team and manager to find players without that evidence

I know that's all a bit 'out there' but just my thoughts

If we had heard he's signing for a top championship club some on here would be moaning why can't we get players like this, typical united.
I genuinely can’t imagine any top championship club going in for him after the evidence of his last 3 loans. But I really hope he’s a success if we do sign him.

Pre-season or no pre-season, he’s toilet, I’d have thought the past three years (one of those literally in front of our eyes) would’ve shown that.. but hey, it’s not my brass we’re throwing down the shitter 🤷

I'm not sure I understand the antipathy towards this signing if it comes off from a lot of fans.

If we were spending a transfer fee on him then fair enough. Hell I'm not sure even the most hardened Wilder fanatic could defend Cannon for £10m, Brewster for £23m etc etc.

However on a season long loan where we will probably be paying an absolute fraction of his wages then I genuinely don't see what the issue is unless anyone on here has an in depth knowledge of our budget for the season and can prove that signing KP on loan took up budget that could supposedly have been spent better elsewhere.

Not from a lot of fans mate. Just a few jumped up know-nowts on here, who can't stand the thought that the recruitment of any sort of quality may lead to Wilder staying put longer than they'd like him to. "Sod the club, sod the team, we just want Wilder out and if that means we have to keep losing every week, so be it."

Meanwhile, back in the real world, away from this place, Blades are very much hoping we can get him to sign.

Just seen on bbc gossip we are in advanced talks for him.

Wilder never learns does he.

Tbh after parting ways with Jairo KP should have been through the door when the window opened.

I’m not spending all summer hitting refresh to see if he’s signed and heralded as the marquee signing meanwhile we’ve all been distracted from the fact no other signings have been made.

I have 0 faith any signings will be in place by our first pre-season game and before anyone sites other clubs I’m not bothered about them I’m bothered about us getting it right early to give ourselves a great chance going in to the season.

Why?
City still paying his wages over the summer.
Blades don’t waste extra cash.
Window not open, yet.
🤷‍♂️
