Apologies, my mistake, it was the 1 off payment of £80, it used to cost you the retention fee everytime didn't it, now it's just the once and that allows you to put it on a vehicle too, then it's £80 Next time you retain. Sorry, I've got 3 on retention and my original and the missus are on our cars, but I'm sure 2 of the ones I bought new, unregistered, allow for life unless they're fitted to a vehicle??
Now I'm confused so I'm going to check tomorrow !

Nice of you to join the thread 👍

It is my undisguised pleasure Sir and thank you for having me.

This number plate malarkey...methinks you've got it bad?

The plates you posted would not convey "Blades" to most people - as I think you've seen from the responses already. I'm not against private number plates, but I think when people try and shoe-horn the numbers and letters on a number plate, to mean something that no one on earth would possibly think of, were it not for a bit of manipulation of the spacing or letter style, then it becomes rather contrived and loses its value.

It's very common though. It obviously means a hell of a lot to some folks to shift the spacing of the letters (which is still illegal I believe?) or to put a fat headed screw in the plate to make the numbers of letters look slightly different - (e.g. a "C" can be made to look more like a "G" if you put the screw in the right place). That's also illegal.

But apart from the legal aspects, what on earth possesses people to do it? To me, it's often driven by vanity and it says that the person is seeking attention and validation.

I saw a nice green roller the other day, that's a Rolls Royce btw, not a paint roller. It had the number plate, "BO55 ....". The guy obviously wanted people to know he was the boss of some firm - as if the Rolls Royce itself wasn't a bit of a clue as to his lifestyle?

I saw this number plate on a Black Range Rover Sport at Costco - a few years ago...

CM05 HEA

Nowt wrong with that is there? Except, it wasn't spaced like that, it was spaced like this...

CM 0 5HEA

And who was driving it? A central midfielder called O'Shea, that some of you may remember. To which I think... hmm! that's both clever and very, very sad.

Occasionally I see a number plate that I think is quite clever. There's a Porsche 911 that I've seen around Sheffield a few times, it's the most brilliant blue colour, like, really shockingly stand out blue, and the number plate is "2 BLU". Which made me smile. I quite liked that because it was self-effacing to some extent.

I think football plates are pretty naff tbh. There are so many football teams with "UTD" that it becomes meaningless. And "UTB" is something that is probably only associated with the Blades here in Sheffield. I think if it's obvious what the plate refers to then fair enough, but the more contrived it gets, the sadder it gets imo.

But...each to their own. I think Viz summed it up nicely for me, when a bloke wrote

"Instead of spending money on expensive personal number plates, why not save money by just changing your name by deed poll, to the registration of your car".

Now: Is anyone interested in buying this plate from me?

ND6 NHM

It's the original number plate owned by Ernest Nudger Needham. I'm asking just £40,000 for it. 😉

Paul Raymond owned FU2 and sold it to Billy Smarts family.

B1 ADE on a Ferrari, don’t ask me how I know. Oh, go on then I will tell you. It’s mine.

That's worse than a holiday boast!

How yer finding it anyway, driving a Ferrari around the pot-holed roads of Sheffield? I bet it's similar to skateboarding down a cobbled street? Have you ragged off yer front splitter yet? for example.

Tell you what mate, I'm envious, even if no one else is. It must be fantastic to be able to get behind the wheel of something like that. I do think it must also be very limited as to what you can do, where you can go, but most folks I know that can afford to run such a car also have other cars that they use for more practical purposes.

I run 3 cars, none of them a Ferrari. I've got a big one, a medium sized one and a very small one. This gives me a lot of flexibility depending on what I'm doing. Whether it's fetching stuff from the garden centre, taking stuff to the tip, going for a leisurely drive in the countryside or nipping in and out of town. I always take the small car when I go to the Hallamshire Hospital for example. It's so easy to park. In fact, during this lockdown, I've been almost exclusively driving the small car. It will do almost 60 mpg and costs about £35 a month to fill it up.

I've been wondering of late, whether to ditch the big 4x4? In some ways it's made me realise that I'm just throwing money away, driving it, but I do like that car for long motorway journeys as it's very comfortable and eats up the miles, meaning I arrive at my destination still fresh and stress free. I'm also happier for my family to be in it when they are travelling any sort of distance. That's about safety. So I'll probably stay with it, or even replace it with something similar. Which, is o.k. but sometimes I do yearn to drive something with a bit of sportiness to it.

A Ferrari would be nice. But maybe only for weekends - just for taking stuff to the tip and back. You can get a trailer hitch on them can't you?🤔

No, but come to think of it, I definitely remember seeing a Ferrari with the number plate "B1 ADE" as you describe. But it never occurred to me that this was a Sheffield United fan. I just thought it was a bisexual bloke with the name Adrian. 😉

Surely 'LIKE Sheffield United ,come FILL me again ?'
Think time and mispronunciation follows me around....🤔
I told them and they've changed it. They only want a tenner for em. Will look good in my new bar

When i bought mine one of the others on sale was D B14DES they wanted £1400 😲

Rob Kozluk used to have RK 02 LUK

I’m pretty sure his wife was called Karen and she had KK 02 LUK.

The most outrageous personalised plate I know of is in Stoke, owned by a bloke whose company is/was called Duckpaddle. He bought the plate D1JCK and the only way it really looked like DUCK was by putting a short 1 on the hook of the J. He was a bit of a dick and that’s closer to what the undoctored plate looked like.
