I can only see Nigel Clough being named as our new manager. This is simply down to the amount of time it is taking to name the new boss. Any other manager out of work would be signed and sealed by now but because NC has compo to settle i am guessing he is in talks with Derby to try and get a settlement figure so he can put all that to bed before he starts a new challenge. If it is to be a manager currently in work the press tend to report on it first like with Karl Robinson i know they got that wrong but we have to ask the club for permission to speak to them first, again the press will be notified at the same time.

I'd like to know anyone else's thoughts on why it is taking so long if it is to be someone but NC.

(i am that confident, i am even referring to him by his initials in true forum style ;))

Because we panicked and fired Weir before the chance of a shoes off protest in the car park again to embarrass our very proud leaders. Now were manager less and are running around frantically trying to find a manager....

Or maybe Clough is the man as you say :)

It's quite possible they wanted the weekend's game out of the way if they are dealing with a 'working' manager but as you say, looks like they're just waiting on Clough to sort out his differences with Derby. Presuming he's not contractually tied to Derby in any way, I don't see why this is an issue.

I'm still not convinced Clough is the man based on the little titbits JP is throwing into the mix but everything else would seem to point to him.

Whoever comes in will only be here for 10 games, so lets not worry about it too much :)

Or maybe they've just forgot? Maybe they were so overcome with delight after winning our first match in 13 years and just so busy tweeting about it and the new, all singing - all dancing assistant that they actually forgot that they should be appointing a manager? Maybe they've had an 'Oh shit...!' moment already and are busy trawling Amazon and the LMA website as I type, looking for a suitable replacement. One would hope that's the case.

How many times did you watch David Weirs Sheffield United to be able to say we panicked in sacking him?

Sorry Swiss, Weir was too idealistic, inflexible and arrogant - traits which don't make a very good manager.
I thought the board gave him as much support as they could given the dire circumstances of his tenure -
He wasn't just sacked after ten games - he was sacked after a full pre season, ten league games and three cup games - we won just one of those games 2-1 v a ten man Notts County and yes we have now won again against a ten man Port Vale !
Weir has a lot to learn about life, communication and man management before he even has a chance of success - another ten games of Weirs influence and we would have been as good as relegated.

If Clough is the right man he will be worth the short wait - Morgan is certainly not the right man but good luck while he keeps the managers seat warm UTB

I suspect Derby will be able to reduce any compo by an amount equal to any earnings received by NC in the compo period (length of previous contract).

No doubt this rule will apply to backroom staff as well.

I am not an employment lawyer but this would make sense, and probably explains why a few high profile managers have not reappeared in new jobs since getting the sack.

Mcleish
ONeill
Keane
Kean

It is a difficult choice;

Sit back and let the pay roll in while on two years garden leave. A chance to do all those things you wanted to do but work just got in the way.

Sign a new contract with SU for less pay, which effectively you would get for doing nothing if you didn't. Oh, and then there is the job........gulp.

Presumably the compensation Derby have to sort isn't just for him, but also the rest of his backroom team - aren't there about 4 people?

That's the other thing that doesn't seem to add up - Adam Owen (Assistant Manager - 'Performance') remains on staff apparently, and Phipps says Morgan is 'definitely a big part of the club's future' - won't Clough want the team he's worked with to date?

It will be Clough. The circumstances seem to indicate that it will be anyway. He was also spotted scouting next Saturday's opposition. I don't know why the supporters are speculating about anyone else it looks nailed on.

There are a number of reasons why it could be taking a while to appoint anyone, nobody knows the individual circumstances of strangers but I keep putting 2 and 2 together regarding United and Clough.....4 is the only answer I'm getting.

I would be completely shocked if it's not him.

Not going much this year Swiss?

Looks like the deal has been done. Reading between the lines we will get an official announcement tomorrow.

So much for making an appointment that "shows we mean business" or however it was worded.

You're missing the point I was making. The panic point relates yet again to sacking a manager without having a replacement ready to jump in....

I bow down to your bigger blade status though.

Didn't realise I had to watch every game to believe that 10 games isn't much time. Not even 1/4 of a season.

How long does the next guy get? 1 month? 1 week?

heh.. calm down mate. he probably hasn't read your current location status :D

I know that he used to come back for more games. I am pretty sure that everyone who has watched United this year saw things getting worse under Weir. It wasn't even as though we were seeing hot 20 minute spells in every game. The comments from Swiss on Weir are becoming a bit like mine on Doyle and Pinchy on tippy tappy

If you had seen United under Weir then you have understood why it was absolutely right to sack him

do we all really think its Clough???? We know the deal has been done but who is it? Could it actually be someone else? Boro are supposedly in for Clough now......

How many games should I have seen?

You don't seem as connected with United this season if you don't mind me saying Swiss. I think you came over for the Bradford game? I can say with all honesty it has never been as bad as it was, I would probably even have taken Heath back. It was a miserable failure and I would be with you in giving Weir chance if he ever did anything to change what was happening or we were havving golden spells and missing chances. He didn't and we were not.

He was a beaten man and I personally think if he had his time over again he would bring different people with him. There was something seriously wrong with how the players interacted and were totally avoid of taking any initiative.

I'm not posting as much on here because of the time differences but keeping in contact and up until signing marlon king I was waking up at 3-4am to listen to midweek games, and late night for sat games. not every game but a few. Being someone who's worked away for the last ten years I've spent a lot of time judging games and performances based on what I hear/ read and watch on highlights and connecting it with what i see when i go to games. Obviously I can't comment on individual performances but I'm also picking up things from several on here who's opinions I trust.

The absurd suggestion that I'm not allowed an opinion is just daft. I'm perhaps detached from things in some ways but it perhaps also gives a more objective view.

The view I expressed on here was that we fired a man after less than a quarter of a season. Fair enough it's a results business. But I've said it many times before. If you're going to sack the man, you've got to have a better man ready to hit the ground running. When was the last time we did this? Wilson or Blackwell perhaps.

Sack weir on a Friday or sack him after the cov game, but have the new man in on Monday.

Right now were sat more than a week into his sacking and we'll have a bunch of players being guided by weir, carsley, Morgs, Wadsworth, the new man, his coach.

This club will never get stability like this. We're bloody awful at employing managers, but by god were shite at firing !
