He came on against us late in the season too and was their second most dangerous player.... just behind my top target Che.
 

Quality player and his consistency problems could quite easily by coached out of him by CW and Co.

I'd like him but I can image that he does go missing at times. Ricky has also worried me now saying that he might not be athletic enough because the Premiership does seem to be full of them.

He wouldn't go missing with Wilder on his case, we've got a few that went missing with past managers, but Wilder soon knocked them into shape
 
I worry if he's good enough off the ball in a pressing system. Does he have the athleticism and work rate?.

Good point, but if he didn’t have faults and flaws, he would immediately be out of our price range. This is the fascinating recruitment issue we have. Can we find ability and turn them into athletes (Jota, Dack, Freeman?) or find athleticism and increase their ability (Phillips?)

That is exactly the dilemma.
Coadys don't come around often.
When they do they tend to already be at a big club ie Mount, Abraham, Wilson etc

I think realistically without a major foreign backer and club going up has to look at players that may perform in the prem but can also easily adapt to the championship if the stay is a short one.

Agreed. And even though it’s far from a simple straight line comparison. We’ve achieved promotion through a similar model in the championship. We’re not fighting for the title, or champions league qualification. We’re basically in a mini league of 7 teams. I would optimistically hope we can compete by smart championship/lower prem recruitment, with half an eye on contingency if we go back down.
 
The 'how would he do for us' thought has to be central with any potential signing. We can't really buy players who guarantee anything at PL level, not if we're to bring in the required numbers. Getting the best out of players isn't a problem for us. That opens up a lot of options who might not look too impressive on paper.

As for Jota, is he good enough to do either of the roles we'd need him to?

Duffy role - does he have the same magnetic ability, strength and ball retention to play there?

Wide attack role - does he have the athleticism to break into goalscoring positions and does he have enough goals in his game?

I'll answer this as a wider point. I fully appreciate that CW & AK, are the experts and have got us into the premier league, and they know what they have done, are currently doing an will do, and mine is just uninformed alehouse opinion, but I believe that we will have to adjust our formation next season and be more pragmatic, certainly away from home. Or we might not. That's two positions.

If it's the first one, I think that we'll play a 3-1-4-1-1, sacrificing the 2nd striker and the Duffy role, for a hole player & a defensive midfield screen. In this situation the two critical positions are the lone forward who has to be a Che Adams type player and the midfield screen who has to be a Drinkwater type. That's not to say that it either of those players, just that it is their type of player. Because the required quality of those two positions dictate that they are PL experienced or at least have sparkled in the champ and look like they can make the leap, it would make sense that we loan them in from the PL. The role of the hole player can then be filled for next season by McG in a Zlatan-esque role or Duffy from the bench for the last 15 to 20 mins if games. In this situation I don't see a need to pay circa £6m for Jota.

If its the second situation, and CW believes that we can go out next season and mirror this season's formation and approach, then the two crucial roles are the 1st line striker and the Duffy role. Again the required quality would dictate that they are both loaned in from PL clubs, and again I see no reason in spending £6m for Jota.

If I were offered Jota for £3m and he was brought in to replace Duffy as 2nd choice; I'd be ok with it, that's where I see his level.

Jota at £6 million would be a good buy we can loan players but we also need continuity if the worse happens and we go back down.
Not suggesting we will but Jota is a real talent and a good one to build a team around or if he was sold on we would probably make a profit on a deal.
Our tactics are being refined gradually as the quality of our squad gets better , not saying we will ditch the overlapping centre backs but it is evolving as we go and I'm sure Wilder will make some little changes to what we do.
As we have moved through the divisions our defence has improved more than any other area without losing any attacking flair this has to continue and the new recruited will be vital for this to continue at the top table.
In Wilder we trust !!

I agree with the majority of that. In either scenario we need to try and find that ‘something from nothing’ player. Che Adams for me. Drinkwater is a good shout, although I think he’s had some bother recently. I actually think both of your suggested systems could be deployed. I’d hope we don’t completely ditch our DNA, with a slightly higher level squad, I’m convinced it could work to some degree. At its core it’s about overloading areas and seemingly have more players on the pitch in wide areas as the opposition struggle to chase shadows.

It’s not that dissimilar to the prime Barcelona system deployed in the middle of the park.

Those pieces seem to have originated from a James Shield piece in the Star published yesterday. If you read Shield's piece, he just talks of "links" to Jota (his inside knowledge is our interest in McBurnie and Maupay), which I took to mean previous links. So I don't think there's anything new here.

Fine by me. The sooner Champ sides and the like know that even with Prem cash we're not going to pay over the odds, then great.
