Remember this guy?

Not so much as a substitute appearance for Blackburn so far this season. Great move on his part :S

Didn't he join their "development squad" when he was signed? Don't think they expected him to figure much, if at all, this season.

He's playing for the reserves, not the Academy. Made 5 appearances scored 0 goals....

One outward transfer that never troubled me in the least. It's not automatically a bad thing to sell an academy product.

Why? Are Blackburn selling him to a league 1 club next year?

Flippin so funny that. Hate to spend Christmas with you bet you cannot wait to tell your wife (or mother) the dinner didn't turn out right.

No problem with selling him for the money and when we did. He didn't look all that when I saw him however, the principle of selling all your acadamy players, all the time is one that sets the mould at BDTBL. We sell the family silver on every occasion. Did we get good deals for the Kyles? Not sure seeing how good Kyle Walker is that we did actually. Are we going to sell George Long for £3m to Man U/Arsenal? If we do is it the right thing for us? Problem is as I see it the acadamy is now there to finance the club. When it was built it was supposed to be a conveyor belt of talent for the first team. Theres a massive difference.

The academy was built to be a conveyor belt, but with our drop through to the third tier we've obviously had to adapt accordingly. Any other team (below the Championship anyway) rely on their youngsters to run as a football club, and unfortunately we're no different until we can get back into the second tier and above.

It's easy for people to say 'we can't sell the youngsters', and 'get rid of the ones on high wages instead' etc. but when we're only getting offered money for the prospects it's the only option we have. If we sold Long for £3m after 3 league appearances for the first team and used a third of that money to bring in 2 or 3 decent signings in January to bolster the squad and help the promotion bid this season, it's good business. I said at the time of sale that Slew was good business, I never rated him that much.

We made a mistake with Kyle Walker in particular, but you can't get every transfer right.

Dont take this personally Daz but I'm off on one here. Look at the above statement. If we sold for £3m. All good so far. When was the last time we did the second part of that? And that is my point. We sell, but we never replace. So yes, Long going for £3m would look on the outside to be good idea, but if you don't spend the money to replace theres just a hole where a player used to be.

There's nowt to say he would have developed into quite the player he has if he had stayed with us. He would still have been brilliant, but I'm sure that the quality of coaching he gets at Spurs will have brought the potential through to a greater degree than if he was still here.

Not taken personally at all mate :)

That's the trouble, we haven't done it in the past. I'm hoping now the board will learn from past mistakes and realise that we'd have to re-invest at least some of that money into the first team if we're to get promoted at the first time of asking. I don't think Long leaving would create that much of a 'hole' in the squad because I believe we'll be in the market for another keeper in January regardless, but if we were to sell the likes of Lowton then that would be a hole they'd have to fill immediately as we have nothing else at right back.

Completely agree with that. The coaching and experience he's gained at Villa and Spurs has helped him develop massively. I just felt at the time that it was a bit of a hasty decision to sell on our part.

We got a good deal for Naughton, but I reckon we could have held out for a bit more for Walker as I always felt he was the better player out of the two.

Regretting it? On that kind of money. Success is money for footballers now. Stayed with us got injured out of a job in 3 years.
I think he is happy.

No a million for him was good business :-)

yes a very very very very good bit of business by the club

He went for the money. We will never hear of him again.

So because he hasn't made the first team for Blackburn yet his career is over and it was a very good deal for United?
How many 19 year old strikers are there currently playing in The Premiership. It would be more of a surprise if he'd made the breakthrough already.
The question is, would he have been an improvement or a good alternative to our current batch of strikers or not?
Would he have scored more goals in 15 starts than Creswell's 4 goals? Would he have bettered Clarke's total of 1 goal in 5 starts?
Would he have offered more pace and skill than Porter? Would he have been fit and available for more matches than Beattie?
It will only have been a very good deal for United if Slew spends the rest of his career playing below League One level and never moves for more than £1M.
Let's reassess the situation in a few years time shall we?

Sell Long for £3m? Does anyone seriously need to think twice?

Taxi....

Not quite sure why this comment is on the Jordan Slew thread...?
However, if we do get an offer of more than £1M for Long does that not make the £1M we got for Slew a bad deal?
Strikers traditionally cost more than goalies. Slew made more appearances and was more successful at first team level than Long.

Oh, we invested all the Kyle Walker money into the first team. We gave them to Monty and Cressy.

I don't think anyone argues that you can/should always hold on to all your young players no matter the offer but where it has all gone wrong at United is timing.

We have been selling our youngsters after a few first team games and that is killing the club.

It sends out the signal to the fans that it's pointless to produce a great, exciting young talent, who you love to watch, because he'll be gone before you can say Billy McEwan's wilderness years.

As a club we are skint and will always be relatively skint compared to many, we can't buy talent, so if we can't hold on to our youngsters for 5 minutes, then the club becomes a bit pointless and the heart starts to go cos we'll never achieve anything.

And every Academy prospect sees his immediate (not medium term future) away from the Lane - as soon as he gets in the the first team (if he's genuinely good or rated) - not after a coupe of seasons or so.

The really sad thing is when I think how much enjoyment and success the Kyles could have brought to United and when I think how much money has gone out of the club on the likes of Horsfield, Ade etc (the list is long) and huge loan wages like Hendrie etc (the list is long) the Kyles money was nothing compared to the money we've wasted.
