April 21, 2007. Monty, Hulse and Jags. 1-1 at Charlton and just 3 games left. We thought we were safe... What a fucking season that was, starting with a penalty for fucking Gerrard in the first game because Morgan threw him a dirty look, through to Del Geary having a perfectly good goal not given at West Ham and Tevez/Wigan on the very last day. Less than a month before the Charlton game the real damage was done when Stead's strike partner - Rob Hulse - was injured (Mar. 17, 2007) and didn't play again 22nd December 2007.

Hulse got 8 PL goals that season and Stead got 5. (and, just to prove this record-keeping lark ain't as easy as it seems, the Denis Clarebrough book (page 503) has Hulse down as only scoring 2 and Hulse a bit fat blank.)

I think it was Kozzy that had his goal disallowed.
Would have been his only goal for us.

Quoting myself (apologies), but only to ask if anyone has a better memrie of that goal than I do. Who was it against ??

I think it was against West Ham in a 3-0 win when we really thought we were safe. Didn't he pick the ball up near the touchline run infield, across their defence, and then slot it in the bottom corner from 25 yards, if I remember correctly.

Kozzy scored at home to Donny too in his second spell

Sure kozluk scored three goals.

A bobbler of a daisy cutter away at Grimsby 02/03, a narrow angled finish away at Stoke 03/04 and then in 2011.

But it was Derek Geary who got clattered by Robert Green at Upton Park, ref obviously thought that the 5ft 6" Geary getting punched in the head was the reason Green completely mis-judged the cross.

Jesus, ten years on and some of the decisions made by refs/authorities that season make me not want United up there at all.

Deffo scored at Grimsby. 2003? From outside the area I seem to recall.

He copped for a yellow card at Grimsby, he took his shirt off after he scored, it was under floodlights. I remember 'Brownie' taking the piss out of him on the radio, he said "He was whiter than Caspar the Ghost !!".

Didn't Green collide with his own defender ? Geary then slotted the ball into the empty net only for the ref to give a foul !

You really couldn't make half the stuff up that's happened to us over the years

Definitely the one ShockingBadBuy is thinking of.

I fucking loved Jon Stead. One of my favourite United players. An equal injustice for him is that his next manager was Bryan Robson.

Yes, Bath, you are dead right. It was just as you said. I was in the South Stand that day almost in line with the shot. It seemed to curve in

to the far bottom corner at the last moment. West Ham were pathetic that day and we really thought we were on the way to safety.

Good interview, and a top bloke to boot. Always liked him when he was at United, and as others have said, his equaliser on that fateful day against Wigan is one of the bravest goals I've ever seen. No thought for himself, just 100% determination to get the team back in it.

I hope he finds somewhere abroad willing to give him a last decent pay day.

I can recall this different angle of the Steadinho celebration being described by cooperblade a Stead and the Holy Trinity. One of the top goal celebrations I've experienced in an away game – great moment, wish it had counted for more.

Stead's right in that several of that team might have had very different careers with a longer spell in the Premier League. Most of that squad probably would have been retained as was – certainly those in this shot.

Them shirts were shit.

Tonge belted a free kick in as well that day. Great game.

I've never forgotten how stead put his head in, almost got it took off, after that I've never doubted him.... a decent pro and suffered with is all by the look of it..

That goal against West Ham at the lane, absolute classic

I really liked Stead. No one expected much when he signed but he had a cracking debut at the Lane and the crowd immediately warmed to him. He then started to flourish in a partnership with Hulse. That partnership was going places, they looked great together with Hulse acting as the senior and constantly in Steads ear.

I remember Stead scoring against Fulham (I think) and he was going mad celebrating till Hulse grabbed him and said something in his ear. Stead then stopped celebrating and jogged back to halfway with a purposeful look. I loved it.

Many people also forget that in the Wigan game just after Stead equalised, he had a great chance on the volley. I am convinced that if he had not just nearly had his head taken off by the keeper when he scored and wasn't still disorientated, he would have buried the second chance.
Those two looked unplayable that day. I was buying a Deano t-shirt from Cult Zeroes around that time. The bloke from the site was a Fulham fan. He said he remembered Deano giving them a torrid time (old third division I presume) and then emailed me again after that game. He'd come up for it and said no front pair had given them such a run around in a long long time.
