Don't forget lundstram won't just have missed out on the extra wages but the players were paid bonuses that apparently doubled their salary for promotion and then last season too

You think that McBurnie’s 20k a week, presumably offered the wage because he was expected to be a starting centre-forward, won’t be more than what we’ll have offered back-up midfielder Lundstram? He’ll have probably been offered something nearer Osborn’s wage, not McBurnie’s. And, based on what their role is likely to be for the next season, rightly so.
McBurnie signed for us as a newly promoted PL side. Lunny’s contract was offered as we were pretty much guaranteed another season the division and a very impressive personal season for him as a first teamer. Will have been 20k.

From The Star

On Lundstram, Wilder said: “I’ve made it clear about John and the situation. I’d love him to sign a new contract, and you never know, he might.

“It’s a bit of a waiting game, to be honest. But there’s no downside to him putting it all anyway. He sees his immediate future here and he’ll get my backing so I hope he gets backing from everyone else as well.”

Seems reasonable enough to me. Some might need to cancel their pitchfork party at the prospect he might be staying for the full season.

I’m new here so will choose my words carefully but what a load of bollox. He hasn’t alienated his manager. Wilder just the other day said he has no issues with Lunny. I guarantee he will play a big part this season and I for one am delighted he is staying. He has all the attributes we need in the Prem, pace and power, and we don’t have the budget to guarantee replacing 5 goals/4assists from Midfield having missed a number of games. If he goes at the end of the season and banks a couple of mill Signing on fee then best of luck to him. He didn’t get much of a look in in Champ didn’t sulk, head down and was one of our strongest looking players on and off the ball last season...but of course because the bloke probably wants a deal at similar level to other top earners at club we cut our nose to spite our face call him a tosser, don’t support him and then lose his goals/assists and get no money....only one party starting to look like idiots and it ain’t Lunny

I agree he has those attributes, but he doesn't show them when he has the ball. His biggest issue, for me, is his inability to progress with the ball. In our system, having sacked off a number ten, we're only going to be creating chances if our RCM and LCM are ball carriers able to create. Fleck is, Lundstram isn't. Or hasn't been anyway. It's great that he gets on the end of crosses and hassles and harries people, but if the team wants to move forward he will be a squad player at best for us unless he starts pulling to together. Berge actually shows more promise as a ball carrier than Lundstram.

It’s simple really he has to play well to get backed by the fans. If he perform like he did at the start of last season, fans won’t complain and he will probably play himself into a big contract elsewhere for the wages he wants.

But it would be foolish to assume some fans won’t be quick to judge him if his form drops off like it did last season. He is going to get some stick if results go against us, that’s just the way of things tbh when you for what ever reason dont want to commit to the club. It’s the risk he is willing to take, and he could quite easily play himself out of a better contract offer elsewhere in reality.

It is too late...

Wilder must really rate and love Lunny. Always thought if anyone was messing the club around then they'd be outta the door..

Or maybe this whole thing was never about money? Anyone considered that it could be another part of his contract he’s not happy with? Maybe he wants a more guaranteed playing role, perhaps he’s even just not happy with the length of contract offered and he wants more/less. Everyone has been touting that he’s demanding more money but nowhere has that actually been said. I feel like if it was down to money wilder wouldn’t be standing for it and still hoping he signs. Whatever Lundstram’s issue is it’s clearly not one wilder is upset with or he’d be out on his arse ala Duffy.

Think it’s Knilly who rates him so highly, I remember hearing he spent a lot of time getting him ready for last season tactically and physically. If that’s true it just shows how much Wilder rates Knilly’s opinion.

The real issues regards Lundstram are

Factor 1:
It’s so difficult to judge his actual ability and his value to SUFC.
Lundstram has caused confusion because he’s been so underwhelming most of his spell at SU.
Remember....after watching him perform in the Championship....most Blades judged that he wasn’t quite good enough for that level.
We were all pretty confident he’d struggle at PL level and be offloaded back to league 1.....however credit to the player....he had a brilliant 3 month spell.
However let’s not forget his best displays were coming on as sub..when ever he started he was very average.
Also let’s not forget after lockdown his form dipped and maybe that‘s his real level.

Lundstram’s agent is probably trying to negotiate a contract based on his 3 month great form before Xmas.
Wilder’s arguement will be....he was only impressive for 3 months..so maybe that was a purple patch never to be repeated again.
Wilder will want to see more longevity of being a big asset to SU before dishing out rewards.

Factor 2:
Theres such a massive gap in salaries between average PL players and average Championship players.
So if we judge Lundstram on 85% of his SU career he’s probably worth £5 to £10K a week max.
If we judge Lundtram on 15% of his career he’s probably worth £30K....although that might be too high because he rarely performed as well when starting.

There‘s another factor that actually defends Lunny and also Duffy.
They’ve both generally been lower division players...so won’t have made massive amounts from the game.
The rewards in the PL are massive so I can understand both players wanting to strike (financially secure their futures) whilst the iron is hot.
So I don‘t bear any malice towards them and think these digs of him being greedy etc are unfair.

Probably depends how the "messing around" is done.
If new contracts are being negotiated I doubt that it's along the lines of 'take it or leave it'

A few on here have said the Lundstram would be expensive to replace. He’s already been replaced.
If Berge is Norwoods replacement, and Norwood seems likely to be around for a few seasons yet, then Berge becomes Lundstrams replacement in the short/medium term. Berge is also getting better and more consistent in that role, producing better attacking stats.
Lundstrams form has dipped post lockdown, so he needs to prove himself again, like he did from pre season last year.
Lundstram seems to believe he has proved himself to be EPL standard. He is nowhere near that yet.
Buckle down, work hard and don’t complain. Oh look. I worked hard and got a new contract offer, based on reality!

Totally agree with this.
Wilder is probably laughing about the state of the game....rewards shouldn’t be based on performances over 10 matches.
Rewards should be based over a full season or two.

I suppose Lundtram might be thinking he’ll never dislodge Norwood, Berge or Fleck....so won’t get many starting opportunites.
However he’s not himself any favours because although he’s been great/ impressive as sub.....he’s been ordinary/ average every time he’s started matches.

We’re only going to get performances out of Lundstram until Jan , his form will drop once he’s signed a pre contract agreement in Jan

But made himself look a twat in doing so because he’s had nobody willing to pay a fee for him. Know your worth, if it wasn’t for Chris he’d still be swimming around L1 and at the very most the Championship.

If his main driver is money then he might be better served waiting to leave on a free. The club is more likely to give him a bigger salary if theres no transfer fee involved. To him it's better the money be in his pocket than the club's.

That Bogle chap could play RMF anyway , so Lunny's got Berge ahead of him + Bogle who can really run with the ball.
If Bogle does sign , I can't see how Lunny will get game time unless both Norwood & Berge are absent.

See above
Sorry I fucked up my reply there.

If Bogle comes in and either Norwood or Berge are absent , I could see him playing RCM with George at RWB.
Bogle must be able to tackle since he's played RWB and he loves to get forward carrying the ball , so he looks capable of being a box to box RMF.
I think CW has responded to what we've all seen - Lunny doesn't often carry the ball forward.
Whether Berge +/or Bogle can score Lunny's goals by getting themselves into the box is another matter.

Your first line said it all. Your new on here but what a load of bollox??!! Not very well chosen words.
Wilder gave him a chance last season & he did well, really well in fact up to xmas.
Then he got the contract offer, started playing Billy big bollocks & his form dipped.
No coincidence that he’s got the same agent as Duffy.
Knowing how Wilder works he no doubt wants to keep him as part of the squad but I very much doubt the contract offer is still on the table.
It speaks volumes that Sharp,Didzy,Norwood,Egan,Stevens,Baldock,Basham etc have all signed new contracts but Lundstram wont. He’s not got the Blades in his blood like the rest of our squad.
He’ll end up at Rangers or in the Championship with some team like Reading or QPR. Then he’ll wished he’d signed the contract with us.

Totally agree with this.

And I don't think we're exactly being overwhelmed with rumours of him being tracked by this club or that club. Not even Villa seem to be in for him ;)

Maybe Wilder knows he can't get him to sign so has listed him. Better to get £10m now rather than £0 next summer.
£10m?? Not a chance mate. I'm not saying he's not worth that, I like they guy. However it is becoming increasingly apparent that he's not in too much demand. It's probably become a battle of wills over signing the new contract offer. I can't see either party backing down so the only outcome on the horizon is Lunny goes in Jan for £2m ish or he hangs on in there till the end of the season and goes on a free.

Whatever scenario it's in his best interest to fight for a place and put himself in the shop window. As far as the club is concerned, he's going for pretty much fuck all so we might as well get what we can out of him on the pitch.

One thing is for sure (although I doubt he will) if him and his agent start with the Duffy antics he will be given the season off to shop in Bootle.
