John Lundstram

Is Leonard a similar type of player to Coutts? From what I’ve read and the few bits I’ve seen he doesn’t strike me as being that type of player at all.

He isn't the same as Coutts but he influences a game from Midfield by being very comfortable on the ball and with the ball.

I am not anti lundstram - Lundstram might end up being better than them all - just don't think he is the ideal replacement for Coutts in the way we play. We are now 6th and I keep hearing "give Lundstram the chance to develop" - for me, we need an instant replacement, as near to Coutts as possible to get back to winning games of football the way we were and in a very similar style. Our method of playing was settled, it isn't now and that does include silly and continual changes to the back 3.

It seems quite pointed that we make a bid early December, to try and get a deal sorted well before Jan 1st. Any combination of Fleck/Basham/Lundstram in centre midfield will make us more ordinary than we are looking now. Carruthers doesn't appear to be in the frame, which is fair enough, but we need someone who can influence a game in a similar way to Coutts.

Lunny looked like an instant replacement the other night tbh. He was excellent and I've seen in him the potential I saw in Coutts in a game against Scunny a few years ago. Coutts has gone on to be the player I thought he could be but I'll be honest and say that I reckon Lunny has the potential to be better than Coutts.

But Leonard wouldn’t be an instant replacement for Coutts as far as I can tell as he’s supposedly a very different type of player.

Lundstram seems quite comfortable on the ball, or at least he did the other night.

I don’t think it means anything particularly that we’ve made an early bid as that is how Wilder seems to like to carry out his business. By the sounds of things we’ve made bids for a few players so far.

It's only an opinion, but for me Lundstram was as near a replacement for Fleck and Leonard was as near a replacement for Coutts.

On the Bleacher Report, it looks like Lundstram was intended to be the direct back-up for Fleck. The West Ham youngster was lined up to be back-up for Coutts (presumably replacing Leonard after we moved on). As you can see, Carruthers, Basham, and Brooks are all considered options for the Fleck role in midfield based on this.

Good - now lets go and try and get Leonard to replace Coutts as the master plan originally suggests.

He looked very promising, I have to agree. He's improving gradually with each game. What he has to work on though is:

  1. Staying switched on when the other team have the ball.
  2. Taking on the quarter back role that Coutts plays. I.e. when Basham or O'Connell bomb forward, Coutts always drops back in. Without this, we'll be exposed.
He did this on Friday - Danny Higginbotham pointed it out during a replay in the first half when Bash was overlapping Baldock.

TBH I think lundstram is growing into the team week by week game by game,I'm hoping he gets a real run in the team to showcase his skills, because I still think he's an asset for our team and club, time is on his side aswell, let's not forget that.
