John Lundstram

He’s a solid player and the more games he gets the better he will be. Same goes for all on the bench

Dare I say it but he reminds me a lot of Steven Gerrard - without the cheating, constant whinging and the face like a smacked arse!

He’s doing well imo, team has to adjust to his strengths/weaknesses also like it did with Coutts...be interesting to see who he pairs up with now Fleck is out...

Let's hope carruthers can come along and join the party then

sincerely hope so

Bollocks. No creativity and won't shoot because no confidence. He's playing like a Carrick at the moment. That's fine as far as it goes. We need more.

After getting over the disappointment from last night, just wanted to praise John Lundstram for his performance. Thought he was outstanding (until he had to play a different role after Fleck was sent off), and was a contender for MOM. He's really starting to come good, and I think we all may be pleasantly surprised with him in the near future. 2 good feet, does all the simple things well, and has a little burst of pace to get himself away from other players. Been a lot of pressure on the lad, and I'm delighted he starting to prove people wrong.

I thought he was good last night and credit to him. Still tends to be a bit negative and looking for the safe option at times but when he goes for it and plays forward he looks good.

Let's not forget Louis Reed, currently on loan at Chesterfield, when we are considering midfield options. Today he was voted man-of-the-match against Barnet, who are physically-imposing, if not the most gifted opposition, and he withstood their physical style very well despite his small stature. He looked after the ball very well and hopefully will learn a lot from Jack Lester, coming back to us a much improved player. Compared with Carruthers the other night, he was a class above in my opinion, even allowing for the difference in class, but that is probably being a bit unfair to Carruthers who has probably not had that much of a chance to shine

I think he’s had 2 or 3 assists as well since he came in. Reckon the Oxford fans may have called it right when they said we’d got a gem.

His biggest problem (like Coutts) was that he couldn’t tackle for toffee, but just like Coutts he’s learning how to put a foot in and nick the ball. Tackling isn’t all about blood and guts, timing is just as important and if he can continue to improve and add ball winning to his ball retention and passing game we could have a real asset on our hands.

Agreed, looks better n better everytime I see him. Still not a Stearman fan though, I'd rather see Jake Wright in CB, I think that's what we've been missing to be fair.

The biggest difference for me is that he's stopped looking for the 40 yard 'marquee' ball and going for the more obvious simple pass whilst keeping the game flowing.

I'm pretty sure this is down to CW and the coaching staff and has made his game vastly more effective.

Could be onto another winner here.

Pity they don't do unlikes because Lundstram was below average v Bristol. Lost numerous 50/50s which for a big bloke he should have won easily, and his only passes (which were very laboured) that found our own players were side or backwards, the ones forward went out or to the opposition. Lundstram very average player, if we want to go up has to be replaced in January.

Below average? Did the pass forward for leons goal go out or to the opposition?

I honestly find some of our fanbase incredible.

Lundstrams range of passing v Bristol was sideways, backwards, out or to the opposition ... i honestly find some of our fanbase incredibly accepting of mediocrity. Proof of the pudding ... how many games have we won/lost with Lundstram in the team #f***offbacktoscouseside

You are joking aren't you?

In his short time here and the first team, his improvements have been ridiculously great. He looked a lost lamb very early with stray passes and negative play. but on but Friday night he was immense, some great passing and controlled our midfield pretty well after Fleck was sent off.
I think he has a higher ceiling then Coutts, I just hope we can start picking up some results with him in the team, at the moment it feels like he is a curse.
I don't think we have picked up a win with us starting him yet.. lets get that monkey off his back if that is true.

Are you right in the head?

He did a stunning defensive header near the end of the game. We were so exposed and there was one space to clear it too that allowed us to get it away. His awareness to find that space was truly was one and was judgement not luck before someone comes back with that.

I think we beat Ipswich with him in the starting line-up, but we haven't won since he's come back.

Seem to recall the ‘backwards/ sideways’ tag being applied to Coutts not so long back...

Thought Lunstram played very well v Bristol to be fair - quite possibly near to MOM - who got it by the way as I missed the announcement?

I do intend playing devils advocate though and ask why CW has gone back to Southend with another bid for Leonard - (IMHO) it's NOT to replace Fleck.

Making a bid early December is so that he would be signed for 1st Jan (possibly too late for Derby I do not know), but it's certainly not a slow burner throughout January of will we, won't we.

We play differently with Lundstram in the team - perhaps it's not what CW actually wants.

Why would Wilder sign Lundstram if he doesn’t want to play him?

If Wilder has gone back in for Leonard then it might be because regardless of how goodie Lundstram is or isn’t we are currently a midfielder down, with Coutts being out injured.

You could be right - Lundstram may be above the pecking order if Leonard was here already. Carruthers was above Brookes, but isn't anymore.

It's only an opinion, but for me Lundstram was as near a replacement for Fleck and Leonard was as near a replacement for Coutts. We need a Coutts type replacement - our midfield looks too ordinary and samey at present. Leonard may give us more options.

Or you could look at the facts, which will show that Lunny has made more tackles than any other United player in each of our last 3 matches. And got the assist for Leon's goal on Friday.

He's not the finished article but he's turned into a more than adequate replacement for Coutts.

That's a fair question. Not sure if Lundstram was just brought in as second choice after we failed to get Leonard, or if Wilder would've signed him anyway. Whichever it is, Lundstram has stepped in and done pretty well.

Because he's replacing our most important player, and because his arrival in the first time has coincided with a poor run of results, some fans are on his back. But correlation ain't causation and I can't see a reason to blame Lundstram for us losing any of these games.

Personally I think adding Leonard to the mix for the midfield positions will just give us more options and I hope Lundstram stays in contention for a starting place.

Is Leonard a similar type of player to Coutts? From what I’ve read and the few bits I’ve seen he doesn’t strike me as being that type of player at all.
