MOTD coverage of our game v West Ham on 19th February 1966, which also happens to be the last time that Joe Shaw played. Sadly the game ended in a 4-0 defeat and watch out for one of the most awful own goals you'll ever see.

My first match at the Lane was a few weeks later, on Easter Monday ... so close to seeing the great man. Reg Matthewson was centre-half by the time of my first game (which we lost 0-1 at home to Blackpool).

Edit: it might have been Ken Mallender against Blackpool, as I now see that Matthewson was playing in this game.

Joe Shaw was an unused sub in the following week's 1-1 home draw against L**ds and then after that he decided to retire.

The ball retention (from both teams) is absolutely shocking. Simple short passes going straight to the opposition. To be fair, the pitch looks pretty bad, as they all were then, but it really shows how much tactics have moved on, and why managers are so keen to avoid giving the ball away.

Woodward, Jones, Birchenall & Reece. Have United ever put a team out since with that quality of firepower up front all at once?

Pity the defence was shite. After the breakup of Cec, Shaw x 2, Richardson and Summers, United struggled for a few years before it came good again.

We finished 9th that season! Since then, the 1974-75 season was the only season when we finished in a higher place!

I just missed out on seeing Joe Shaw unfortunately, although in some ways I am glad because I wouldn't have seen him at his best, which according to my dad & grandad, was awesome.
