Whilst I agree that they are not McDonalds or Burger King, their managing director got 600k which is more than 25 times the salary of the lowest worker.

You're pissed off at 25????? In 1999, the average was 47 times. In 2009 it was 128. So yeah, pretty fucking equitable, I reckon.

And while I'm on it, just what is wrong with a company targetting the 'up-market' independent of how it is structured. By your logic, Rolex should be making Noddy watches and every craftsman making expensive hand-made items should not be doing so?

No, but I question the whole working partnership when the managing director gets a footballers salary and the lowest paid worker gets that of a cleaner. Waitrose and John Lewis price their goods (and aim their marketing strategy for that matter)at the middle to upper classes.

And what's wrong with that?

Morrisey and Marr deserved most of the money. They were the band! The vast majority of people will never of heard of Rourke and Joyce and they contributed very little. Whether they were a little unfair with their follow band members, or not, takes nothing away from the band being working class, anti establishment and left leaning politically.

Rourke and Joyce contributed excatly the same as Marr and Morrisey during performances, which is what the claim was contested on, not songwriting.

actually jon lewis partnership is about the nearest to a cooperative apart from the cooperative.. they look after their workforce and pay reasonable bonuses.. much as i detest the smiths (most overrated band of all time after the rolling stones) you can't really criticise

Ollie,

Christ I’ve heard some gripes on here, but a dig at John Lewis? Whatever next.

I’ve shopped there for years and to be honest I couldn’t give a feck what the MD earns, I couldn’t care what you earn, I couldn’t care what Ched or Flynn earn.

What I care about when I go to a department store is that I get a decent deal. John Lewis provides this in many ways:
- Price – Recently I got a new Hackett Jacket. I’d tried it on in a store in Switzerland but when I looked in the UK it was 1/3 of the price. Trouble was it was out of stock in my size in most places online and in Harrisons on Eccy Road. However, they still had some obscure sizes on the Hackett website, but as it was in the clearance I had no chance of getting it from Hackett direct. John Lewis had it on at RRP but our lass took the web page and got it for the online sale price plus a tenner knocked off.
- Home Deliveries – They deliver when you want and with proper time slots.
- Customer Service/ Product knowledge – I buy a lot of gear from them because they know their stuff, always found the people in the Audio/ Visual section v helpful. Plus they don’t try and sell you aftercare that you don’t need.
- Quality – Quite simply they do not sell cheap tat. Sure the outlay for bedding/ Towels etc may be a little more, but they’ve lasted way longer than the equivalent from other department stores.

Feel free to contest any of these with your own experiences, but I’ve never had a bad experience with John Lewis

Have you forgotten how they crushed the miners and presided over record levels of unemployment? ;)

Loved The Smiths...not too bothered that they have used their recording in a TV advert (also used in Ferris Bueller's day off, if I recall correctly). Just heard Thomson holidays are using The Pixies' 'Where is my mind?' for their advert also...another quality tune which I didn't expect to be used to 'sell stuff!'

They used a cover in Ferris Buellers day off, but the original has been in plenty of other films, presumably also sanctioned by the smiths

Ollie,
Your football politics have left me all of a muddle
Ollie,
We are joined in the ideological cuddle

I'm celebrating my love for you
With a pint of beer and a new tattoo
And if you haven't noticed yet
I'm more impressionable when my cement is wet

Sometimes when we're as close as this
It's like we're in a dream
How can you lie there and think of England
When you don't even know who's in the team?

I trust you mean The Smiths, Nick, not the peerless Rolling Stones!

I do like the Stones, Pinchy, but have to say that they were completely unoriginal. Excellent band, but owe it all to the black american blues players, they regurgitated it more closely than anybody else, without actually adding much too it. Nowt wrong with that, but they didn't change music in the way The Beatles did, maybe that's what super_pig is getting at?

Agreed, but who were the truly original rock/pop bands?

Roxy Music? Steely Dan?

Certainly different, but original?

I don't know the answer, by the way. It's not one of my usual rhetorical questions! I'm a music lover rather than connoisseur.

Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Wire, Joy Division.........

There are lots.

Ah well, there you go. I haven't (so far as I know) heard anything by any of them (my loss, not their's). In fact I haven't heard of two of them at all!

Guess I'll just stay on that Gold Coast slave ship!

And like I said, I had you down as a Wham fan, or perhaps Aha, ABC or Tears for Fears.

Ha ha ha.

Button your cardy up and try again. My music collection is fairly eclectic, but does tend to lean somewhat towards the rockier side. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Anthrax and Guns 'N' Roses are prominet, but there's all kinds of stuff on there, and there is even one A-Ha track to keep you happy.

There is no Smiths. There never will be.

27 year old goalkeeper released by Cardiff today.

He was very highly rated when they signed him from Peterborough a few years back (I think he was their regular keeper during their rise from League 2 to Championship under Ferguson).

I certainly rated him and expected him to go on to establish himself as a first choice Championship/Premiership stopper but seems he never got his break at Cardiff and was loaned out for most of his time there. Also played for England at all youth levels.

Thoughts everyone? Would he be good competition for George?

He'd be my first choice goalkeeper signing. Just like last summer!

Needs to get a decent club and be the number 1. He'd sign for us.
