I had some very close business contacts in Lisbon and Porto, most of the management team were either Benfica or Porto fans. When United hosted Benfica, I went down to the Lane a few days later to see if I could get a programme for them. Derek Dooley got me fixed up, and I posted it to the MD at the Lisbon HQ.
A couple of days later, my mobile rang, and he said "Jimmy Hagan's club!"

A man much revered in Portugal.

Good read about not only a blades legend in the true sense of the word, but someone who truly contributed to football in a way Ronaldo never has and never will.

Very interesting. The only reason my father coached Estoril was because 2 of the bouncers on the door at Estoril Casino persuaded him to do a coaching clinic at their club. He was out of work after leaving Benfica over a contractual dispute and couldn't take any paid job. He went along and coached them for free and got them promoted to the top division that season.

Alpine welcome ,some old guys I have a drink with match days always tell me your dad was the greatest footballer they ever watched ,and then went on to be a benfica legend .liked the story about him falling out with wba players for making them train in shorts when it was freezing ,don't know what old gloves and Woolie hat Kieran freeman would have made of him .

If anyone is near a radio H&J are about to talk about Jimmy on Talksport.

My father's favourite player also. Started a love affair with Portugal that went on till the day he died. Holidayed Estoril/cascais for decades and bought enough port from the Port Wine Institute to float a boat. Still got three of the 70's vintages..

Definitely can back that up, I have many friends in Portugal and Jimmy is a legend there, as he is here. I never saw him, but to learn about Jimmy is to be steeped in what it really means to support Sheffield United. How many of today's recent players will be spoken of like that?
