Haven't done too well with previous Walsall players. Etheridge is out of contract but would he come as back up for Moore? Or would he be first choice?

First choice I reckon, not sure Moore is good enough for the championship

"However, past signings from Walsall have not worked out well for the Blades in recent seasons with Darryl Westlake, Febian Brandy and Andy Butler all flopping all at Bramall Lane."

That's the only issue, that said if CW sez they're good enough.........

A couple of the more realistic targets that have been mentioned. Etheridge would be good competition for Moore (& therefore (thankfully) make Long surplus to requirements) and McCarthy would be a great option/cover at RWB, esp if Freeman (& his representative) decide to play hardball over a new contract, and has done well in both his loan spells since graduating from the S'ton academy.

I'd be v happy should CW land one/both.

Freemans contract has an option for us to extend it a further year.

So I understand but I'd expect the club to offer new terms to him and the others in the same boat. Freeman (& agent) do have previous in contract negotiations remember - his signing was initially delayed due to his salary demands. I'm sure he'll have a number of Champ suitors that he'll be able to use to lever a better deal from Utd this time.

Freeman's already signed for next season as is Coutts and Basham on the one year option kick in, if they played more than a certian number of games - which they have. Wilder confirmed the extensions recently. Only for one extra year though but I would imagine that all three will be extended maybe even in the summer.

As for the two Walsall players, I really like the sound of McCarthy and is exactly the type we should be going for. He can play centre back as well as right wing back, has been a player of the season already in his career (Wycombe) and has really impressed this season for Walsall. I think he plays primarily right wing back, whereas I'd be slightly happier if he was a centre back because there is the greatest need, assuming Ebanks-Landell isn't going to be brought.

Both players are young and have already impressed at their clubs so its the right type we should be going for. I can't see Moore been number 2 though somehow, I think he's done enough to justify starting number one next season but we all know he faces little challenge from Long, so maybe that's the logic.

McCarthy is primarily a centre back. So when you consider his age and how well he's done at RWB, he appeals a lot.

Was not aware of that. In that case, i'd off load Brayford and give Freeman the extra to make it up.

I think Mccarthy is Wilder's type of player, Walsall fans desperate to keep him and describe him as an engine and bombs down the wing when he plays on the right, to say his main position is CB but he's doing so well as a wing back also I think he's a player we should really consider bringing in with his versatility and potential, chips in with a couple of goals too. His contract at Southampton ends this Summer and he said in an interview he will be open for options if he's not going to be given a chance in the Southampton team.

think we would have to pay compensation to Southampton?

Well BII, we can't expect all our signings to cost nowt. It is a fair step up and we need to invest in a bit of quality coupled with some added pace. I fully expect that we're going to have to spend a few bob to compete in order to consolidate and if he's for sale and meets CW's valuation then that is good enough for me.

Then of course we've also been tipped off that this is a massive. massive, more massive than ever before jump up to the biggest league in the world. Even more massive than the Prem league, La Liga and the Bundesliga.

I know this for a fact cos Wendies say so. ;)

It's clear to see that CW is extremely keen on competition and everyone fighting for there shirt. If he believes Long isn't pushing Moore as hard as he needs too then a new keeper will have too. Etheridge played 3 very good games against us and looks excellent. Came for every single cross and made some good saves. If he does sign may the best/hardest worker / most consistent keeper get the number 1 shirt.

In regards to money being spent etc, we need a balance of free agents for squad players to push current team. Then the ones we spend money on should be coming straight into the starting 11.

Always worry that with such an eclectic mix there will be a big wage differential and that causes resentment. Our strength this season appears to have been the unity of the squad. I assume he will try and bring in a balanced wage structure but can't see anyone wanting less that a five figure wage each week.

Southampton are clearly still good at giving their youngsters a go in the first team even at their heady heights, with Puel as with Koeman.

So you'd think McCarthy would be in line for first team chances there after the season he's just had. But I suppose Lloyd Isgrove was in a similar position this season, & he hasn't been able to kick on with Southampton. Who knows?

He's certainly had a fine season. And that right back/centre back versatility would certainly be welcome.

Just that none of these "rumours" ever seem to come to pass. Our Christopher plays his transfer cards very close to his chest.

I see your point. But if we go to sign an out of contract player he holds all the cards he can choose how much he wants and play teams against each other. Knowing that no one is paying a fee for him.

Best example is carruthers. He would have been £500k at start of season , £250k in Jan, free in Summer. His wages won't masively have changed I wouldn't think between when we would have signed him.

I thought we agreed no more Walsall players?

Brandy. Cuvelier. Butler.

God no

We need to build more of a squad. These are the perfect signings if true. Both are good league one players with a potential to be good good championship players one day.

As a squad we cannot hold 22 good championship players in our first season. So we have to get some players such as these who when called upon are still very good and our quality only drops slightly.

Next season if Freeman gets injured, our quality at that position falls dramatically. Same with Moore.

Adam Smith (Northamption GK) has announced this morning that he'll be moving on and may be an option is Etheridge is not lined-up.

Highly rated, well known to CW, did well against Utd the other week, now out of contract and probably Champ bound - would't be the biggest surprise if Utd were in for him (although I have absolutely no evidence they are)

Wilder might fancy Adam Smith, he played well against us at their place but is he any better than Moore?
I think Etheridge on the other hand might be...

IOut of the two, I've seen more of Smith and he's generally impressed me, particularly his shot stopping - he also always strikes me as a typical, off-his-head GK. Etheridge however dominates the penalty area and I don't recall him missing a thing in the games he played against Utd this season.

IMO either would provide excellent competition to Moore next season and would be a huge upgrade on poor old George.
