We are attains Shrewsbury for a player released by Oldham. Oh my feckin mother :(

Wilder said he wanted players that had done well at this level, and I'm assuming he has or Oldham hence he's now wanting to better himself. What would we prefer? A decent defender from League One at 27 or another Championship journey man at 30 plus on bigger wages? I know I'd prefer the Wilson type myself.

He seems decent from the Oldham FC Profile page:

Exciting central defender who has made 13 appearances for Wales at all levels.

Great in the air for a defender likes to push forward and has scored two goals in the process.

42 appearances during the 2014/15 season for Athletic showed how much he is valued by the club since joining on a free transfer from Bristol City.

Wilson is a strong, athletic defender with much promise.

2 goals in years. One of which came against us. Collins and Edgar are more prolific.

1 senior cap for Wales 3 years ago.

at least he's played a decent number of games over the last couple of years suggesting he's fairly robust.

Positives - athletic, decent pace for a centre half, can play a bit. Would fit into Wilder's playing style, where full backs are encouraged to go forward, meaning centre halves must cope with a bit less support. At 27 should be peaking for a centre half now. Free. Oldham fans say he can look classy when on form.

Negatives - not the most commanding. More similar to Kilgallon than Morgan and many won't like that. Has admitted that he needs to play alongside a talker, although that's a quote that's not new, maybe he's developed with more experience? Can look a bit lethargic. Not likely to offer much in the opposition box, poor scoring record.

Conclusion - Good potential, can his weak sides be improved with improved motivation and organisation?

Have you seen him play?

Is he the guy that was sent off when we drew at their place?

Seem to remember Billy giving a big clumsy centre half the runaround. Thought he might have been their captain?

When we tonked them 3-0 at the lane last season not one player looked decent.

Is he likely to be better than Edgar? 28 year old, battling relegation with Oldham and not getting much in the way of mentions for his performances along the way. I’m not convinced. In fact, if that’s the pond we’re fishing in we might have been as well keeping McGahey on.

The guy your thinking about is Anthony Gerrard?

If Tufty is bringing in three (and I hope he does) the competition for a shirt should be adequate motivation. Let's say he brings in, for example, this lad together with McFadz and Killa then you'd think Wilson would be third choice initially?

This is the type of player we need to fill in at centre half for us. He has experience of the league with a strong potential to push for that starting spot.

I can only see him being third choice at the start, with us obviously keen on Mcfazdean. But I would happily take this signing for cover.

He wouldn't have gone on loan to Brighton and Derby in the last two seasons if he wasn't decent. But he had an ACL injury and you never know how a player might be affected by that.

It might be that 'risk factor' that allows us to get him tho.

Suspect we are in the second tier of championship loan destinations until we are established in the division. Most of our signings are gonna have to be gambles to some extent.

I hope there is something in this (rather than rumours) as if Wilson is fit again, has bags of pace and potential.

I think he'd be a good signing, however with all loans of young strikers, getting off to a good start wouldn't be imperative.

This would be an excellent signing as we could just give him the old James Wilsons shirt and thus save ourselves ruck loads of money in not reprinting new shirts
