Mate, if someone trashed your profession with daft comments you might want to defend it. I have never met James Shield but some of the comments about him are ridiculous.

You tell 'em. Not all journalists are seedy, phone-hacking, alcoholics with no moral scruples (although all Sun and Daily Mail journos probably are)

Slagging off The Star automatically means we are slagging of James himself? Is he the editor as well? Only one or two did earlier in the thread but you can clearly see we are highlighting poor content in The Star.

Also criticising our local paper means we deserve a good twatting? How about you jog on with that veiled threat dkc. I am sure James wouldn't feel the need to twat someone who didn't like his work or his employer.

Anyway it seems clear The Star should be immune from criticism on this forum.

Should they decide tomorrow to employ him in another area of the country writing about another football team, he'll go.

The one thing you know now about Tony Pritchett, the stories he wrote about weren't gleaned from
internet football forums and social media sites. There's very few journalists I rate in the sporting arena,
most of them will be supplemented by outside sources to report 'ONLY' what they have told to report.

There was a case being built about a Premier League captain who had made a girl of fifteen pregnant, which was ''hushed'' and ''filed away'' as the reporter was given a life-changing financial incentive NOT to leak...

We're only told what they want us to know.

Have discussed the reportage of the Star with Shield on a number of occasions. He's approachable and listens to concerns, but is limited in what he can do about it..

As I pointed out very early on in this thread I believe Shields is hamstrung by being The Star's nod towards accepting there is a Sheffield United however he doesn't produce good articles! We all know there are better articles on here every week and all he has to do is lift the format do the work himself and it would be alright. Fuck knows he could even come up with some of his own ideas, I mean if the people who work in the 'profession' who post on here are to be believed we don't know what we are doing and journalists do! Well why don't they prove it then?

As far as work goes... the editor is in charge!!..... He dictates how many stories about United.. how many words etc. In any given day..

Certain things James Shields is told off the record no doubt... he can't then go and print it!!..

Some people on here will be more in the know because they had a pint in the royal standard with some bloke who told him summat that some kid he met in B and Q earlier told him..

Clearly people have mates who work at the club who find out stuff!!.. they can say it on here.. James Shield can't say it in the press..

Yes The Star is a pretty poor paper but it's pretty symptomatic of local newspapers up and down the country. When people stopped buying them they were all way too slow to realise that everyone was reading news online - and when you look at The Star's archaic website they're probably not reading online either. What's more, there are plenty of alternative news sources online now that provide higher quality news on better-designed websites for free. That means The Star has to cut costs, fire staff and what they now seem to be doing is posting click-baity stuff in the vague hope that it will drive more traffic to the site. They have a Celebs section on the site ffs, it has to be seen to be believed. All a little desperate really, but like I say it's not just The Star that has resorted to this.

And, my God...thy have an app but it's a total joke. Just look at all of the 1 star reviews for it. I can only assume the editors are dinosaurs still stuck in the print age.

I see The Star app received 6 (out of 35) 4 & 5* reviews but only one has a write up which is, 'very good'. I'll wager those 6 reviews were inserted by The Stars own reporters, given the evidence.

I like The Star (not that I actually ever want to read it). It's sort of a comedy throwback that walks the line between being a load of garbled nonsense and being a complete satire of itself.

Even James Sheild is the image of the platonic grizzled aging sports journalist whose heart isn't in it anymore.

I like to imagine him in an office surrounded by young interns, passing out bits of advice that none of them take but pretend they do so they don't hurt his feelings...him eyeballing the young men, desperately wanting to talk to them about which of the new women are the fittest, but cautious because of the warning he got last time. You can't say anything these days.

Of course that's all hypothetical, even though it's almost certainly true.
