Home Grown Rule:

At present, Section 5 of the EFL’s Rules and Regulations (“EFL Rules and Regulations”) requires each EFL club to nominate 6 home grown players on their team sheet for each league match (which includes Play-Off matches) (Rule 33.7).

Following the EFL’s recent announcement, EFL clubs have agreed to increasethat number to 7 for the 2018-19 season.

A “Home Grown Player” is defined in the (Rule 33.8) as a player who:

  • irrespective of their nationality or age, has been registered with either:
    • their current club (who is a member of the EFL); and/or
    • a club and/or any other football club affiliated with the Football Association (“FA“) or Football Association of Wales (for example, EPL or non-league clubs)
    • for a period, continuous or non-continuous, of three seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which they turn 21).
In addition to the increase in home grown players that will be required on EFL’s clubs team sheets, a new definition will be introduced to the EFL Rules and Regulations, that of the “club-developed” player. Each EFL club will need to include one “club-developed” player in their match day squad, who will be defined as a player who has been registered with their current team for at least 12 months prior to the end of their U19 season. Should a club fail to name such a player, they will only be able to name 6 substitutes rather than the normal allocation of 7.
So in terms of our current squad what does this mean? What current squad players are classed as homegrown that would need to be in a squad of 18 on a match day?

assuming those are the correct, up to date regs.....
I'd say it's reasonably straightforward (famous last words)
HOME GROWN means English or Welsh grown. Three seasons or 36 months at ANY English or Welsh Club up until they are 21. Clubs need to name six of those on the teamsheet (& 7 from next year). I haven't audited it, but surely that must be all our English born players. Although I suppose there is the odd chance some English born players go through Scottish Academies.
CLUB DEVELOPED means developed at Shirecliffe. 12 months at Shirecliffe up to the end of their U19 season. I assume that includes Sharp, Reed & Brooks & Eastwood. We only need to name one on the teamsheet.

I'll hear otherwise..... but, that is my understanding. I don't think we've got any worries whatsoever....

None, we could just name six if we wanted to.

Is it just me who finds this 'home grown player' rule a load of nonsense? Basically they are saying you can have 11 foreign trained players in the squad but no more and while ever we are still a member of the EU I'd question whether that rule wasn't against employment law.

That has explained it to me perfectly. So in other words the rule is a complete waste of time, unless you have a squad full of foreigners.

Saw a fair bit of the 23s last year and the defence looked stronger with Ramsdale and Long in net. Should be remembered that our number two keeper will be constantly on the first team bench and last season the reserve keeper did not play for the 23s. If the same applies this year Eastwood is way too inexperienced and so an experienced keeper is needed this year
What I saw of Eastwood he looked a decent player who will develope this season as the regular first choice at Under 23. I look forward to seeing his development.

Doesn't seem like it's a problem we have to worry about so much, but the likes of Huddersfield last season, Leeds maybe and some of the teams coming down then maybe it would cause a few selection problems here and there.

Also seems like a very useful exercise to bring in players around the 17 years old mark like we have done with Brooks, Che Adams, Kieran Wallace etc. as players who haven't exactly come through our acadamy but have been realeased and allow us to fulfill our 'homegrown' quota with players who are able to make a real impact.
