Expectation will be, or ought to be, that at best he will fill in and plug the gaps. We can’t expect much more than that from a free agent in October and we wouldn’t get much more than that in the market. It would be hard to be hugely disappointed in what is a shot to nothing, although I imagine some will with absolute relish.

What does it say about the existing squad if 38games in 5years gets him in the team, it could demoralise them even more. Also blocks the development of the youth to get their chance.

Players should only be getting in the squad on merit whether they're new signings, youth prospects who have been here since 6 or multi-million pount purchases. The biggest demoralising factor will be the manager picking players regardless of form or impact, which seems to be a strong possiblity at the moment.

Riedewald's injury history is no better or worse than Tom Davies' or Danny Ings' and for a lot of his time at Palace he was just not selected by the manager. I'd not write him off based on the number of games played (or not).
