Just seen this post from him on X. Even as a Sheffield United fan I hope he’s okay and hopefully Sheffield Wednesday manage to reach out to him. I’ve seen thousands of Wednesday fans who follow him acknowledge his post and are @ mentioning his ex teammates and the Sheffield Wednesday official X account so they are aware.

My thoughts are with him and I hope he can get the help he needs quickly.

I feel for the lad, it's an awful cross to bear...but to say that "gambling addiction has to be the worst type of addiction" shows a wild lack of awareness of other addictions and what they do to people's lives.

No one's ever died as a direct result of gambling.

Like I say, I feel for the guy. But that's a wild overstatement

I hope he's ok but, if we ever see this sort of stuff again, please consider contacting the Police too.

Seriously, they can do some clever stuff around enquiries and locating a phone quickly in life threatening emergencies, which that appeared to have been. Our heroes might be on twitter, but sometimes unfair to burden them just as we might be following or cross following each other but really don't know what they have going on too.

Puts things into perspective a little eh?

Take care folks.

Poor guy. Unfortunately a very common story amongst footballers who find themselves with plenty of disposable income and time, and too little guidance and support.
And at the same time so many clubs (including now ours!) are advertising gambling companies all over their shirts. Given the huge individual and societal damage, it’s totally indefensible.

(For clarity: I’m not saying ban gambling, and I know many people can gamble responsibly. I’m saying ban gambling advertising, as we do with lots of other harmful products).

He’s literally talking about feeling suicidal as a result of gambling addiction - and (thank god, it sounds like he didn’t) he certainly wouldn’t be the first to end his life for that reason.
Agree that comparing different addictions is probably not helpful, but let’s not underestimate the harm that gambling addiction does.

I assure you that they have. Huge debts, suicide. I've seen it up close. You couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

Many people have died as a direct result of gambling. And I say this as a recovering alcoholic who has seen many people die from that, too. All addictions kill one way or annother and none of them are ever something that the addicted person chose for themselves. It’s the luck of the draw, completely random and doesn’t discriminate.

And every best wish and ounce of strength your way for your recovery journey. I haven't been there but worked with and amongst many who have, with addictions of various types. Take care mate.

And yet football is full of ads for gambling- putting "gamble responsibly" messages on them and banning them from appearing on kids' kits just seems like virtue signalling.

I know the Prem is banning betting firms from advertising on front of kits from next season but they still can appear on the shoulders I think.

A former colleague's husband took his own life due to gambling debts

First thoughts are with this young man, hope he can get the help it seems like he needs.

I do think something has to be done about gambling advertisements, and perhaps how some gambling firms seem to encourage people to gamble more.

It's a difficult one as a gambling company wants to make money, and their business model relies on people betting and losing money (or the overall book is in their favour).

I gamble quite a lot, I know that's subjective but I bet on the horses every weekend. I'm lucky in that I know my limits and can easily walk away and don't go chasing my losses, and see it as money I can lose out of my monthly entertainment budget. Other people don't have that personality, and I can see how people can get sucked in seeking that next hit (the amount of rich footballers who gamble tells you gambling is rarely about money, if that makes sense, more about chasing the next hit).

What I really struggle with is when you have a gambling account online, a lot of firms are giving you free bets for other things.

I am always offered free bets on a casino app, which is the sister app to the app I use for horse racing betting in the US. This practice should be controlled more, as this is trying to reel people in to bet more and more.

Hard one to call as the gambling companies would rightly say they're not forcing people to gamble.

Poor lad. Hopefully now he’s come out and admitted his demons he can get the help and support he needs!

Remember you’re never as alone as you think you are.

As someone who’s worked in the Gambling Industry. The lack of regulation on marketing and exposure since apps became a thing has made things shit loads worse. Needs sorting ASAP.

You can’t actually be that naive surely?

A former colleague's husband took his own life due to gambling debts

To clarify...I'm a recovered gambling addict and spent a good few years in the grip of it...I think a few of you have misunderstood my comments.

I hung myself in 2020 (not entirely related to the gambling, I must add) and am lucky to be here. Here more by good luck than judgment.

I'm no stranger to suicide and I'm not downplaying the torment that a gambling addiction causes.

However...a gambling addict has to choose to allow the mental hold it has on them, to lead them to make the decision to hang themselves.

Your heart isn't going to stop suddenly because you gambled too much, a lá cocaine addiction.

Your liver isn't going to pack in because you've gambled too much, a là alcoholism.

Your brain isn't going to slow down to the point where you cannot breathe because you've gambled too much, a lá heroin overdose.

Hence, no direct death from gambling.

It's a psychological addiction, one that can lead the addict to such a dark place that they choose to take their own lives...not because the body develops such a physical dependency on the addiction that the body literally fails.

Perspective.

Source? Been there myself.

Glad that he's safe and sound, brave of him to speak up about it, but still...it's far from the worst addiction there is.

How many of you post on here with tips, talk about gambling, bragging about wins...find me one post where someone's swapping numbers for heroin dealers, bragging about how many rocks they burned on a weekend or telling people to "lump on" because Jonny Junk has a great offer on.

Have a good day 👍🏻

Ive been Gambling for over 35 years .....
You have to know, when to cool it down .
I feel like I'm addicted as I can't go a week without a bet ...
But its under control ....
And I like it 👌

I used to work for a gambling firm in a safer gambling department and heard a few sad stories. I like a bet myself and because of what ive seen etc I know the importance of setting a limit

I go to the races with the mrs I bring say 100 quid when its gone its gone

Hope this lad gets the help he needs. Many footballers need financial advisors to help them invest sensibly and not spend it all on betting
