It’s just what United do

Nobody’s expecting promotion or a play off finish we’re currently a mid table club.

Isn’t anybody allowed to have an opinion on saint Wilders tactics or players he signs or turgid brand of football he plays?

using Wednesday as a marker is taking us nowhere fast.

Though strangely they have a mentality that they are better than us.
They belong in the PL
They belong in the top six.

Every fan of every club wishes they were better, even clubs like Arsenal with ONLY one PL title in over 20 years.

I've been watching the Blades for 50 years.
I think I've worked out our position in the pyramid.
I can hope for better, but expecting better every year is just bad for your health.

I can hope to win the lottery every week, but expecting to win the lottery only results in a state of permanent disappointment.

If they taught philosophy in schools then people might be more content with reality, rather than constantly searching for a scapegoat to blame for life's 'disappointments'.

I don’t in all fairness think I have felt like this at the start of the season

Everyone of course is entitled to their own opinion, and the club fan base seems split especially on the Facebook sites with many feeling like me, but plenty criticising anybody that has the audacity to be seen as negative.

United just seem to do everything slowly, whether is getting players in or playing the actual game, it’s slow. I must not make this post too long, otherwise people will give up reading it. But while Middlesbrough for example, except and sell their best player quickly and then start replacing, ironically of course, including an ex United player. We limp on towards the start of the season with pretty much the same squad +2 additions that are hardly going to improve the quite frankly turgid football we played last season. In fact, the football we have played in the last two seasons has been without doubt the worst I have ever seen. Some people of course or saying it’s all about winning, to an extent of course that is correct but we have to be entertained as well don’t we? I certainly won’t drive 140 miles anymore to watch the shite that is being served up at the moment.

Other sides in the championship, whether they were relegated promoted or even the ones that did bugger all last season are spending money or certainly bringing players in . But of course, what’s the rush? Surely is better to wait until the very last minute, that’s just the United Way !

So much about our club is just underwhelming. Preseason games, okay we went and played Levante. And of course, the turnout in Germany yesterday was spectacular. (with Little reward.) but look at who Birmingham, Wrexham and others play while we ponce around playing local rivals, scraping the occasional victory and then boasting that we are unbeaten in preseason. Just underwhelming.

No doubt over the next week or so one or two will come in but who will go out? You can’t blame anybody, especially not Hamer that’s what happens in football.

But is such a disappointment after the first promotion and the football and flair that was on offer. Now we seem to have no Plan B and plan A is pretty rubbish to start with.

Where is the second player that Wilder publicly said was coming through the door two weeks ago? Where is Phillips? Where are all the other players? so obviously needed Why are the owners so damn quiet. Can anybody actually coach in this club, do our players get any better? Why has Zatterstrom not improved he’s played for Sweden for fuck sake and we only have one centre back!

We are in danger or just being another ex Premier League club that gets squashed below so many others like QPR, like Stoke City like Swansea and many others. Anybody that thinks we have any chance of getting promoted this season really is, in my opinion in fantasy land. Many Unitedites, when we got relegated said the championship was much better anyway, good, because that’s where we are likely to be for an age unless the club has a serious makeover. Thank god at least we will be above Wednesday.

I will try again to get into Rugby League, follow the 49ers and try other random sports, but unfortunately after 60+ years I’m stuck with them, it’s part of me there nothing I can do about it and deep down that’s good enough for me. But please can we at least play a better brand of football to compensate for the likely disappointments ahead.
Cheers for that, a long read, but i've come away from it wondering what you were expecting and what you think we are now? I'll be honest, I'm expecting slightly better than I was at this time last season. I never bought into what we did last summer and sadly it all fell apart too predictably.

This summer has been very quiet so far, frustrating if you let it get that way, but I expect some business will be done in the coming weeks. Again, too slow for really getting the preparations for the new season completed before our first game, but it seems to be the way football and particularly the Blades operate now. Its a terrible way to prepare, but its the way we prepare nevertheless.

We will undoubtedly be a midtable side this season. it will be dull, it will be mediocre and it will be a long season.

For those who've renewed, fair play and support the lads, its become less of a priority in my life now, i'm not personally around to see games and I can't really buy into what the owners have done with their minimalist approach.

Football as a whole has become less exciting and interesting, it peaked a few years back, but even watching footballs showcase, the World Cup, there wasn't that many games which really grabbed your attention, the football is pretty dull and negative, such is the reward at stake.

United though, aren't a great watch, theres been mistakes made and we're in the position we're in because of these mistakes and the inability to move the football club forwards. We had a good few years and i have some great memories of the relative success we had.

I'm going to sit back and relax when watching the games on the box this season, similar to my approach to England, whom i also don't feel the same connection too anymore. but i chilled out and just enjoyed following with low expectations. United will be the same.

Whether we like it or not, we're a mediocre team, with decent support and a lovely kit. I was wishing I was in Bochum yesterday instead of working, the area is my old stomping ground and the Blades that went over looked like they were having a great time.

I can't offer any advice but just don't expect too much this season. Who knows, with a couple of decent signings we might do alright.

I'd like to see more positivity and connection around the club, but don't really want to see major upheavals again for a while as it seems we rarely have a settled summer.

Up the Blades and lets see how we do in the next few weeks and months.

Your boring me, you must be one of wilders fan boys because he bangs his chest in pub singing about sausage rohl
You may not like Wilder, that's your prerogative and of course you can post what you want within the rules, but what is the real benefit for posting stuff like this?

Not really been entertained much by United since Iliman truth be told. 23/24 (Down from day one), 24/25 (Huge letdown), 25/26 (Wasteful rubbish mostly). I do feel like this season however we are going into it with much lower expectations than perhaps we have had recently, maybe the lowest hype since some of our League One campaigns. And in an odd way I'm finding that difference something to engage with. It at least leaves room for a surprise.

Don’t particularly dislike wilder in my opinion his football has become a hard watch and can do no wrong in some people eyes.
Ok, thats fair on Wilders football.
But i don't think many people have actually said he can do no wrong.

Belittling people for not disliking his brand of football or his antics as much as you though doesn't seem to have any benefit on here.

There was a little purple patch last season after stuffing pigs 0-3 that was entertaining…attacking football and goals for a month or so..then we went back into our shells maybe when we thought we had a sniff of the play offs? 🤔

From November to February we played well at home. We had some great results and performances, Brum, Stoke
and Leicester home and away, Portsmouth, sw, Ipswich. It just died after that.

Posted on or off for about 15 years. See exactly the same post every summer. Some fans fall out of the habit and new ones take their place. Only consistent thing is the moaning.

Wilder last season essentially said the squad was crap. Many fans were saying nobody could have done anything with it.

Right now the squad currently worse than last season. We could of course sign 4 or 5 players in the next 2 weeks and everything looks positive but It's obvious why people are apathetic about the upcoming season at the moment
He also said the players were in for a tough pre season. Id like to reserve judgement until we see how we fare against Brum opening weekend. We look off it to me early days but im not hopeful.

I watched the highlights of Villa v Blades covid season Eagan sent off early. We were not very good but if you have 5 mins watch the build up play for our penalty. Id forgot we could move the ball so quickly. Struggling to see any football like this by the Blades currently. Slow turged odd wonder ball from Gus. We are miles off it in my opinion.

“I must not make this post too long”, so what went wrong ?🤪

We are Sheffield United supporters. In our history its a long way off that we support out side to win. I am not even that old.

I keep speaking to non blades about my bike ride for George Baldock foundation and trying to explain why I am doing it doesnt always make sense.

But the best way I can sum it up is that we want our team to make us proud. George was a great example of that.

I cant think of many times last season that I felt that, I remember our away fans at Charlton just didn't stop singing that second half. Not because we were winning, but because those players fought for that shirt.

Who ever starts against Birmingham, we owe it to them to support them. And they owe it to us to represent that shirt in the best way they can.

We know we dont have money to be throwing around, we know we arent going to expect huge numbers of signings.

Maybe we will sign some more, maybe we won't.

If every player ran, tackled, battled and gave 100%, I'd have no complaints regardless of the outcome. Sadly this United side is one of the softest in a long while, we're gutless, we have no real characters or leaders and we're a hard watch. This summer, I was hoping we'd have a total revamp like Wilder suggested late into last season, that hasn't happened. Last summer's disastrous recruitment has meant we're stuck with dross in most areas of the pitch. We've sold one of our best young (and one of the few entertaining) players to a division rival and Peck, Hamer will inevitably follow. This doesn't seem to translate to a challenge for promotion or even play-offs. It stinks of lower mid-table at the very best. I'll still go to as many matches as I possibly can, but I'm not optimistic about the future currently.

Wednesday have gone down, lost the one good player they had, and lost their pre season games 15-3 on aggregate.
But, because they have a new badge the fanbase will be arrogant, excited, and ready to launch HMS Piss The Lague.

We are soooooo different 😅

I’m fascinated how two sets of supporters from the same city can be polar opposites and so different.

For the older fans …. Has it always been the case? Have they always been so delusional? And have our lot always been glass 3/4’s empty!?

I’m in my 60’s and the answer is categorically ‘yes’….

Wednesday fans have always thought they are bigger than they are - they were intolerable in the 90’s when they were at their best….. but even going back to their demise in the 70’s they always claimed to be a ‘big’ club who deserved to be in the top tier.

Whereas as a Blade, we sort of just got on with it ….never paid a lot of fuss of attendances…. But yes…. Never really thought we deserved to always be in the top tier. Your 1/2 full v 1/2 empty analogy is a good one…..

Wednesday fans - glass 1/2 full - over optimistic
Blades fans - glass 1/2 empty - over pessimistic

'People bang on about Cannon and Campbell being crap but they get naff all service just feeding off scraps'

Agreed, but this problem is compounded by the fact that they are actually crap.
To stand any chance of promotion you need a couple of 20-25 goal scorers.
Don’t think Cannon and Campbell are going to do it. They’ll be lucky to reach double figures.
Ergo we’ve zero chance of promotion this season.

If they taught philosophy in schools then people might be more content with reality, rather than constantly searching for a scapegoat to blame for life's 'disappointments'.
Nice one. Let’s add basic mechanics and how to balance a cheque book onto that.

I was talking to a group of lads - 2 x Hull City fans, 1 x Gillingham fan, 1 x Leeds fan, 1 x Stoke fan - the other day.

I showed them our current squad and all bar one of the Hull fans thought it was a really strong squad. Granted Hamer and Burrows could leave us making it weaker but if you look at our squad on paper, it’s actually not bad at all. Of course, GaMeS aReNT pLaYED oN pApER…..so what’s the reason for the negativity?

WILDER.
From the 2021-22 season onwards, Jokanovic, Hecky, Wilder, Selles, Wilder, all underachieved with the players/squads they had.

Each one of those seasons should have been better, but whether it was the manager's tactics or the board's decisions, we were held back and far worse than the sum of the parts.

Jokanovic - perfect time to evolve but the board massively restricted him and he was unable to make his mark. Expectations were high but he was lumbered with Robbo, Fleck, Burke, Stevens, Brewster, a non- scoring Mcburnie etc and a team that were stuck in an ineffective 352 system that didn't work while trying to transform it in to a 4231. Given time I think he would have turned it around but then the board got rid and announced Hecky along with a story about it being the plan all along?!

Hecky - our attack consisted of Ndiaye, MGW, Mousset, Berge, Mcburnie, Sharp, Mcgoldrick, and back to their familiar system but still couldn't get us over the line, and we still look massive vulnerable through the middle which followed on to the promotion season. I don't remember us ever looking particularly good, and we were nowhere near Burnley's level. Fortunately Ndiaye, Mcatee, Berge, Mcburnie, Ahmedhodzic were good enough to get us over the line.

The premier league season was an utter embarrassment but I still don't think out team was as bad as the output. Unfortunately when you choose to play Robbo, Lowe, alongside slow Egan, decide Luke Fucking Thomas is the answer, then make ridiculous decisions such as the one to sub Bogle at half time against Newcastle when he AND Ahmedhodzic are struggling together against Anthony Gordon causing a humiliating defeat at home which completely ruined any chance that season (we were relatively competitive up until that game), then the manager is the issue. They all gave up after that game and we spent the season getting hammered weekly. A half decent manager would have at least got us putting up a fight.

We followed that up with a 92 point season yet the performances warranted a 60 point season. Wilder will cling on to this forever, despite the fact that last season's performances were exactly the same we just didn't get the luck we had the previous year and all the results were absolutely justified.

I didn't mean this to be a long response and now I'm pissed off after looking through teamsheets that includes Robinson, Thomas, Larouci, Fleck and a completely disinterested Mcatee.
