Ismaila Coulibaly

Orange card and sin bins would probably work, though can't see it happening unfortunately, too revolutionary.
Another option would be to broaden the definition of denying a goal scoring opportunity.

An obvious goalscoring opportunity doesn't need to be a perceived guaranteed goal.
Sin bins are a decent deterrent, and this should be combined with a similar rule that rugby has - the free kick can be taken in line with the foul but anywhere the length of the pitch. The main issue is whether you can clearly define a cynical foul from a genuine attempt to win the ball, but considering how over complicated off sides and VAR are I'm sure they can come up with something.

His best game last night and unlucky not to score. Hit post and forced the save of the night from their goalkeeper. He's not up to speed yet and was knackered after 80 minutes but he brings something different to our midfield the ability to go past players and arrive late in the box. It was noticeable in the second half the applause he got from the bench running back to get in a tackle. He linked up well with Arblaster in moving the ball quickly again something we have been missing in the middle of the park. He caused concern to Burton when he ran at them with the ball forcing them to blatantly foul him.

He's not starting material yet and still has a lot to learn about the pace of the game in the championship but the signs are promising and he has the potential to provide a goal threat from midfield something we've been missing.

I've been a huge critic of the flat midfield 3 because of a pedestrian build up play. Yet it can work when you have players like Coulibaly and Arblaster who run direct at the opposition and move the ball at speed. They're not ready yet so I'll keep championing the need for us to start with 3-4-2-1 at Watford.

Keep him around for me.

Especially as we are very light with Doyle injured, arblaster untested and Berge uncertainty around if he’ll be around.

Let’s see what he can do.

I think coulibaly has the potential to be a better lundstram. Box to box, scoring threat but also a good tackler, more skilful and a better athlete. I always thought our downfall was the lack of athleticism in midfield. It felt like as soon as the opposition get past our midfielders there’s no chance we catch up. I’d say the same even with berge as despite how strong and quick he is, his tackling ability isn’t his stronger element

Offer a new deal, have both him and Arblaster in the first team squad and have them coming on for last 15-20 mins to give us more legs if needed. Flecks starting spot is hugely vulnerable and if Doyle is out longer than anticipated they could make a play early, even between them.
For those two I’m not sure there’s lots for them to learn in L1 or below but we need to acknowledge they both have a lot of development to do, and we can’t afford a lot of mistake while they learn. Ease them in slowly.

Second half he ran on the ball and it was clear his marker couldn't keep up so he grabbed his shirt and pulled him down. Although meaninglessly booked, I'm sure that player was praised, as he "took one for the team". We do this ourselves of course, and I think Hecky criticised individuals when they failed to do this on at least one occasion last season.

But it is really time to punish these destructive and entertainment-killing fouls. A yellow card is not enough. I suggest an immediate one match suspension following this type of ugly and cynical foul. It may at least force players to think again.

Manchester City base their gameplay largely around this tactic. Fernandinho in particular would just leg people up on the halfway line half a dozen times a match, but they'd usually get away with it because Pep has the reputation of a football purist.

Getting a bit off topic, but I'd love for a real deterrent against diving and time wasting introduced.

Firstly, any player needing treatment on the pitch should spend the same amount of time on the sidelines after treatment, or be immediately substituted.

The 6 second rule for goalkeepers should be properly enforced, and a similar rule be introduced for throw-ins, free kicks and corners.

Yellow cards for time wasting should be given out more often, if necessary. Currently players are given far too many chances, and players already on a caution seem to have an immunity to another yellow: a couple of second yellows for time wasting would send the message.

Finally, there should be a diving committee: a board that analyse instances of alleged diving. If a player wins a free kick or penalty and video evidence shows that there was no contact, or the player manipulated the referee; they get a ban. Maybe just a 1 game ban, with more severe punishments for repeat offenders.

Ultimately, I'd like to completely sack off the referees watches, and the arbitrary added time, and replace it with an American style stopwatch. When the ball is in play, the clock counts. When it's out, it freezes.

None of that will ever happen of course, part of the reason I'm completely fed up with the game.

On your last point, agree totally. I've been arguing for years with anyone who would listen for non ref timekeeping much like in rugby, ball not in active play then clock stops. I think this would help mitigate your other points about on field injuries and throw ins, just stop the clock...my other bugbear is getting the refs miked up, sooner refs have to explain decisions and players realised they can be heard live the better the game will become for me.

...And another thing. Absolutely no bad mouthing or arguing with referees. It should be like ruby. The captain should be allowed to ask the referee why he gave a particular decision but the ref's decision is final and the players have to accept it. (subject to VAR of course) Any player arguing or giving back chat should receive a yellow card or be sin binned for 10 minutes. End of. Apart from the ethics of the game the sight of senior international players arguing with referees on TV sets a terrible example for young people starting to play football at school or local clubs.

Heck must not be overly impressed with him if he's talking about him in terms of potentially loaning him out. Must see him as behind Fleck & Osborn and maybe even Arblaster.

I haven't seen him play properly yet but must admit all the comments I've read about Coulibaly - from PH and from reporters having watched matches - doesn't fill me with confidence. It's unfair to expect someone playing for a new team in a new country (with a new language, I'm guessing) to hit the ground running but it sounds like he's quite a way off. The very good players can sometimes transcend that but it seems as though he isn't one of those. If it is a language thing, can totally see why PH wants him sticking around as presumably the best place to adapt will be with the club. Not abroad and not to a lower league club where it could so easily go wrong.

I get the impression that the club see lots of potential in him and he is better than when he arrived but has some distance to go before he becomes a regular. He will subsequently be on the bench at best whilst he continues to improve, this scenario will be revisited on a regular basis and he will be loaned out if player and club see it as a viable option.
Seemingly a number of clubs interested.

I only saw him against Scunthorpe but very much looked like a confidence player. Also looked like he could switch it on when he wanted to but wasn’t consistent over the 90.

Long way to go based on that performance … subs bench at best for last 20mins.

Not yet ready to be relied upon.

Sounds like most of our current first team midfield performances

Why judge a young player on different standards than experienced players. From the admittedly few games I saw last season players like Fleck and Osborne were very inconsistent and offered little to the team. Coulibaly deserves a run of 5 games before you can really judge him. Also read Heckinbottom didn’t rate Radic. He’s going to a Bundesliga club, if you can play in Bundesliga you can definitely play in the EFL. Maybe something’s wrong with his judgement of players, especially foreign players.

Ollie Burke plays for werder Bremen ffs, the standard at the bottom end of the bundesliga is about mid table champ.

He's not ready to start yet but has the ability to score goals from a deep lying midfield position. He's a box to box midfield player 6 foot plus good in the air and physically strong and although right footed can play down the left. We've been crying out for players like this for the last few seasons. Whether he can adapt to the championship remains to be seen. He's only 21 but he showed along with Arblaster against Burton that he can go past players that enables the team to get up the pitch quickly.

All players want more game time I hope his agent is not in his ear. He will be an asset from the bench to start with and has to be part of the match day squad for me as he brings something different. Its too early to be making decisions he should be given an opportunity to be tested first.

I can see the merit in sending the lad out on loan until January so that he gets regular game time in English football and works on his positional play. He's obviously got potential and no little ability, it's just that his positional play is behind the other lads midfield who have been here a while and who have played in the football league most of their careers. It sounds like PH rates him but needs the hard corners knocked off him so that his game is more polished and in tune with the English game. Alternatively, if he doesn't go out then he can spend time with the coaching team on the training ground getting up to speed. He's still only a young lad so he doesn't necessarily need a breakthrough this season. If he puts in the hard yards, takes in board the information and is patient, I can see him being involved in the second part of this season.

It might be an issue of what we want out of him purple last season we played with a deep playmaker in Norwood using long passing range to spray the ball to the flanks and find either the advanced fullback or centreback. Alongside the we had Berge pushed right up on the right to the point where he was almost a second 10 behind the striker. On the left we then deployed Fleck/Osborn as the busy player in midfield to buzz around and break things up and then try and spring us forward carrying the ball.

If I were to guess I’d guess we want him to be that type of player and maybe occupy the role Fleck and Osborn occupied. I think he’s had a decent pre season and improved game on game but if I were to pick something he could work on it would be to improve his work rate at the moment to help him cope with the intensity he’ll face but like I say he’s improving game after game. He’s also competing with one of our youngsters Arblaster who has had himself a very impressive preseason.

Agree with this and he may initially have to be patient but getting chances with only Fleck and Osborn ahead of him in the pecking order isn't an impossibility.

If he’s not willing to be patient then stuff him, if he’s out of the team for a reason (others are playing well, or he’s not doing it in training) then he’ll have to suck it up.

If the others aren’t doing it, and he isn’t getting a chance I totally understand why he’d get the face on. He’s just played a decent standard for 3 years.

The standard of a lot of Bundesliga is poor. The league was a bit of a running joke for years and aside from 5 or 6 teams there's very little to shout about. Those scrapping around at the bottom would struggle to make an impression in the Championship.

Coulibaly will get his chance anyway, look at how many games we have in such a short space of time. He obviously has to earn a place but I'd be surprised if he doesn't play in the cup. Wouldn't be at all surprised if Hecky wasn't tempering expectations a little with his comments anyway - he's come here with an established reputation despite only really playing well for 6 months in a league that's entirely different to ours. He's going to need time to adjust.
