Is Simonsen the worst Goalie since Derek Richardson?

McCalister was a fine keeper, once saw him save 2 penalties at Derby, we still lost though. He wasnt the same after he broke his leg. Was it Summerbee or the little fat b*****d Franny Lee that did it I think it was Lee but not too sure

According to our old man (although he's happy to be proven wrong) he believes it was Rodney Marsh...apparently Summerbee tried to carry him off but couldn't,and was berating the St Johns for dragging there heels, when he realised how bad the break was. It's said he did'nt speak to Marsh for ages after that because of him doing what he did.

It was Rodney Marsh. Really nasty 'foot in' as Mac came out off his line and it broke his leg just below the knee as I remember.

Andy Goram? Which one?

I'll get me coat ...

I agree with your old man 100%. Tommo was so good he was up there with the players at the top of Darren's list if it hadn't been for Marsh's deliberate stomp. I've carried a grudge against Marsh ever since and was chuffed when Sky sacked him. Sadly Tommo was never the same again afterwards but I'd rate him as the best goalie we had between Hodgy and Tracey before he broke his leg.

My dad was always a big fan of McAlister's. There was a photo of Marsh going in on him studs up in the next programme.

I reckon you're all missing the obvious worst EVER. OK he was a loanee and only played a handful of games. Fellow Blades I give you the infamous NICKY JOHNS !!!!!!

I agree Johns was crap but (a) he only played 2 games (and conceded 6 goals in them) and (b) he played in 1978.

what about tom Mcallister, and the one with the gonk, no hope.

Both pre-date 1980.

I may be misguided, but didn't Nicky Johns play in that sequence of losing 0-5,1-5,1-5? Then I seem to remember a 3-2 victory where we somehow managed to win despite Mr Johns trying to gift the opposition goals?

i dont think simmo is the worst keeper we have ever had but he is certainly costing us too many points

Jim Brown was in goal for that 5 goal sequence:

7/1/78 H Arsenal (FAC) L0-5
14/1/78 H Bolton L1-5
21//1/78 A Sunderland L1-5

The joke going the rounds was "what's the time?" "Five past Brown".

The 3-2 victory was over Sunderland on 7/10/78. There's a vid of it here.

Johns' dodgy keeping can be seen early on, followed by 3 great goals from United (Anderson's 2nd came 2nd in the MOTD goal of the season competition that year). And look at the perm on Peter Anderson....

For some reason I was in the BL upper for that Sunderland match. The Anderson goal looked very impressive from up there, but the keeper looked dodgy from the 1st minute. I was sat with my Dad who was convinced that he'd drop another bollock before full-time to let them equalise.

If we go back to the time I first started watching and list the keepers, Tom McAllister would be right at the top. Before Marsh broke his leg so badly he was as good as anybody around (including Clemence and Shilton) and would've been first choice for Scotland for years. Jim Brown wasn't bad, John Hope was pretty dodgy and as we are talking about keepers with dodgy eyes then John Connaughton has to be mentioned.

Blimey...Peter Anderson!! He scored some crackers that season.....sadly not enough!!
I was in the BLUT, had a season ticket up there for years until it was given over to away fans.
Richard Harwood, that must have been just about his 1 and only game for us.

I think Harwood played in the next 2 games - the 4-1 League Cup defeat at home to Leeds (which was another disaster for Johns and his last appearance; also TC got one of Leeds' goals) and the 1-1 draw at Millwall and then managed a solitary sub appearance at home to Cardiff in December.

After that he didn't play a first team game again, though he remained on our books until summer 1980.

Go on then, keepers of the 70's - from 69-70 to 78-79 in order

1. Brown
2. McAlister
3. Hope
4. Conroy
5. Hodgkinson (way past his best by then)
6. Crawford
7. Connaughton
8. Johns

The best coach in the world can coach anyone but you could never turn a donkey into a race horse. If what you start with is shit then you are going to end up with shit.

Simmo is not the only thing that needs sorting but it would be the place to start, we need pace up front as well

we also need money to sign these players ,rumours abound on bladesmad of mannone and a striker coming in loan
lets hope theyre true

difficult to get a rizla paper between brown and macallister. both top keepers.. however i never reckoned much to hope.. we have been spoiled in retrospect, we've had some fine keepers here over the years

The attendance for that game against Sunderland was declared at 18,873. I think our official capacity at that time was more than 50,000. I'd like to know where the other 31,000 would have fitted in if it had been a sell out!

It was 49,000.

I don't think they cared much about safety in those days!

I actually went to Roker Park for that last 1-5 defeat. Memory of the day was my mate going for a slash at halftime and coming back with his nose all over his face!

Christ , he must have a huge dick if hes broke his nose getting it out for a slash

It was definately Rodney Marsh with a cowardly foot up challenge on Super Mac, I was there and the crowd went nutty about it. Ref didnt even have the sense to send marsh off for it. Ruined Macs career as well as he was never quite the same after it - bad break. He was an excellent keeper and IF my memory serves me correctly, was either just capped or just about to be called up by Scotland. Great shame indeed !! ( I nearly said massive shame then but reallised that Sheffield Wombles weren't involved here at all ) :-)
UTB

Bennett should be higher up, and should still be at the lane instead of playing well for huddersfield.

Yes, Simmo has had more bad games than the other dodgy ones before the then manager dropped or replaced them,

No prizes for guessing my personal choice of the best that we've had. (I'll give you a clue though...he has been decorated by the Queen).

The second best in their time with us is a toss up between Jim Brown and Tom Mc Allister
