in answer to the question, - with no regard to the vastly inflated fees in the OP - yes, Mitchell is doing an outstanding job.I'd say given the type of players he's recommended (young and probably going to improve in value) arguably the best in the league. I think the Evans and Holmes signings had very little to do with Mitchell. If a signing doesn't work out, they're not too difficult to move on as they are young and proven in the league(s) below.

Foxy, when people point out that I'm speaking bollocks or reporting incorrect data - can you reprimand them because I prefer to have a debate where everyone blindly agrees with my incorrect assertions...

I agree.

Anyone disagreeing with me, me, me, me, me, me (sorry, got a little carried away there) is RUINING threads, while discouraging QUALITY posts from QUALITY POSTERS on MY message board.

Harrrumph. I shall have to redouble my efforts to troll long-standing members of the forum, sow division, cultivate mutually antagonistic cliques, and generally impose my (cough) standards on everyone else.

Disclaimer: the incorrectness of my data is in no way caused by the fact that I only ever read the threads that I create, while blindly ignoring anyone else’s because they are of a lesser grade.

Too good for this thread. Please quote on the other one running simultaneously.

THREADS MERGED, PLEASE STAY ON TOPIC PEOPLE.

Mitchell joined us in July 2016 but was probably actually working with our new manager a little before then.

This is a list of signings since that summer when Wilder joined together with estimated or reported transfer fees:

Duffy Free (f)
Hussey (Undislosed-u)
Wilson (defender) (f)
Wright (f)
Fleck (f)
O'Connell (u)
Clarke (u)
Moore (u/ 500k)
Lavery (u)
Reece-Brown (f)
Carruthers (u)
Lafferty (u)
Hanson (u)
Baldock (650k)
C.Evans (500k)
Stevens (700k)
Vickers loan
Thomas (290k)
Stearman (961k)
Lundstram (500k)
Donaldson (50k)
Heneghan (300k)
L.Evans (700k)
Holmes ( u)
Leonard (700k)
Blackman loan
Wilson loan.

I reckon Duffy and Clarke were Knill's ex-players. Holnes- ex- Wilder.

How is Mitchell doing to date in your opinion?

Crucial appointment is Head Scout.

I always say a manager is as good as hos No.2 and equally his Head Scout.

Groundsman next for a bit of scrutiny I reckon?

Ok. Stevens was a free transfer. Wilder said that no signing had cost more than Simon Moore last season at 300k.To me this shows how well Mitchell did last season. This will help to put prices on your undisclosed fees. He laughed at the interviewer who suggested 500k was paid for Evans this season. That may have been the figure if we were promoted and won the FA Cup etc. Lundstram cost 800k (also revealed in an interview.) Oh, and Knill and Wilder rated Lundstram and Ollie Watkins as the best talents below the championship. This was revealed by Knill in an interview. Watkins went to Brentford for a seven figure fee. We obviously couldn't afford him.Now I'll turn my sarcasm detector back on.

Issue I think we have is that most of the good players have played under Wilder or Knill. Which has given us a very strong core.

The other players have been very hit and miss. He has to improve or he will forever be a league one scout. Players like Leonard / Heneghan / Wilson / Thomas cannot he signed for us in the championship.

So, on topic.

Our signings have reflected our budget and in January our manager, he's one of our own, was delighted with his recruitment.

It did not take us into the play-offs but let's get real and recognise we were recruiting for serious improvement not instant promotion.

Those contracted January recruits will be towers of strength next season no doubt.

Summer recruitment can be more specific now that the squad is as strong as it is now.

The great start to the season has worked against Mitchell and the manager in some ways. Elevated expectations are dangerous for all parties. One step at a time Blades.

This would've made a great OP.

Le Shark. Macro specials and a horrible cheap rip off of La Coste.

Coincidently similar to what Wilder has to shop for - which makes his recruitment record even better!

#OnTopicShark
Wilder is like a shark sniffing round the carcasses of Oxford, Charlton and Southend preying on their prime cuts and sending their seasons off topic.

All the facts were brought to you by WWF and sponsored by BTL. :)

In all seriousness, my guess is that he’s doing more than a fine job with the tools at his disposal.

Woody, I'm off to bed now and keeping my fingers crossed that the Bogeyman doesn't come and get me.

I'd much prefer the tooth fairy.

I am quite surprised that Wilder has signed that many people to be honest. There aren't many that I'd say are absolute shite, there are some who should be pushing for a first team starting place and still have a lot to prove and there are others who were gambles that probably haven't paid off and now need jettisoning to ply their trade in Scotland or Leagues 1 and 2.

The best thing for me is that there are some signings on the list who were signed for bugger all and have made a huge impact on both last season and this. We haven't a manager (or scout) who has provided with this for a long time.

In answer to WWF it's a bit like my school reports "very capable and shows brilliance at times, but could do better", consequently in later life I rarely show anything but brilliance.

It was doomed from the start, thanks to the title.

Missed out the 'good' that's all.

Made all the difference I suppose. Interesting that the invitation to debate without a lead opinion in the o.p. aroused so much suspicion. Shan't do that again. It was the drop of blood in the water for the sharks to feed on, bless.

I am sorry the thread never got going. It is an interesting topic and one of the key areas for any management team to make a difference.

There is the prince's view that we are too limited geographically.

My view is that we have signed too many similar-type midfielders and left ourselves without cover in certain areas, notably striker, LWB and centre back. We just missed out on Cole in the JTW, but was he the man either?

The acid test is the fact we have a very strong bench these days and yet so many on there who can't change games; conversely none weaken us either.

Recruitment next season can be focused on real quality in 3, maybe 4 positions. The 3 younger players signed in January can all do well next season. Leonard and Holmes are quality players in the right conditions. January signings are always chancy as regards bedding in soon enough.

Building a squad is incremental. In the first year the manager brings in some players he knows well. After that he relies on his scout to really dig into the market and produce some unpolished jewels, essentially hopefuls rather than certainties on a budget like ours.

Next summer we will mot move many out. Carruthers, Hanson and a couple more will find clubs though we may have to sweeten the deals somewhat. Then focus on specialists with that little something that differentiates them - pace, size, goals, crossing ability.

We might even change system. Our current squad lends itself to a change and that's one criticism of the past two years when we had a defined system to man and didn't quite pull it off in key areas.

Of the 27 players listed in the OP, how many are currently (last 6 months only), decent goalscorers who still scare the opposition?.

Therein lies the problem.

QED.
