Is Chris Porter now a Blades Legend?

I think the term 'Cult hero' may be more appropriate.

He goes into the category with: Ehiogu, Allison, Shipperley etc

Hardly can be in the same category as: Deane, Currie, Woodward now can he?!

Ive always thought the flack he takes is overly harsh.

There are many things I'd describe him as before I got to the term 'clinical' but for somebody who isn't usually the most calm infront of goal he's a very assured and reliable kicker of pennos.

Fate loves a trier. Just look at Peter Crouch. Played loads of games for England, played at the top level for however long, married to a model. Couldn't make it up could ya!

Porter has had some horrific injuries to overcome , from which some never return ,maybe , just maybe hes getting back to where he was before the injuries , hope so

yes,i took some bollocks to stand in front of the kop and slot that in so calmley.
I take my hat of to the bloke for his efforts, but it seems he has never had a regular strike partner to feed.
WE STILL NEED ANOTHER STRIKER THOUGH PRINCE BOBAR.

He's certainly the player for a big game. Always seems to do well on the big occassions.

There was a situation in the first half that was a bit similar to Porter's last goal.

Through regaining possession high up and some good play and movement we've managed to make Forest lose a bit of organisation. When Murphy runs into the box, he's facing a centre half, not the right back (Halford).

His low cross beats the first man, the second man, but is cleared by the third. During Murphy's run, Baxter is standing still. As he's not very closely marked he probably thinks he's in a decent position to receive the ball. But even if Murphy had played it towards him, his lack of movement means the third defender would probably have blocked his effort.

Ideally I'd want a midfielder (Scougall) to try get into Baxter's position, and I'd want Baxter to make a run to get in between the second and third defender...

  • to make a Porter type finish
  • to open up space for an onrunning midfielder (Scougall)
  • to help prevent the defenders from blocking Scougall if Murphy picks him out

Some of Baxter's play as a striker is very good, but his lack of (natural/striker's) movement in the box means he's struggling to get on the end of things.

How can you mention Porter in the same breath as Shipperley ?
I will give him credit for taking the pen but I certainly wouldnt have started him
And to the OP Porter will never be a Blades legend

He fucking buried that penalty. He's not done much this season, but that's still more than most of our players have achieved.

Porter makes runs and gets in positions I have always said it. The fact we have not played wingers hasn't helped him, the fact that he hasn't been clinical enough has also been another failing. He wont bang in 20 goals a season no matter what level he is playing at but I do think he adds more as a striker than Baxter does.

When playing alone up front he can't win. He isn't quick enough to knock the ball past a man and beat him so he has to hold the ball and wait for the team to join him, which is frustrating. It is better now we have Murphy and Scougall actually looking like they have a yard of pace, but he needs some support.

Porter up top with someone like Kabba in his day is the ideal partnership. He isn't the greatest but he is the best we have at this shithole level we are at. He has scored a good goal against Premiership opposition and now banged 2 in 5 minutes against Championship opposition, perhaps some will get off his case a little but I doubt it.

Appears to me that Clough knows what he is doing with the team, bringing good players in while shoring up the back line.

and there's the rub.

We aren't going to get a striker, at this level, that creates (and scores) his own chances. He's plugged the biggest gaps at the back (i.e. the two full backs) and he's found out how to make his wingers perform. We can create chances now and, nice as a clinical finisher would be, that gives us a much better chance of actually scoring than pre January.

If Chris Porter is a legend then I really do support the wrong team. 11 goals in 72 Games is not a legends goals to games ratio.

if he scores a last minute winner against cov on the last day to keep us up then yes he is a legend. Anyway no mention of Murphy being a legend then???

He's certainly the player for a big game. Always seems to do well on the big occassions.

Two years ago ahead of the second play-off game against Stevenage someone wrote on here that Simmonsen had a better chance of scoring for United than Porter. However, It was Porter who scored the goal that took us to Wembley. Let's hope he'll do it again.

Baxter receives the ball, turns / beats a man and passes it forward (for midfielders running beyond) very quickly and effectively. He's got a good footballing brain, can pick a good pass and I think he contributes a lot to our counter attacking style. He also holds the ball up well and takes a decent set piece.

He's still my first choice by a country mile.
