Very sad news, RIP Steve.

Valiant effort in the season he took over, the amazing games vs Coventry and came close against an excellent Sunderland side in the playoffs.

Don Hutchison far right. If we’d have kept that side together, who knows? Thanks for the memories Steve, that Coventry quarter final stays long in my memory.
I'm not sure if Hutchison was far right but I know he's a little annoyed about the lack of government action on small boat migrant crossings

Sad to hear that Steve has passed. Lived opposite as a kid growing up. Spent many a happy hour playing football and cricket with Steve and his Brother for hours on end on the Littledale. There was always plenty of lads to make a game. You never got past him with the ball even back then. RIP Steve.

Don was a great player for us, had flair and skill.
Also looks like superstar striker Ian Rush on the right hand side of that pic.

I recognise that big nose anywhere but he was a total failure here.

Loved watching Don Hutchison, my favourite Midfielder whilst watching The Blades. Superb passer, great reader of the game, cool under pressure. Just seemed to have time on the ball, a skill a hell of a lot harder than it looks, Gordon Cowens, Stuart McCall, Gary Speed the same.

Agree….Don Hutchison was one of my favourites too, a strong contender to get into my top 10 favourite Blades players since the late 70’s.

He had an elegant/ graceful running style and always seemed to have time on the ball. Also calm under pressure and always looking to pass the ball to our player, instead of lumping it.

Yeh he was what they call a “proper footballer”.

Really sad news. Was part of the 1988-89 squad that got promotion from Division Three (the first season that I really followed as a proper fan). I remember him scoring a dreadful own goal away at Southend (a game where our fans were moaning and fighting amongst themselves, despite us thinking that this is a new phenomenon). But he did his bit to get us promoted in one of my favourite ever teams.

He was brilliant value in interviews, particularly when he was caretaker manager. Always seemed like a man who truly appreciated being involved as a football man.

RIP, Tommo.
I thought the Southend fighting was the game in October 95, towards the end of the Bassett days?

Tommo scored at Northampton, in a vital win, just as the Hillsborough disaster was unfolding. Always remember telling my dad, and the radio on in the background, as the horrors of the day became real.

Great man.

There was definitely a bad atmosphere at the 1988 Southend game (“chucked promotion away”, “incompetent”, etc.). I didn’t go to the one in 1995, but heard that one was horrible.

I remember that Northampton game, but forgot that Steve Thompson scored. One incident that I recall vividly was Martin Pike smashing a clearance straight into the face of a disabled fan by the side of the pitch. The game had to stop for a while for the fan to get treatment and Pikey looked utterly distraught. It seemed like that was the big news of the day until we started to hear about Hillsborough.
