Very sad news, RIP Steve.

Valiant effort in the season he took over, the amazing games vs Coventry and came close against an excellent Sunderland side in the playoffs.

Saw this earlier on twitter. Really sad but I'm going to remember him as a top bloke from how he came across and a proper Blade. He was in charge for the brilliant cup run. Re-signed Chris Wilder and signed Paul Devlin.

On a lighter note I'm sure I read somewhere that when we got promoted under Harry in 1989 from div 3 Tommo played a fair bit and in the 1989 preseason the team were at Abbeydale watching Yorkshire play cricket. Tommo spots Mark Morris driving into the car park and talking to Harry.

Tommo goes up to Harry and asks about Morris who was a centre half of course, like Tommo.

"Harry, that's Mark Morris, right"?

Harry responds "Yes, he's coming to replace you and we're giving you a free transfer back to Lincoln"! 😂

Cracked me up reading that! I hope this story made a few smile on a sad day

I knew Tommo, initially through my old PE teacher, Rick Jones, who was a close friend. He was ‘off the Manor’ and made the absolute most of his ability and lived his best life - playing for and managing his beloved Blades.

He was a colourful character, never lost sight of his upbringing and always had a humorous story to tell. One of his proudest moments was leading Charlton out, as skipper, at Anfield. He was pumped with adrenaline as he marched through the tunnel, looking up at the ‘Welcome to Anfield’ before sprinting out onto the hallowed turf, savouring the moment. Unbeknown to him his teammates had conspired to stop at the tunnel entrance, leaving him to run out onto the pitch alone. He saw the funny side of it as he feigned some stretching exercises while they pissed themselves.

I last saw Tommo at a mutual friend’s funeral a few years ago. In good form as always. RIP.

Really sad news. Was part of the 1988-89 squad that got promotion from Division Three (the first season that I really followed as a proper fan). I remember him scoring a dreadful own goal away at Southend (a game where our fans were moaning and fighting amongst themselves, despite us thinking that this is a new phenomenon). But he did his bit to get us promoted in one of my favourite ever teams.

He was brilliant value in interviews, particularly when he was caretaker manager. Always seemed like a man who truly appreciated being involved as a football man.

RIP, Tommo.

In charge for the Coventry quarter final which is a huge match in our history , RIP TOMMO

Remember his own goal away at Norwich in the FA Cup 5th round tie at Carrow Road when they were top of the old first division and us a thirds division team on the rise. What a game we gave them that day with about 6000 Blades giving us tremendous backing. Tommo was unfortunate with the OG and was a bit of a 'weak link' as he was not the quickest shall we say, but he was tremendous that day along with Stan the Man and the rest.

He came into steady us as caretaker manager when we needed a steady Eddie Blades man type, and again he more than delivered. A genuine, nice, funny, whole hearted footballing man. A genuine Blades lad as well. The world is a poorer place without Tommo today. Fly high Tommo. Remembered with affection.

RIP. Thommo before he played for the Blades Thommo used to give the local football team I played for a fitness work out on a Tuesday evening. It was at Thornbridge school. I can say without doubt it was the hardest training session I'd done. It took my legs a few days to recover. A character who gave his all whether it was on the pitch or doing shuttles with us on Tuesdays.

I think the bit I missed from the above was Tommo asking "when were you planning to tell me this"?

Harry "Now"!

RIP Tommo.

Rick Jones, another good guy taken way too early. Was joint manager at Frecheville during my playing days.

RIP, the Cup Run he managed us through is an enjoyable memory - in particular the unlikely away draw against Coventry against the odds.

Never seen so many fine tributes to an ex Blades' player. Seems like a great guy with the bonus of being a Blade. RIP-rest easy Blade.

Remember him well from the Division Three days. Possibly, the slowest player I've ever seen in a blades shirt, but never shirked a tackle. He and Stan were a classic, barrel chested, thunder thighed, head it and kick it combination common in the late 80's. His time as assistant manager was during quite a dark period in our history, but the team had a never say die attitude, exemplified by that cup run and the performance in the play offs, where we were unlucky to lose to a superior Sunderland side.

RIP
