There's a Carl McHugh who currently plays for Motherwell so probably him?

For me it would be a bit dodgy for a manager to phone up a current teammate of a transfer target (how would Motherwell have viewed that given the bid hadn't been accepted at that point?), and I can't see any link that Wilder might have to McHugh from his playing career to date.

I think there might have been an error on the reporting of this as it's much more likely I'd have thought for him to speak to a former manager or coach, and that it could therefore be Steve Burr's assistant when Heneghan was at Chester, Carl Macauley. The two might know each other from when Wilder managed in the Conference.

Yes, hence the thought that it's possible we might have got the deal done if we'd agreed to pay a little earlier. We can't really tell from what has been published.

If you read down the article Fleetwood upped the price to 1.2 million. It was only as the deadline approached that their price became reasonable.

Where do you get this from? Behind the sofa?

Sat on actually.

But why the delay in coming up from Watford? Why did CW have to sell the club to him again on the phone after he was up at Sheff all weekend and in the stand for the Derby game?

Shieber said in the video the paper work was all done, just needed a signature. All he had to do was get to the lane and sign. He didn't.

He's a 20 year old kid who's been pampered by the footballing system and had probably never had to make a decision in his life. He's probably earning more than half our first team his. Half of him is probably saying go to United, the other half is saying nah why give up the easy life, chuck into the mix an agent who sees an opportunity to make himself richer.. . Then you can see how it happens.

Best thing the footballing system can do is put all these kids back on the YTS scheme, have them cleaning boots of the first team and stacking shelves on the evening to earn an extra few pennies. They might want to put a bit of effort into having a career then

Sinclair was at Baggies up to 14 when he was poached by Liverpool for their academy. He made his debut at 16 (youngest in Liverpool history) against West Brom, much to their displeasure) in a league cup match. After not progressing as quickly as he'd wanted he moved to Watford (supposedly to have a better chance of first team football)

Now it appears that first team football is no where near his priority

Do you mean, the "we're going to give it a go" comments?
I thought that call was to Donaldson after we heard that he was available?

Sinclairs current salary is far bigger than our biggest earner.

Our biggest earner last season was Billy Sharp on 10K a week.
All the data on the internet says Sinclair signed a 4 year contract on £20K a week.

So incredibly he'll earn just over 4 million (set up for life) even though he might have hardly played a game in league football. That's the massive problem in football, PL club are willing to play millions just for potential. In the past you had to produce the results first, the the rewards followed. Now the rewards are paid up front before producing the goods.

I think we've been naive here, and it's probably a lot to do with both the manager and club operating in the lower leagues for the last few years.

It's a very small criticism, but this season is going to be a learning curve. I doubt we'll be in the same situation again. It's just a part of the learning process. We all do it in new job situations. We all learn from it.

Absolute drivel as usual from you

It wasn't Sinclair's fault apparently. This from the Beeb today:

Watford's Jerome Sinclair with a forthright reply to a website forum. "This footage is one-sided and very misleading. I was approached, but nothing was agreed. I am very happy at Watford and am looking forward to the season. Don't believe everything you read or watch!"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/gossip

Not sure who or what he was replying to but do we have a Goebbles propaganda unit at the Lane that faked him ever being at Midland Station?
Poor lad and it sounds like it is our fault again. We could do a whip round and raise a few bob so him and his agent can have a night out at The Ivy to cheer themselves up.

In fairness there could be an element of truth in what he's saying.
He probably means that the clubs agreed and he agreed to come in principle but it's up to his agent to agree his deals and until his agent gives him the green light then it's not agreed.

Sinclair won't know what his agent has been saying to us People say Sinclair should sack his agent but I would have thought his agent will report back a different version of events which is why he's now saying the video gives the wrong impression about what really happened.

Also as already said it's probably not a big deal for Sinclair himself. He's on £20K a week for 4 years (just over 4 million), so in his mind he's hit the jackpot and doesn't have to work again. He was really talented but giving him the rewards up front might mean he's lost his desire.

It's amazing when you think he could now retire from the game, start a business and have a comfortable lifestyle without hardly playing any league football for any club.

To be honest I'm not sure in the long run all this exposure to these transfer dealing is going to benefit United a great deal. Yes we know agents are cunts but there is a danger to bucking the system and exposing the corruption. It's not always a good idea to make enemies.

So just quietly eat shit and let it keep happening?

It's absurd... I find it impossible to see how top clubs can even see paying such wages as beneficial. Clearly coaching of young players is a thousand times better than what it used to be. But they just aren't making it through, probably because the lads don't give a shit. All that investment for nowt. If all the premier league academies were suddenly shut down and all the young players told to find their own way and try and make it, I bet in 5 years time we'd have an really good England team

If they never get the chance to see what life is like and see what their is to lose, how are they ever going to have the motivation to succeed

Fleetwood say it was interesting viewing "From a Sheffield United perspective" and Reeves responds "£75,000 to £1.2 million in 4 hours" the Fleetwood Commercial Manager didn't respond again.

But Wilder appears to point to his agent. Didn't the lad send a message saying all the best for the season? Not the response you expect from someone who has skulked off.

Was he really at the station just waiting to be shafted by his agent......Maybe not?

Great article - must read for all football fans. Just shows the deadline day is for Sky to win viewers and agents to make money - nothing to do with improving the game for clubs, players and managers.
