Good evening all,
Well, the Inter Blades Worldnet weekend didn’t exactly go according to plan. Despite the excellent squad at our disposal and some fantastic football played throughout the tournament, we made a few errors and were punished every time, failed to finish our chances and just didn’t get the rub of the green in general (do I sound like Warnock yet?) ;-)
Having said all that, a massive thanks must go to my squad (Ash Hurst, Ash Cowley, Liam Wasden, Mark Ashton, Robbie "rimmer" Hume, Paul Kemp, Drew Brown, James Tissington, Lee North, Danny Shepherd, Chris Beckett, Dale Weldon, Alex Paramore, Tom Pratt, Paul Hanstock, Chris Beckett, Rich Eldridge, Will Storey, James Kemp, Aaron Trinder, Chris Quinn & Tom "International" McCaig… and me!) who gave it their all and didn’t get any reward. I'm gutted with the results and subsequent early exit, but I'm dead chuffed with some of the performances and football we played, and the attitude and team spirit was fantastic, if we keep that up throughout next season then we’ll do well. It was one of those weekends where absolutely nothing went for us and every mistake was punished which is rare at this level.
Day 1
Inter Blades... 0 Dumbarton... 1
We were very comfortable against Dumbarton (a Scottish Amateur League side, not an IFA one), but didn't get the breaks and one mistake gave them probably their only clear cut chance. We were unable to take our chances at the other end so we started with a defeat.
Inter Blades... 1 Dundee United... 2
James Kemp
This game was even more baffling, Dundee United were a fair side but again I thought we controlled the game. Unfortunately we made a mistake and were punished, then a decent goal with just their second opportunity gave the Scots a 2-0 lead. We somehow missed two open goals in the first half which would have drawn us level, and in the second half we missed several more chances whilst our keeper Ash hardly had anything to do in goal once again. James Kemp scored a great goal after good work down the right but we couldn't grab the equaliser.
Inter Blades... 0 West Ham... 0
This game was obviously going to be the big one especially now we were realistically playing just for pride. West Ham again were a decent side but I thought we had the better of the game and once again missed some really good opportunities to win the match. Nice touch by Gary (West Ham manager) with the pendant with message on the reverse, shows the true spirit of the IFA league.
Friendlies
Inter Blades... 3 Peterborough... 1
Dale Weldon 2
Aaron Trinder
We showed what we could really do in this game with 3 goals in the first half. Peterborough clawed one back but in fairness I thought we could have scored one or two more.
Inter Blades... 1 Brentford... 1
Danny Brown
By this time it was blistering hot so the pace of the game was a bit stop start, we struggled to get going in the heat at first and conceded an early goal but then wasted a few opportunities to draw level. The second half showed an improvement but it just wasn't happening in front of goal until a mis-hit cross from my good self to the far post from 35 yards somehow lobbed the keeper at the near post to draw us level (how's that for honesty!).
Day 2
Inter Blades... 0 QPR... 1
Our unfortunate Day One results meant that we faced an early start in the Wolrdnet Plate knockout competition, worse still it was against QPR who have been one of the top ten sides in the IFA for a while now. We nearly had a walkover in this game as QPR turned up late and the game kicked off nearly 20 minutes late. We knew this would be a tough game against one of the better sides in the IFA, but we were excellent in the first half, lots of intricate passing movements and sensible useage of space and the ball meant we never looked in danger. Unfortunately their keeper decided he'd make two of the best saves I've ever seen at any level of football from point blank range to deny us what would have been a comfortable 2-0 half time lead. The second half saw us make another uncharacteristic mistake at the back and a QPR striker hit a great shot which Ash Hurst tipped onto the post, but unfortunately the ball fell back to another QPR player who stroked it home. QPR defended well in the second half but a number or horrendous offside decisions by the linesman halted our progress, I was sorely tempted to nip across and see if he had a Piggy shirt under his black top. We pushed men forward in search of the equaliser and nearly got caught out again, but failed to take the remaining half chances that came our way, so for the first time in our three Worldnet ventures we faced an early exit on day two.
Friendly
Inter Blades... 5 Burnley... 2
Aaron Trinder 2
Liam Wasden
Rich Eldridge
Chris Beckett
We had a slightly extended friendly against the Burnley lads to finish off our Worldnet campaign and after an even start we ended the first half 2-1 down. In the second half we went goal crazy (quite ironic considering that the opposite had been our problem in the main competition) and ran in four goals including an absolute belter from 25+ yards from Liam Wasden which absolutely flew in with an incredible dip at the end.
Looking forward to Worldnet 2010 already, we might even look at entering two sides next season if we can generate enough interest/cash.
Just for the record, Bury Vets won the Worldnet Veterans Cup, Welling won the Worldnet Plate and WBA 'B' won the Worldnet Cup.
cheers,
Danny B.
