Good evening all,
A massive thanks to all the lads involved on Saturday. I was a bit worried about the state of the pitch as it had rained solid through the night and only stopped moments before kick off, but although it wasn't exactly conducive to free flowing football it held up pretty well all things considered. Unfortunately, as per usual there was a strong wind down the hill... which is usually the case at SUCC regardless of whether there's wind anywhere else for some reason.
We started off reasonably well and took an uncharacteristic early lead after Christian Phillips danced his way through the defence before finishing. Andy Wood got the second mid way through the half with a similar goal, then scored the third with a fantastic lob from 25 yards after being put clean through. The moment of the half/match/season/decade though went to defender Rob Brown. Now Rob hasn't scored in two years (in either Saturday or Sunday football), and there's been a long running joke about it dating back to WorldNet 2010, we even let him take a penalty earlier in the season to end his baron spell... but he missed! Anyway, he picked the ball up about 35-40 yards out, got it under control, then just hit across the ball perfectly and it swerved and dipped into the top corner(ish) of the net, cue wild celebrations from Rob which I had to explain to the Grimsby lads so they didn't think he was a total fruit cake!
The second half we were down the hill with the wind behind us, but although it should be an advantage we never seem to benefit from it! For the first 25-30 minutes of the half it was a bit of a stalemate, we had a fair bit of possession but we didn't really create that much and their goalkeeper made a few decent stops. We grabbed our fifth though through a great piece of control and incisive finish from young Alex Cook who was helping out up front, then Andy Wood completed his hat-trick with a cracking drive from just inside the corner of the box, then in the final few minutes Lee North scored with a cross/shot/lob from the left.
To be fair this wasn't vintage Inter Blades, but we were pretty clinical up front when it counted. But, 7-0 is a good result and I believe that should lift us to about 6th in the league.
