Incredible performance

Watched the first half on my phone driving on inside lane on way home from work.

Watched the second half on my laptop at home.

There is no doubt that this was one of the most heroic defensive performances of my 60+ years of watching my beloved Blades.Just unbelievable.

However I do wonder if we would have won the game against a very good team that moved the ball and kept us moving around had we not gone down to 10 men. I think they would have found gaps in an 11 v 11 game whereas we had to keep a specific shape to win that game with no Madine.

Either way, one of the best performances from the team in many years,

Plus I got a whack around the head when I went ballistic at the second goal, waking up my wife next to me.

You’re right. It was an immense performance last night. One that left me drained afterwards. It showed that the whole set up is together in this; moral, team spirit, effort & application.

As good a performance as I can remember a blades team putting in, a total antithesis of what we’ve had served up pre-Wilder and ranks up there with any game of either Bassett and/or Warnock. It’s games like that that get you promoted, not only for the result, but for the way it teaches the team how much they can give and how much of the reserves they can dig into and how you can trust your team mates. All the great teams are battle hardened like that. No player cheated a team mate last night, not one. Just honest 100% effort and bloody mindedness.

I would hazard a guess that there aren’t many teams that could play over an hour’s worth of football and not only not concede, but score again. Let’s be honest at 11 v 11, they looked the better side, they were moving the ball about well and with pace and we were fortunate to be leading.

One swallow doesn’t make a summer, and we’ve got 9 cup finals left, but last night.....wow. A match worthy of a place in the pantheon.

What really struck me was the organisation and communication. You could see players instructing each other to track men, cover gaps, when to press, when to drop off, and they didn't drop their concentration for a split second. It was a genuine team effort with every player helping each other.

Doesn't sound like your best idea even though I admire the dedication.

In a weird way I think we've learned more about the side's ability from that than if we'd had 11 men and rolled them over 3 or 4-0. Over this season we haven't had many situations where we've had to get ourselves out of a horrible situation and we haven't had to survive that kind of consistent pressure on the defence. The big question early on in the season was always whether we'd concede too many.

Last night put a lot of that to bed. Unbelievable defensive performance. Blocks and challenges flying in, one hard enough to burst the bloody ball. Cranie coming on again and showing how good our bench is. And even up against it for most of the game we still found a way to score a goal from nothing.
