In praise of Mccabe

So, following on from yesterday’s look at perhaps the most critical period of our recent history when we reached the Prem in 2006.

We established that the Blades had the smallest wage increase by percent of the promoted teams with United increasing spending by 48%, Watford by 78% and reading by 108%.

United’s wage bill was listed as £22.4 million, second lowest in the league:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7424134.stm

Reading’s increase may look very large, but we have to remember that a new three year TV deal came into force the season we went up, bringing the Blades, Reading and Watford around £20 million of income from TV alone.

Chelsea had the highest wage bill of £132.8 million.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7423254.stm

McCabe felt the current squad was good enough to stay up and was actually looking to reduce the wage bill, despite it being the second lowest in the league. Warnock was tasked with ‘wheeling and dealing’ to get the necessary players in/out, with Nugent appearing to be his no.1 target to play up top with Hulse.

Warnock did have money to spend in January, ‘probably’ around £7 million (under the proviso of reducing the wage bill and to include all fee's, cost's and wages) McCabe confirmed: "If we're adding the £5million from the loan note allocation, plus the budget left over from the beginning of the season, he probably has something like £7million.

This £7 million comprised £2 million remaining from the summer transfer kitty and £5 million to be raised through new funding by way of an issue of loan notes to generate £10 million pounds for the club.

“The issue of the Convertible Loan Notes is conditional on the passing of the
resolutions, which are to be proposed at an EGM and it is proposed to issue the
Convertible Loan Notes to the Scarborough Investors, a group of investors
comprising Scarborough Property Company plc, SDG Caledonia Limited and
SDG Property Holdings Limited, all of which are companies directly or indirectly controlled by Kevin McCabe, his immediate family and/or related trusts, inapproximately equal amounts.”

“the Company shall pay interest on the principal amount of the Convertible
Loan Notes, together with any accrued but unpaid interest, at 3 per cent. per
annum above the base lending rate of the Bank of Scotland from time to time
(calculated on a day to day basis)”

In July 2006, funding of £10million was secured from the Bank of Scotland for investment in the first team squad. At that time, the Bank of Scotland confirmed that no further debt would
be provided to the Group for the funding of football activities. Since the start
of the 2006/2007 season in August 2006, results on the pitch have left the Club
in 16th position in the Premiership, three points outside of a relegation
position, and the Directors are of the opinion that further investment in the
first team squad is required in the transfer window in January 2007 to improve
the chances of retaining Premiership status. In the absence of any further
funding from the Bank of Scotland, the Scarborough Investors have agreed to
provide funding of £10 million before expenses by conditionally agreeing to
subscribe for the Convertible Loan Notes. It is proposed that up to £5 million
of the proceeds received from the Fundraising will be invested in new players
for the first team squad by way of transfer fees and additional wages.

I’m guessing these are the much debated ‘10% interst rate loans’ often brought up in discussion's on McCabe , the RBS base rate was around 6-7% at this time…not entirely sure here…?

The other £5 million raised through the loan notes to the club was put towards, ‘diversification’ and ‘to invest further in our off-field revenue streams.’ in order eventually, fund the first team and running cost's.
Two new joint ventures were to be used of this, United Scarborough Developments Group Limited and Sheffield United Realty BV.

“The first of these will focus on property development opportunities in the UK. The second continues our property activities in China where we will aim to capitalise on our strong network of contacts in a region where we already own a football club and where we believe there are considerable opportunities.”

http://www.investegate.co.uk/sheffield-united-plc--sut-/rns/fundraising/200612060700583250N/

Again, not entirely sure what exactly we invested in but we did buy a ( couple?) of upmarket health clubs dahn scarf around this time, I believe?...and who knows what the fuck we bought in China re: Chengdu Blades.

It’s worth quoting the Swissramble blog here:

As stated earlier, the diversification into non-football activities has not been a financial success. Since 2006, this decision has adversely impacted the financials, increasing the magnitude of Sheffield United’s losses, especially in 2010, when £13.1 million of the total £18.8 million loss came from these divisions, leaving the football club (UK) loss at “only” £5.7 million. On the other hand, the impact was considerably smaller in 2011 at only £0.6 million with football contributing almost all of the £13.6 million total loss.

This was partly due to the directors deciding to sell or dispose of these loss-making businesses. In the last couple of years, they have sold the Copthorne hotel and the Blades Enterprise Centre, though have retained options to repurchase as and when finances allow, and also disposed of their interest in Chengdu Blades. Following the downturn in commercial property, they sold their 50% interest in Blades Realty Limited, while they also sold the Thames Club and entered into an outsourcing arrangement with Compass for their conferences and events business.

It's interesting to look back on the what if's and maybe's...it appears that McCabe's approach was far too cautious when his chance came, perhaps he didn't trust Warnock with more cash, who, despite his scattergun approach, achieved promotion the previous year when McCabe raised the club's funding levels to those of our rival's after years of scrimping and saving, plodding along in the Championship.

If we'd have invested to the same scale as Reading instead of buying real estate that ended up adversely effecting the club's finances for years to come, if we'd got Nugent in to play up top with Hulse etc....if 'Warnock wasn't out of his depth' ;) , "if the economy hadn't tanked" etc etc...

Hopefully things have now changed and ambitions are more modest, but still, I'll hold off with my praise for McCabe until (hopefully) we're 2 or 3 years down the line with Wilder and moving forwards instead of stagnating in reduced circumstances each year in L1...but who knows, maybe he will have finally sold the club/secured more investment by that time or the mysterious Princey will have increased his stake and we see this 'next level of investment'?

Last words go to the chief executive at the time, Jason Rockett:

“the Sheffield United business plan is not reliant on Premier League football.”

*Tune in soon for the next instalment of "How not to run a Football Club-The Bryan Robson years."

I've said it many times but if people want to keep singing his praises then then need reminding that he had presided over the worst period in Blades history. Therefore I see him as the worst chairman in our history.
I really do not have a clue about what he has put in/ taken out over the years and I believe no one but K Mc himself does. It is far too complicated for any fan unless you have some access to the family.
Do fans really believe that the club would have gone bust without him? I'm sure some do. My own view is that when has a club of our size ceased to exist?
We may not have had quite such a good ground but the football wouldn't/ couldn't have been any worse.
It seems we are now on the way back but few of us will not believe it until it happens.
If he takes us to the Premier and maintains us there then he may actually get some credit at last but the hurt and heartache he has caused over the Last 9 years us going to take some forgiving for a great many Blades.
COYRAWW.....AAAHHHHRR.

Not personally seen anyone say the club would have "ceased to exist".

Entered administration yes, many people, but seeing as McCabe/Scarborough was basically the only relevant creditor, it was always a non starter anyway. So on that point he hasn't actually saved us. What he has done is pump his own money in to try and turn it around as the accounts and notes clearly show and which the registered auditor will have verified.

Without going back into ancient history, since the Prince came on board the amounts invested by the owners are easily provable if you know where and how to look. One person thinking it's complicated doesn't mean others aren't capable of understanding.
Despite this some still insist there's been little or no investment recently.

As said. I'm not bothered about that. Just the shit job he has done relating to football matters. He remains the worst chairman in our history. He has a lot of seasons before him to compensate (or whatever word folk want to use if they feel like me) for the wrong decisions he has made.

That's fair enough but you have mentioned it. And that's the bit I commented on, not the above, which is how you personally feel.

The figures are all there though.

Basically Sean Thornton is asking you to be grateful for McCabe servicing the debts and clusterfuck he has created himself through years of clueless, inept 'management' of the football club....and fair play to the bloke, he's written off loads of debts owed to the companies that created the debts ( debts that he was very unlikely to get back, certainly not by walking away then)

In return for wiping these debts, and to protect the club from nasty people who might want to invest in the club, those companies have received several physical tangible assets...

In addition to this he's managed to get Princey on board to half his costs going forward and give us some 'next level' investment when we are promoted to Champ!

Rejoice!

Personal abuse is against forum rules, infraction given

Don't see how being forgetful stops you reading your own posts but the bit about how much he may have put in over the years. I thought that meant money. Not an unreasonable assumption.

As a further hint, the bit where you reckoned if it was too complicated for you you doubted anyone else save Kev could understand it. A laugh out loud moment to be honest. Now how do you spell self absorbed?

..and of that I'm very happy, as witnessed on the appropriate threads.
Trouble is Esablade, you have an agenda and mould whatever facts are at hand to fit.
Football, like business, is unpredictable, and every club in football has at some time made footballing and investment mistakes!

Right then so with your personal abuse that I'm an idiot and the others amongst us, prove your point and put a detailed balance sheet for the last 9 years. That will prove you right and the rest like me idiots will it?
Talk about obsessed. I have not gone in to any detail about financial dealing s yet you try to suggest I have by quoting my non committal statement on it.
So you love McCabe and all he has done.
You cannot hide from the truth he is the worst chairman ever to do with the football side of things. Sorry that hurts you but you cannot deflect that fact.
I really do not give a toss about the money side.I GO TO WATCH THE TEAM I LOVE PLAY FOOTBALL AND HE HAS CREATED MASSIVE DISAPPOINTMENT S ON THAT FRONT IN THE LAST 9 YEARS.

Really, it's no trouble, presenting a few facts to counter some of the spin.

Did a little bit of wee come out?

Did I call you an idiot or point out that you said it was too complicated for you and therefore you reckoned it would be too complicated for anyone else. That says to me that you believe it's others that may be less intelligent than you.

Looks like you're one of the "make it up gang " so probably not worth bothering with anymore.

The balance sheets are all avaiable at Companies House but if only Kev understands them you may struggle.....

Personally I actually like it when all you guys try to put your "facts" on the table, its what a democracy is all about plus trying to learn from maybe what we did right and wrong as a club. My perception of a few things has changed as a resut of reading all these threads.

What seems clear is we missed a golden, golden opportunity in Jan 2007 and nearly but didn't quite get away with it. Has our owner at the time saved us a few times since, bailed us out and saved us going into oblivion or into the hands of an asset stripper - probably yes. Thanks. *

Did our owner show enough determination and backing at the time to make sure we just avoided relegation ? History knows the answer, other clubs around us took calculated gambles to stay up, we were too timid, and have been since and even now in my view. Certain people at our club got the whole risk reward calculation wrong and hoped they could tough it out by doing very little.

When I think about what might have happened the next season if we'd got a result against Wigan I reached the conclusion if the manager and owner had stayed and we had the same low level of investment and a manager who just bought mediocrity we would probably have gone down the next season anyway. Hence it was kind of inevitable without major change.

Ultimately to stay in the premership (or get promoted) needs a good manager and an owner who's prepared to invest boldly with some bottle when the risk reward ratio is in your favour. We've rarely had this combination. All comes down to bottle. Some say it was all bad luck but not me, you influence your own destiny to a large extent by doing the right things at the right times, luck plays a much smaller part.

Enough about darker times, lets hope I see a few goals for us tomorrow.

* I remember several years ago when on TV a previous ex manager, lets call him Rowbsan, tried to allegedly broker a sale of us to an asian consortium (was it a 3 million or so) and who knows what they might have done or asset stripped us. Someone who saved us from this fate probably deserves a bit of respect.

Well written and considered post South Bucks. That's about as close to how I think our trajectory has taken us over the last decade or so. Dedication to the club's well-being allied to caution and an absence of adventure has seen us stagnate.....until now that is. A different dynamic and different personnel are enabling us to approach the business of developing and being successful in ways I thought I might not see, but here we are, on what I hope will be a fantastic journey with Chris Wilder at our helm.

Yes you have called me an idiot.
I accept you fantasise about Kev but do not try and suggest we all have them.
You refuse to back up your arguments when you say you have proof.
Says everything really about your Kev love.
You go and hug his hotel and other bricks. I'll go to watch a game of football in the hope that at last he has got something right.
As said previous you refuse to back up your arguments with proof.
Who are "the make it up gang"? That is exactly what you are doing. Twisting things to try and make up that someone has said something else.
Please tell me, have you enjoyed the Last 9 years of football?
Plain English; Has McCabe done a good job with the football side of things, yes or No?

Quite handy 'not having a clue ' if that means you don't have to give him any credit whatsoever for keeping us afloat.

I agree he has made some poor decisions, especially not consolidating in the Premier and then appointing. Mogadon Man. You are correct to say he has presided over our worst period in history but bad luck and managerial incompetence have been major contributors too. Finally it looks like the tide is turning. .......

Pompey, Boo, Esablade will attack KM at any opportunity and Sean, BTL, myself and others will generally defend him. No - one is going to change their views so why don't we give it a rest and just enjoy being top of the league?

I agree with your last sentence but going back to your first. No it is not handy. it is a fact and whilst Sean claims he knows all the hard financial figures he refuses to quote them. Also it is not just about the figures relating to our club that make it complicated, it could be many figures relating too his many business interests. who knows for example what guests he has had at United and the Hotel and what other sweeteners he has employed to make good on deals within his other business interests (I am in no way implying he has done anything underhand it is just the way of business). Could our guys in the commercial dept get a better deal for advertising instead of the McCabe business advertising? How all these things are entwined would take a huge investigation to find out.
If you are a paying fan you owe nothing to the club and the price of tickets season tickets are what you pay to watch. There are many fans who will see the prices as too high even now when we the lucky ones can afford them. I remember a time when I could not go because it was a sacrifice I had to make for other more important things in my life like putting food on the table for my family. If you are one of those fans struggling now you will understand and do not feel guilty. If you went in the past and it it still very important to you, then you have given of yourself as much as you can and in relative terms to Kev probably more.
You and Sean and BTL may see him as a saviour if you want. Further I do not see it as an ATTACK on McCabe just his woeful decisions. He is probably a very nice bloke and he believed he was doing right but my football club would've survived without him and would not have played any worse football, (speculation).
Enjoy the rest of the season:).

But you yourself 'present' facts and then apply your own spin to suit your agenda!

Facts are facts...you can dispute them or accentuate the positive or negative.

As others have posted, when we're doing well people generally accentuate the positive, when we're doing badly, the opposite.

We get some posters whose job appears to be to regularly spin the same script and jump on any dissent in an abusive derogatory manner, in an attempt to shut it down. Accusing people of lying, 'not knowing the facts', not being Blades, trolling etc etc...without really addressing the dissent.

I've posted a fair bit accenuating the positives re: McCabe, his undoubted backing and sorting out his own mistakes, the development of the ground/pitch, the academy, the pricing.

However, my overall view is he's failed the club badly, and I disagree with a lot of his methods. The diversification, the swapping out of assets in exchange for bad debts which his companies raised in the first place, terrible, terrible football decisions year after year...The list goes on...

However, I really hope that he's ( and now Princey also) able to turn things round and leave us on a decent footing, as he's wanted out for a long time but has dug himself into a bit of a hole re: planning an escape route..bit like a maaraige that's gone stale, you love 'em, but at times, can't stand to be in the same room ( think George and Mildred)

We're basically a strong championship club ( with all the benefits that brings) floundering in L1 for too long.

I sincerely hope Wilder gets us up this season as it wouldn't be beyond the bloke to sack him in a fit of pique.

I haven't refused to post or prove anything.as I said, the Make It Up Gang. Same with your "idiot" comment. If you're so big on proof, let's have it.

I said all the accounts and regulatory filings are available free at Companies House. I'd have thought that a Government department having documents filed uunder the Companies Acts and signed off by registered auditors or directors etc of the club would be more acceptable than me just posting the figures on here. Apparently not.

Fantasise about Kev and hug his bricks? Really? That's very childish.

You actually aren't the only one who watches the team. I've watched since long before McCabe took over and we've been shit before believe me. The last few seasons have been dire. Utterly dire and before that not much better, seemingly "better" because of a couple of play off finals etc. I have no problem saying that especially as it's true. But the only defence I make of him however you and others try to spin it is that he HAS lost millions - not that sympathetic really as its all down to his decisions - something that some can't bring themselves to accept. I can accept its not been good enough but plenty can't accept his financial input into the club. And oddly enough, doing so Wouldnt dilute anyones view that the last nine years, that you quote, haven't been shocking. One doesn't provide any "set off" against the other.

Let's all hope we've finally turned the corner.,

So my question would be, why did you start having a go at me when I've never really questioned his financial commitment. I don't see him as crucial to the clubs survival though like some suggest. He may have lost millions? but if he lost 9 million and I lost 9 hundred I know who would feel it more. He's a lucky man;) or a talented one who knows how to do extremely well in life. I or you do not need to thank him or be appreciative of his efforts for something he freely undertook. Not on behalf of the fans but because he loves United and wanted to make them a success. I have no doubt that if he had sustained us in the premiership I would possibly be singing his praises. Reality bites and we are down here and hoping and looking like finally having success.
We have had one promotion in the best part of 30 years. How many of those years has Kev been in charge? Lets hope it is soon to be two?
Enjoy the rest of the season.

Fair enough BR. Let's hope we're celebrating at the end of the season. We've all waited long enough.

4 years ago Kevin McCabe proclaimed "Gamechanging Investment" following his sale of half the club to Prince Abdullah. I wonder if we will now finally see any evidence of this? For example a truly impressive signing. We live in hope.

I can't stand people who tell us that his family reside in a lovely village between Bamford and Castleton,I bet you have a we vote Tory poster in your garden

I agree its time for the Prince and KM to step up to the plate and back Wilder and make a couple of signings to make the others of a similar ilk to us sit up and take notice.
I'm a big believer of build from the back, so a central defender is a good shout for big investment. Maybe decent money on a winger/ flank player?
